Whatever that decal was made of, it wasn't made for clear that's for sure, which is a shame because it was a more accurate on than the one I finished up with. Thank you!

Yeah, it's impossible to know with decals and it sucks when you have to strip it and start again. And buy more decals.

I think it has to do with the layer of zinc oxide on top, the layer that makes it dull grey. not many paints stick to that properly. there are also differences between cast zinc alloy, like what our fave toys are made of; galvanized zinc, and flame-splattered zinc. the latter actually repents normal paint, and you either need a special basecoat, or have to wait until the silvery surface is a dull dark grey... aside that, the buffing is to make sure no one misses big scracthes, gaps, or any other flaws you'd later see through the paint. and it has become a kind of ritual, too. :)

I would think the same about a shiny surface Bob. It's very tempting for some reason when it starts getting shiny to keep on with it. I know in this instance when I stripped it the second time, it was a complete mongrel to get the paint off again, but that might have been from the two lots of clear it had. I do try and degrease the castings, I don't always do it and I don't often film myself doing it. I didn't do it to this one. I used to get really stressed about getting a super close paint match, but sometimes I let close enough get through however in saying that I'm doing a K5 Racing Transporter at the moment and the green I used was way too dark and it's getting stripped again, so sometimes I try 😊 Thank you for your thoughtful feedback.

Also (especially after caustic soda stripping) you really need to get that layer of residue off before anything else.

Thank you. I should have gone a bit further with matching the paint but I like it in the end. I incorrectly assumed the roller door was just a bit stiff and needed a bit of flexing to 'warm' it up. Completely rigid resin, so it would never have fit without cutting it down anyway. And the more I look at the second lot of decals, the worse they get. The 'P' is terrible.

@@PBsRetroRestorations aw. well, what can you do... browsing my pile I found the little Matchbox Daimler Double Decker Bus in ivory paint and livery, and the paint is chipped but the decals are still perfect. I might have to try and match the paint Marty style, and cover the decals for a refresh. :P there is also an old Dinky Commer wrecker with perfect decals while the rest is chipped dead. ...what if the go and try to keep the original livery wherever practical and feasible instead of erasing it all and repainting it with decals that won't fit?
