RIP Diego Maradona, from 🏴 to 🇦🇷 (and Naples). Was he a perfect human? No. Will people be watching videos like these in wonder and awe thousands of years from now? Yes. And he never forgot where he came from or the people he left back there either. Genuinely, a legend, an icon, a myth of our times.

For me, the greatest players must play for the full 90 minutes, not confining themselves to brilliant flashes that bring goals and long rest periods in between.They say that power corrupts, and so it does and in football there is another devil . . . money. When a player has acquired enough money he quite naturally starts to think that keeping his legs in one piece is more important than entertaining the fans, and knowing that there are opponents who will kick him if he turns it on, for too many of the modern players lived on their reputations. Stars such as Maradona, Cruyff (at this peak) and Eusebio (for most of his career), lived on their reputations. They were entitled to do that - if they could get away with it. But in my book too many stars took little breaks, or in the case of Maradona long breaks; hiding in the midfield jungle, once their team was winning. I want teams to try and entertain the fans for the whole 90 minutes and try and win 10-0 every time. That means that all 11 players on the park, have to do it for 90 minutes. The fact that Maradona, Cruyff, Eusebio and many others today did not give 100 per cent for the whole game, is due to their manager’s lack of character and a general lack of discipline.

@@gunternetzer9621 that's nonsense. What defines a 'great' player is the ability to regularly drag your team thru games the way Gerrard did against Milan in 05. Someone who leads by example

@ocn14s11 ай бұрын
@@bradyo2 I would say messi is a force of nature - perhaps even better than Maradona - they are very similar - particularly in terms of physique, - however the one thing I would say in favour of Maradona is that in his time defenders got away with much more - in particular look at the man marking job Gentile did on Maradon in 82 - you just wouldnt get away with that nowadays
