Matching my FS7 with My ARRI - The LUT (Phantom LUTs)

Now available for ARRI and BMPCC4K/6K cameras as well as SONY.
*In the side by sides, I used the Log-C to Alexa 709 LUT with a tiny bit of contrast added to account for difference in DR and to give the LUT a subtle look to it but didn't touch the colour.
These will work with Sony Alpha cameras like A7 series, and any other 8 bit camera that shoots S-Log. The footage here was all Fs5 and Fs7.

This LUT is so good! It's the magic sauce I've been looking for the FS7, I only wish I'd had it for the last five years. It's brought a new lease of life and might eek out a bit more life from the old girl yet. Thanks Joel, this really is incredible work and very much appreciated!

Great LUTS! it gives the FS5 a new life imo. They resolve great contrast and places colors in the right pockets! New go to on set.

I first came across Joels Cine4 LUTs and it totally changed the fs5 for me. Joel encouraged me to shoot with slog which I wasn't comfortable with and the results were amazing. The FS5 felt like a different camera and I have been shooting slog ever since. I know Joel works hard on tweaking the new Arri luts and every release has been getting even better. I use these LUTs on every job now and I truly wouldn't love my FS5 as much without them. The new G10 version is magic.

Recently downloaded, and had the chance to play with G10 on a small paid project in addition to some home stuff. I enjoyed G9... but the things G10 can accomplish, especially in mixed lighting, is the work of eldritch sorcery and Rumplestiltskin. It's nothing I would have been able to accomplish grading on my own without expending far, FAR over the modest cost of this pack. Not only does it feel like an upgrade for the FS5, but it's even improving my already-solid A7RIV footage. My biggest complaint is that I'm resisting the urge to go back and re-grade projects delivered last year.

Hey Joel, bought both of your LUT packs last week for my A7iii footage and I’m seriously blown away! They are so, so good! I’m getting exactly the look I’ve been after since I got my camera over a year ago and the 10 styles give so many creative options. Skin tones are incredible and even at 6400 ISO in low light I’m not having any noise problems with Slog2. Thank you so much for all the time you put into creating them!

Been using the G9's for a while now, but love the G10 update man! Skintones seem even better, and the image feels a bit less harsh. Especially the Arri Neutral profile was greatly improved! Great work!

Great job, looks so good 😍 Could you maybe do a side-by-side comparison to your old Luts? In my eyes they also came very close to an ARRI so I‘m not sure how big the difference might be... thanks!

Philipp Awounou I may get around to it but I can tell you that the old LUTs were developed by me guessing - whereas these LUTs were developed alongside an actual arri. The colours are much closer to the real deal and the saturation is a lot more balanced. And skin tones - they are the biggest improvement.

Been using your luts for a while now! My setup has been a FS7 and a A73. I moved to an Amira too around 6 months ago. Didn't know you've done the same! In my workflow it's a bit difficult that your Sony to Arri luts are converting to Rec709. Are you considering making some Slog2/3 to Arri Log C luts? That would have suited my color grading workflow a lot better. Thanks for the great work you've done!

At the end there all I could think was, "Damn that looks like a movie." I'm always fiddling with the skin tones on my Sony. Do you think these would help the lower end a6300/6400? I'm not shooting movies (yet) but I really want to improve the look.

Dan Grigore do a KZfaq search for phantom LUTs HLG. There is a guy who does it - I can’t remember his name but he gets great footage mixing them actually

mjolsztyn yes I sent out the update email in January. Check your junk mail but if for some reason you didn’t receive it, there were instructions for you to get a massive discount on the updated luts. All you need to do is head over to joelfamularo.com/colour and repurchase whichever lut pack you initially did but in the ‘discount’ box enter your email address. Your email will act as your one time unique code and depending on which pack you bought the update will cost you $10-15. Enjoy!

Hi Aaron here again, I purchased your LUT pack 3 months ago, and it has been great for my Sony a7iii and my crew. I do mix it with up HLG sometimes with lowered intensity as some scenes, slog2 is not practical in bad lighting conditions. The blacks are totally crushed and become too grainy. Anyway this is the result of your beautiful work :) I thought to share this with you my little self-made film of this current pandemic outbreak. Greetings from Singapore.

Hey Joel, just bought the luts and loving them during the day. Even loving them at night when shooting in 4k. I have a A6400 so unfortunately I have to drop down to 1080p 120FPS 100M for slow motion video. When I use this setting the footage is SOO grainy and almost unusable, which stinks because I always shoot slow motion footage. Any work ideas for work arounds or things I could do?

I guess if the 120FPS stuff is grainy, it's partly to do with the codec but also I'd just feed the sensor more light in those scenarios. Wont have anything to do with the LUTs but the camera.

Lasse Ancher yeah I know what you mean but honestly... from the footage I’ve seen with them on an fx9 I wouldn’t want to change a thing. The footage I’ve seen so far really blew me away.

Hi Joel, I'm stuck with an a7riv HLG workflow--but I *really* want to use your luts. They're incredible, and I purchased them hoping to figure this out. Any suggestions on how I can incorporate them? My camera sensor seems to have a better curve with HLG vs slog2, as it's 8-bit. Let me know your thoughts!

Torin Hill yep all I can tell you is no one is shooting Hollywood films with HLG - they use LOG coz it’s the key to get the most cinematic images with the dynamic range and colour depth. Check this short film out. It was shot on an a7sii and graded with my Alexa LUTs. Shot on slog2. You can’t get that image with HLG and my LUTs won’t work anywhere near as well with HLG as with S log. vimeo.com/358437499

Hi Joel, I was wondering if I shoot Slog3 sg3cine on the FS7 which lut works best: the Slog2 sg3cine or the Slog 3 lut ? I'm asking because I'm not sure if the Slog 3 lut was made for Sgamut color space or sg3cine color space. I want to be able to match Slog3 sg3cine on my FS7 and FX3.

Hi Julia, The slog3 fs7 LUTs are made for slog3+sgamut3cine so they’re the best to use for sure. The a7s3 LUTs are best for the fx3 as they have the same sensor and colour science. Matching between all 6 cameras I currently support is decent but I want it to be better so I’m planning a complete re-build of all the LUTs in the coming months to make sure they all match my Alexa and each other even better than now. So if you get the a7s3 LUTs and find the matching wth your fs7 takes a bit of tweaking then don’t worry it will be getting better as I roll out free updates as soon as I get the time and the right weather here (need to shoot a whole new battery of side by side tests with my Alexa but need good weather to capture the best colour). Regarding the LUTs that you sell online, is it a software that you install in the Sony camera itself or in the PC/Laptop during post-production? What is the cheapest budget Sony video camera model that we can use with this LUTs? Thanks in advance.

So yep - you use them in your editing program (Premiere/Resolve/Final Cut etc) and any camera that shoots S Log will work with them. I know the a6400/6500 or miost of the alpha cameras will work with them :)
