This is the restoration of a dented and really dirty Gunstock from an old German air rifle.
I wasn't able to remove all the dents without removing too much material so I left them as they were.
Let me know what do u think about this restoration in the comments below. Thank you!

The aceton to clean the wrist of the stock was a much needed piece of information on my part. Thank you.

A German air rifle we grew up in the USA with an air gun very famous with male youth a Crosman pump action air rifle and thy still make and sell them. We use a lot of acetone for cleaning metal surfaces wood we have so much to learn here about wood if we are going to ever prevail in working with it compared to our metal skills. This makes you and your channel a joy to watch we are always learning. Really nice shoulder grooves in the butt shock. Lance & Patrick.

Well done, I just did one the other day, I found that after you have a good finish, you can use the soft fine buff with a fine polishing compound which really puts a nice finish to your work.

I watched a table restoration video recently where the guy used steam to pull dents out so he didn't have to sand down too much. He wet the dent, and used a wet towel over it be touched that with a hot soldering iron or wood burning tool. Seemed to work well.

That was a classy touch recheckering the butt ! In the future if you get badly oil soaked greasy wood don't hesitate to give a hot boil it cuts the dent time to 0 and removes the soaked in crap!

I did this to a couple of my old Mosin Nagants, they looked really nice after I was done, but a few years later, I deeply regretted doing it, because the old military rifles had lost all of its character.

I have used unscented cat litter to remove oil from grout this work without solvents took a few days I wonder if it would work on a gun stock like that. You might still have to use a little solvent.

Cant you start from 400 grit sandpaper and work your way up the 1200 grit one ? Is the 100-400 ones worth it ? It takes away a lot of wood which would theoretically impact the recoil of the gun no?

Beautiful. If the steam iron does not work what would you do then?
@macoppy6571
@macoppy6571 3 жыл бұрын
Works best when using a saturated cloth when steaming. A dry cloth absorbs too much from the iron. Cuts and gouges in wood fiber cannot be raised. Those can be worked around, ignored, or filled.

How does the iron and steam make the dents in the wood raise?
@garrettwight1027
@garrettwight1027 5 жыл бұрын
Because wood swells as it absorbs water, which allows you to sand it almost completely smooth, which makes the dent non existent

Andre Grodahn there is only two places that make them that aren’t cheap overseas copies. They get sold under a lot of different names and you will never find to much of a difference in the pricing between them sadly. They are a lot. Getting enough to checker wood and checker metal ran be several hundred dollars. If it’s worth it to you, they will last a life time. If not a hobby to go into just to mess around with because old specialist tools like these are of a dying breed and thus to acquire them these days cost a premium. My best advice is to check out gun store closing sales, EBay, and also check clearance sections on websites that sell stuff like this. That would really be the only way to get any real savings.
