I think he’s just always been the quiet one. From what I recall, he was the one wishing for a reunion the most when they were broken up.

I'm so late to this but it is true, he has always been the quiet one. Especially in most the interviews that they have done. Matt and James had been friends before the band had formed with Charlie being a later addition and the two stuck with one another even after Charlie had left so I think James is just the quieter one to be completely fair with you.
