Yay! Finally there is a video by Shane on math majors! I have been waiting for this one, and now, I get to enjoy this one all day! Unfortunately, I might have to go get a Master's degree in Math and Physics or something along those lines because I am trying to become a post-secondary teacher or researcher, but from what it seems like that might not be the best thing to do. When I was in school 30 years ago, there were so many engineering graduates that you would have to send out 1,000 resumes to get two interviews. You would have to graduate from a top university to get one job offer. When everyone tries to do the same thing, the outcome is never positive.

You can do a series about double majors or major+minor combinations that support each other. For example, if I want to add a second major after English, what should it be? I finished my math undergrad 2 years ago and am now doing a master's in financial engineering. With the way things are going, I don't think simple finance and economics degrees will cut it in the future for a job at hedge funds or investment banks specifically because quants are becoming more and more popular for even the trading positions. And many if not all hedge funds REQUIRE a MS or PhD.

I am the other way around. Math for me was "yeah its neat and all but so what" but physics actually had reasons for it. it can explain fundamental understanding of our place in the universe/ reality. not saying I am going to be the next einstein to discover these new ideas however, learning about them and trying to apply it in real life is just fascinating to me. math was always kind of a tool for me rather than interest. yea i can own many tools but its more useful when you use the tools instead.

In the US, universities are basically split up into undergraduate and postgraduate, so most people dont go get a graduate degree unless they want to stay in academia. Here in Europe its more common to go for a Masters Degree if ur at a research university, and the only people I know that only get a bachelors go to "high schools"/vocational universities/universities of applied sciences (these are usually 4 years like the US system anyway)

To those looking for a good first programming language to learn, I recommend python. I’m finishing up my math degree right now and my college makes us take an intro python course in our freshman year. It’s very useful and is easier to learn from my experience than Java or C (for a first language), so if you’re looking to teach yourself programming, python is a good place to begin (again, this is purely my opinion based on my own experience and my colleagues’ experiences in engineering and MIS)

statistics and data science are really synonymous. Data science or Analytics are just new age buzz words for applying statistics to specific industry problems (which is not a new concept). So with that fact, data science and statistics should have the same ranking, however we will likely need more employment data on data science degrees to see how employers are perceiving it.

Shane Hummus - The Success GPS Didn’t you get a Graduate degree? And how do you feel about having to get a PharmD while there are still people working in Pharmacy with a bachelor degree in pharmacy? Unfortunately there are several jobs that now require Graduate degrees when a bachelors was previously the norm, such as “Doctor” of physical therapy, what a joke.
@aidanklobuchar1798
@aidanklobuchar1798 4 жыл бұрын
My guess is that the real issue is if an undergraduate degree requires you to get a graduate degree to find a job, thus lowering flexibility. If you get a CS or Physics degree, for example, getting a higher degree can be helpful depending on what career path you want to pursue, but if after 4 years of school you want to stop, then you aren't trapped, as those degrees can still land you jobs just fine.
@DrGamez123

If you want to do them, do them. This guy is probably coming from the perspective that grad jobs don't really pay that much more than what a grad or an honours will get you.

Imo Math degree is either an A or S rank. The outcome for these majors in the beginning are stacked higher than some of the math majors that I've seen such as Actuarial math. I know a lot of people with actuarial degree who can't find a single internship with that degree so they end up going other route like any other math majors. The amount of time and money they wasted on materials and exams was not worth it if you can't even land an internship after 2 exams. Also stats should be S rank without a shadow of a doubt. That major is red fucking hot in the market. It is partly the reason why Math and stats coexist together in S rank. I will never believe someone has a math degree if they hadn't had intermediate understanding of statistics when they graduate. Ask any Math major graduates and they'll tell you the fun starts when statistics are involved.

Economics- the study of using limited resources for unlimited wants. Is very realistic and the closest to what is happening in the real world. You learn the pros and cons of unions, scarcity, when should a company keep selling a product or stop selling say product. The demand vs supply. Is a fascinating subject that I recommend anyone to take. Tax Accounting is 90% reading, 10% math and that is due to very law heavy and knowing if is tax deferred or not. I do not see any AI replacing tax accountants. For everything from one year to the next. For example in 2019 it was 0.54 for mileage regarding if you were using your vehicle as a business or you were a lyft driver. 2020 it went up to0.60 for mileage and now lyft drivers could also include the mileage for driving the vehicle without passengers with the app on.
