...Consider the source, they were born in 1917 (Gene), and 1924 (Brett) respectively. Gene looked every day of 58, and Brett was 51 looking 61 due to heavy smoking (those glasses didn't help her cause either). Richard Dawson had heard of them, but was somewhat younger (1932), British, & decidedly hipper (also a heavy smoker and looking 10 years older). While Smokey Robinson & The Miracles indeed crossed over between genres; (R&B-Black to Pop-White) , it's safe to say that Gene and Brett were more of the Ella Fitzgerald/Shirley Bassey/Johnny Mathis school of crossover appeal.

Motown and R & B wasn't quite as much of a "crossover" to older audiences as it is now, but I agree that it is odd that so many of them never had heard of him. Personally, I would have said Jackie, Mrs., and Sugar Ray before Smokey. This was actually a tough one for the contestant, to be honest.

Jerry Butler You know you're right? I looked up his obituary again and this time I noticed his age. The John Levinson that died was 59. I didn't see that the first time. This John Levinson is obviously not 59. But here's the kicker. If you saw the episode before this one when they introduced John Levinson he mentioned he was a professional golfer. And John Levinson's obit mentioned he is survived by a son John. So I'm wondering now if they could be father and son. 🤔🤔

Leslie Nielsen was only known as a dramatic actor at this point (and a very good one), not a comedic actor. I wonder if appearing on The Match Game and other game shows helped him get hired for comedies. He still did some dramatic acting after he started doing comedies: try the 1987 movie "Nuts" to see him in very good dramatic role.
