Gdansk​ (pronounced [gedansk]; Polish Gdańsk pronounced /'ɡdaɲsk/ ( listen); German Danzig pronounced /ˈdantsɪç/ ( listen); Kashubian: Gduńsk; Archaic Spanish: Gedán)2 is the sixth largest city in Poland and the largest port city in this country. Between 1975 and 1998 it was the capital of the former Gdańsk Voivodeship and, since 1998, it has been the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship. In this city is the famous shipyard where the Solidarity union was founded. In Spanish it is also traditionally known by the adaptation of its name in German, Dánzig3, it is popularly called the "capital of amber". Gdansk, together with the neighboring cities of Gdynia and Sopot, constitute a metropolitan area called in Polish Trójmiasto ("Tripoli", "Tricity" or "Triple City").
