Smoke MyPole Sounds more like Troy. Troy's voice is kinda gruff, while Brent has a bit more of that southern drawl to it. Both are great either way

Watched them open for Clutch in 2003 at The Bottleneck in Lawrence Ks and play this live. Amazing show. This is by far one of Phil Lynott's best songs. A battle cry.
@awookieandagerman2 жыл бұрын
I love how they play it a little loose and with a really fierce energy. Classic material deserves to be fun to play and listen to, not robotically copied and all neatly quantized. If you're not going to overhaul a song to "make it your own," then this is the other best way to do a cover: accurate, but with joy and reckless abandon.

@davecoulson34509 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with the chords. Some of the lead playing is a little different from Lizzy's but, as with all cover versions, that's simply the way they're doing it! I'm a long-time Thin Lizzy fan who saw them live in '81 and '82 and I've got to say, as with most things Mastodon have done, this is quality. Those of you who question the musicianship have clearly no idea what you're talking about.

@sapiopneumoni6 жыл бұрын
Where the fuck is the quality in this ? It's like hearing the original song with a worse singer... They didn't make their own version by adapting the song to their own style, they just rerecorded a classic that it's not theirs. This isn't the point of recording covers Imo.
@deathtopardee5 жыл бұрын
@@sapiopneumoni they liked the song so they did a cover with out raping the integrity of the song. I love thin Lizzy and Mastodon. Quick to shame but can you do a cover of this? No? That's what I thought.
@kamenanew98674 жыл бұрын
@@sapiopneumoni I feel like with a cover you can either do a near identical version while still making it clearly ur style adapted into the original, such as this one. Or you can go very different and make an almost unrecognizable sounding cover, and that can still be good too, for instance check out smells like teen spirit by bruthal 6, vastly different from the original yet still very good. Mastodon didnt change up stairway to heaven much either but I still love what they did with it

its funny that everytime I end up listening to 2 random bands that i always find them doing covers of each others songs, i just listened to mastodon oblivion and type in "Thin lizzy emerald cover" and the first thing that comes up is mastodons cover which I didnt even know existed wtf .

I definitely think that older songs are better than newer songs in general, but there are a few modern songs that stand out to me. The White Sea, Freya, Ebethron, The Warp Riders, Tres Brujas, Lawless Lands, and Empty Temples from The Sword, and March of the Fire Ants, Where Strides the Behemoth, Workhorse, Trainwreck, Trampled Under Hoof, Blood and Thunder, Seabeast, Stargasm, Tread Lightly, Aunt Lisa, Ember City, Diamond in the Witch House, and Sultan's Curse from Mastodon. That's good shit. But maybe the best old school shit that I have heard is Emerald from Thin Lizzy, The Trooper from Iron Maiden, and Supernaut from Black Sabbath. Some really good shit. I feel good about myself now. I feel powerful! Is this normal?

Someone below complained about the wrong notes ? ! Jesus dude, Lizzy is one of my 3 favorite bands and these guys kicked ass, so does Frehley and Slash. I try to play a bit and you have to put your own touch to a song. I think the original artists would appreciate the new twist. I know 2 of my other favorite bands never ever played a song the same way twice Zeppelin and Allman Bros. I think it is a lack of imagination to try to play it exactly like the original.
