Trippier showed excellent leadership after the foul that led to that free kick and goal, pushing Gordon away from getting involved in a scuffle that could have got him a booking or worse. Then making it 3-0 with another pinpoint delivery.

Blade here, I think the idea was to try and play but we should have been way more respectful. Your guys showed us too much respect at first and we in thinking we could mix it with the big boys ….instead of sticking to the defensive knitting, left gaps and your team gratefully accepted almost all of the chances. Many teams would have wasted some but I was impressed by the clinical ease with which you took almost all of the chances. We compounded our woes by stupidly not shutting up shop after half time, instead thinking we could get something back, big mistake! Maybe it was a very good lesson. Hopefully we will learn from this. We often lose but don’t normally get thrashed. I’m old and this was the worst loss ever. We gave your goal difference a massive boost.

I specifically remember thinking we were in for a long season before the first goal, we kept giving the ball away and Sheffield Utd even missed a couple great chances before the first goal if I’m not mistaken. But after the first and arguably second, they had some kind of renewed confidence. That happens to us A LOT. Vs Villa, vs Everton, vs Southampton, West Ham, Brighton, Brentford, Tottenham… there are so many examples. They just seem to lose all their doubts and start playing like prime Barcelona. Every set piece became threatening, every attack looked like it would end up as a goal, and the fact that there were 8 different goal scorers showed just how well the confidence was distributed The first thing I thought of was Bournemouth. They lost 9-0 (also with 11 men on the field the entire game) to Liverpool. In the return fixture though? They won 1-0 vs Liverpool. Southampton also finished 11th the season they lost 9-0 to Leicester (or Man Utd, I’ve forgotten). You’d be surprised how things change quickly. All the best
