“Matching numbers” and reading a Porsche kardex

The only way to tell if a Porsche is matching numbers, meaning it still has the engine that was original to the car when it was sold, is to check the kardex. But the kardex is in German! In this video I’ll show you how to interpret each section of the kardex and demonstrate if the numbers match for my 356 Roadster.

I do speak German and I am used to all sorts of mispronunciations, but your "signal rot" made me spew my coffee 😂 The "o" in German is usually pronounced as 'oh' and not as an 'ah' as we Americans often do. So: r-oh-t. Roht. Or roat, rhymes with boat (although it's more 'oh' than 'oa'). And "Liegesitze" isn't even that hard: 'lee-geh-seet-zeh'. I had a German girlfriend a while back who's name was Birgit. My friends used to call her all sorts of things from Bridget to Brigit to... Until I told them to pretend they were southerners telling their beer to leave in a hurry: beer, git! Perfect: LOL

interesting that some information may be on some kardex but not others. I don't think they really needed a lot of information. Great that you have the warantee book.

I was really surprised how "empty" my kardex seemed to be when it arrived, but I guess my car didn't have many options really so it was just the build #s for engine, transmission, etc. I should google some other ones (sometimes people post them on Bring A Trailer listings too) to see what a more "full" kardex looks like.

@@AtypicalDriver My 64 is about like yours, didn't list the radio delete and steel wheels. Those were probably not important however I have read that these appeared on some Kardex. What else? Nice garage.

Thanks for the garage compliment, not all mine though as I live in a condo! My roadster has a "motorola" radio, single speaker (neither work) and an ashtray but I think those must have been added afterwards.

356s never had a VIN number. They did have chassis numbers which is what you are calling the VIN number. Modern VIN numbers have 17 characters. Picky I know. Also The Kardex system was dropped by Porsche in about 1969 or 1970

Both very good points, thanks for adding that! What did they do post 1970 to replace the kardex? Maybe by then it was stored electronically?

I recently purchased a 1960 Porsche Roadster #87467. It appears our cars were manufactured just a few cars apart from each other. Mine is Signal Red with Black leatherette interior.

Thank you! Yes, thats the plan, I haven't even washed it yet. I'm thinking about getting some of the bigger dents removed with paintless dent removal, but at the same time they kind of give it character. What do you think?
