Before painting we should acknowledge the purpose of the stage we are in. If we are working indirectly the initial paint layers work as a preparation to guide more sophisticated colors. In this instructional video, available on my website, I focus on the underpainting stage; that painting stage that goes after the drawing remaining simple enough to create a base for the next layer.

Regarding black, does anybody use umber mixed with ultramarine instead? I am experimenting with it, pros or cons for using this instead of ivory black?

Is there a reason you used such a high chroma palette (the palette itself) ? Is that bc it's the complementary to alot of the Hues and tones you use?

Sir Cesar Santos, I’m currently participating in an Art competition. I’ve just applied gesso on my canvas yesterday, I’m worried that sketching on it using a pencil might ruin it so should I instead sketch with a paint? I’ll be using an acrylic medium btw, Thanks!

If you get a spray fixative you can sketch, spray it and then it won’t mix with the paint.

That’s because schools aren’t generally focused on art anymore, they’re more leaning into Mathematics, Science, and Language so you wouldn’t really get information like this at schools.

Cesar, are you not worried about the fixatives impacting the ability of your paintings to last generations? I heard that fixatives are too new to understand the real chemical impact they may have on the painting composition, and may lead to faster painting degradation (maybe not, but there is a risk). Hence why man recommend being judicious in only using new chemicals in paintings so not to lose a full body of work through the ages like other artists.
