I spent nearly 30 years in "IT", the last 10 or so in Senior Management roles. Two years ago I bought a farm, got a load of animals and started the Handyman Business. I haven't looked back since. The money was great, the stress through the roof; I still make a living and the quality of life is totally off the scale. Be safe everyone. Scott, if you're ever in the Wairarapa area call in for a brew.

Is that Repair Care Dry Flex that Todd is using on the door sill? That stuff is awesome. Doesn't sag, sets hard, can be chiselled and sanded. It does stink though and the 1 hour compound gives off steam as it sets as it's an exothermic reaction.

ITM has got a product that's essentially a bottle of primer with a brush head(and a separate cap). It works great and you no longer have to worry about separate brushes and a tin of paint. The product is by NIAGARA called Envira Fast Dry End Seal i believe its called.

yeah it's awesome, but it's only 450ml bottle. good if you're doing a few weather boards. A brush and primer goes further, easier to get a hold of, and costs a whole lot less.

Squat toilets. Was surprised to see how common they are in Kiev. Have them in the 1930s central railway station [understandable], but also in the museum under the famous Motherland Monument, which only opened in 1981. Nothing worse for a British bloke than finding a squat toilet, nor the poor bastard who had to clean up after me, I could never get the knack of using those things.

Most of timbers are treated for outdoor construction buodlings. Are these save to use as indoor furniture. Where do I go to buy untreated timber? I see there are precut pieces on the shelf like $20+ each, so expensive. Thanks.

There is a cavity behind the cladding in new builds in NZ, but wasn't when this house was originally built. If Scott put a cavity behind the new weatherboards the finished cladding would stick out further than the existing cladding and the house would look very weird. I guess there is an exemption to having a cavity in cases like this one.

Depends where you are. Here in Auckland its electric heat pump / aircon combo for renovated homes, some are gas heating with portable LPG bottle, some mains gas and some dirty old bar or fan heater and a regular fan for cooling in summer. Auckland and north of isn't even cold. It might see 9C degree in winter. I walk around in shorts and sandals all year, if it's cold I wear a hoodie. These older homes are probably warmer than average as they're all in wealthier inner city areas and have had a good 25 odd years of renovations as the prices of these homes/suburbs have crept up.

The builder before you and now you are making a common mistake. The facings or architraves need to be set int so that the weather boards butt up against the side of the arch’s. The way you have it is a water trap that will see those sills rotted out in no time. I realise that if you do this the ends of the weather boards are floating on a void. However if you put a stud inside you can then nail them down it will look so much better and seal out the weather. In fact at the top of the window with the arch’s now set in. A flashing is almost not required. Old double hung windows were fitted this way but it’s been long forgotten.

In America people would have to die before inspectors would be allowed to hold up construction progress over so many aspects of construction/renovation. Too many stages are being interrupted along your projects duration. New Zealand is beautiful, indeed, but too much of a nanny state as far as your governments ability to dictate your actions and basic freedoms (no semi-auto nail guns, for example). That said, our construction standards in America are not lacking (much) as a result. Cheers!
