Not always. I’ve never felt that mathematics was bitter. To me it’s more like a drug that I got hooked on after the very first time I experienced it. After I found proof based mathematics and the world beyond standardised tests (which really suck out the essence of mathematics completely). Though, in my childhood I did find it boring. Well, it was quite fun sometimes but also meaningless, and hence, ultimately boring. But never bitter.

What makes math beautiful? It's perfectly logical and builds off the simplist of things (1,2,3 eg counting) and then goes on to do things with Euler or Pi, logarithms, and many more. It is used in science to aid our understanding of the universe God created, it's a universal language that anyone could understand (4+1=5 whether 1 means Uno or one.)

I’ve seen a number of non-mathematicians really open up to mathematics by reading _The Music of the Primes_ by Marcus du Sautoy. It’s a fun tour through the history of prime numbers and the personalities who’ve been captivated by the primes. Likewise, books that focus on unsolved problems or famous mathematicians are generally good for getting hooked on math-and hopefully lead to enjoying the beauty of math for oneself. Personally I find beauty in Diophantus, Euclid’s _Elements_ and the Ancient Greeks. At the end of the day, proofs really are the key to math’s beauty.

What if you can prove evolution is false? Math is cool but logic is the ultimate. A is B, A isn't B, are the two greatest formulas never used by PhD logic science 101 instructors. For example, law of contradiction A is B, Illogical impossible contradiction, lets plug data into formula and critically evaluate result A non life caused the effect of B your life in the universe A is B, evolution is a false scientific hypothesis based solely on A is B being true which it isn't truth.❤❤❤

@mitchelvalentino1569 2 ай бұрын
@@robertvann7349 Evolution cannot be logically proven using the strict axiomatic and syllogistic standards required of mathematical proofs. I think even most evolutionary biologists would agree on this. But it would be hilarious to see such an attempt! It would probably have convulsions twisting around each other like a pretzel, leaving some ridiculous conclusion reminiscent of Diogenes’s chicken! Hahaha. Moreover, I don’t see mathematics and logic as being directly comparable or mutually exclusive. Mathematics may use logic within the constraints of mathematics. Similarly, philosophy may use logic in different ways within the realm of philosophy. There’s definitely a lot of overlap, and my favorite branches of mathematics certainly wouldn’t exist without formal logic.

I’d also recommend Edward Frenkel’s Love and Math. Such a wonderful book. And another great undergraduate level book of great breadth is Essential Mathematics for Undergraduates by Simon Chiossi. I’ve used it to get a general idea of what my degree will consist of and to form connections between topics often left out by materials only covering one course topic (like the characteristic function, for example, first introduced in probability without any mention of its applications in analysis). But I also have Garrity’s book and love it!

What I need now is a map: Algebra I the II then Geometry and Trig...what do think. I've been buying old texts in Ebay following your advice and it works. I got for less than $80.00. For me math is like playing a game; and not only "one game", but a game that changes every time! For instance i imagine myself as a greek writing proofs by induction by the side of Platón. Or in a math dispute between me and Pascal. Other times i feel like i have a small toolbox to solve a problem; and if i can solve it, then my toolbox magically grows! Other times i think that, by solving this math problem, later on i would be able to solve super-complex ones! Or build a rocket or do quantum stuff! Finally, i see the pure beauty of math when i solve a math problem that i created, that i questioned reality and came to a math answer! Cheers from Argentina Mr Math Sorcerer, im in first year of university, currently studying physics

After reading "The Music of the Primes," I found myself captivated and entranced by the sheer depth of mathematical exploration. This led me to explore further works detailing the contributions of mathematicians such as Archimedes, Andrew Wiles and Erdos, which only served to fuel my passion. Additionally, I was enchanted by the works of ancient Greeks, such as Euclid's "Elements," which seemed like high magic to me. Upon recognizing that the essence of mathematical endeavor lies primarily in the art of proofs, I acquired and thoroughly studied Velleman's "How to Prove It." With each chapter, I found myself drawn more deeply to the elegance and precision of mathematical argumentation, rather than the "mundane" tasks of calculation. As discussed in the video, passion for mathematics manifests in myriad ways; some are drawn to its competitive aspects, such as participation in mathematics Olympiads, while others appreciate its practical applications. Yet, in my view, the most noble and profound motivation arises from a contemplative appreciation of the mysterious and potent nature of mathematics, pursuing it solely for the enrichment of the spirit.

Thank you for your videos. You inspire me immensely. Lemme tell you my unasked story. I was literally The Guy From the Back of the Classroom in my school in Russia. I thought that math is the worst. I couldn't handle basic fractions in 11'th grade and it's miracle that I managed to finish my school without any problems. It was possible solely through copying good students and decent intuition. In fact, I hated everything that was in school, and if you could know what a Russian governmental school (and everything governmental here, actually) is - you would understand me. But there was three things that were my jam - programming, music and biology (especially, botanics). Thanks god they didn't seriously teach music. If it would be the case - I'd have to overcome distaste for music too. Now I'm 36, I'm a programmer with a 12 years of experience and I started to love math. I want to teach myself math from the ground up. So, I started to learn math textbooks from the 1'st grade. Yeah, 2+2 and so on. Not that I can't do basic math operations - sure I can. But I can't be sure that I didn't miss anything. So, 4 months on this path - now I'm learning about quadratic equations. And I fear, what if I just dumb? It's strange - the higher, the more abstract the topic - the more it makes sense for me. I went through discrete math and mathematical logic in my institute - and I was pretty ok at that. But basic mental calculations, fractions and basic algebraic simplifications seemed impossible to me. And now, I spent whole 4 months practicing basic algebra and prealgebra and it was the hardest I've ever done. Especially, fractions and mental calculations - I mix numbers every time, I can't remember timetables to this very day. But when there's letters - then I start to understand. What's wrong with me? Do I have chance to get to the interesting stuff? I'm interested in electronics, sound processing (lots of trig and calculus), cellular automata, graphics and so on. Why it's so hard to learn basics for me, but easier to understand more advanced stuff?

I think there are two reasons for the beauty of math. One is quite literal: the symbols are a form of art. In fact, my Shakespeare class was right after a pde class and my professor would always admire the equations on the blackboard (and he wouldn’t erase it because he thought it looked cool). The other I think is how everything “works out.” That is, the steps to a proof are so complementary to each other that it’s nice to see the puzzle pieces fall into place. As for utility I really don’t think any mathematicians care about it. It’s like a football game, sure winning is fun, but the best parts are actually throwing the ball or making a catch. As for math, whether the theorem can be applied is secondary because the real fun is the actual process of solving it!

I used to have an admiration for arts. When I had discovered that math had other symbols I was mind-blown. The beauty was the symbols. My most favorite symbol of them all is the Integral Symbol. Since everyone is extremely different, I think you'll just have to keep studying different math subjects till you run across one that provides the sympathetic vibrations which will indicate you've found what you're looking for. For me, it's proofs and discrete math, which, as with most subjects regardless of how well they describe them or the title they give it, I have no idea about what it is till I start reading the textbook. For you, it may be something entirely different. But since not everyone is here for the same use of talents or purpose, you may not find it at all, but rather find it in another field. However, since math is fundamental to so many fields, being practiced in math will only help you anywhere else. Proofs, as mentioned in the video, are useful for me for a few reasons. 1. Most people don't seem to care about the fact that they need to prove what they say. That isn't math, but studying proofs will show you not just how to prove math, but also prove your arguments, and logic is a part of proof writing. And 2. I was defending myself against criminals at age 3, so them constantly saying the usual argument liars use when they know they're guilty, "you can't prove that," was so annoying, that I'm still studying how to prove things.

People come in various “types.“ I happen to be a type that can appreciate that math is beautiful. I once worked for a man who saw math only as a tool. I heard him comment, one time, that he could not understand some individuals thinking of math as beautiful. His tone of voice revealed the sincerity of his statement. As I grew to know the man better, I learned of his very practical nature: colors, even, were not as beautiful to him either, as they would be to the average person. Yes, he was so practical that even abstract thought was not his specialty, even though he was a professional engineer. It is true that he was color-blind. But I do not see how that affliction would necessarily extend to not seeing math as beautiful. One reason for the beauty of math is its amazing correlation with nature, and the physical nature of the universe.

As someone who has a passion for math, I can agree with math sorcerer about the beauty of proofs. I fell in love with math in 10th grade before 2017 because I was curious about the proof of every topic in Algebra 2. Without proof, mathematics had no meaning. I remember my first math proof was measuring the circumference of the water bottle cap and measuring the Diameter and I got a value of nearly π(pi) That was my first proof. I remember being jealous of my peers because they knew more math than I did but I bet none of my peers know the math I know now not even the proof of the quadratic formula. I've grown into a Monster. I invented math formulas and developed new methods to compare fractions in 2023 and a new method to compare exponential expressions in 2024. I'm always grinding. 📖 🤓

i know very slightly more than nothing about maths but i still kinda love it. even people who know less than me know fractals are pretty. i think it's beautiful because there's literally nothing wrong with it and you can potentially theoretically explain everything that's ever existed and happened with it and even the things that don't seem to make sense you KNOW do actually make sense. one of the hardest parts for me (speaking as an idiot) is the notation or whatever it's called, i tried to learn hindi but i couldn't figure out all the funny pictures, it's kinda like that. if maths notation was what it looked like in bc i'd find that helpful. i think some of the things i said might not be true but ykwim. i'll put it down to commenting for the algorithm so i don't have to defend myself.

Math is organization of complexity simplified down to digestible nuggets of information. For example: you could record how much interest you pay on a credit card for the next 10 years. Or, you can figure out the equation that represents the interest, and sum of the values to get an idea of the interest you will pay. [Using equations will get you close, since banks love to change interest rates and other factors to benefit them.]

It's like reading. Most students learn to hate reading books in school, where they should learn to love them. Students should be free to pick up the books they want to read, but generally they are given books that are too difficult and too boring. And they have to do some homework afterwards, like writing and essay or report on the book... Something similar happens with maths. It's because the testing-exam system dictates what the teachers have to teach and how they have to teach. I think it's easier to discover the beauty of maths in your leisure time. When you learn what you want to learn, taking your time. And if you don't like it, then you can try learning something else, until you find what you really find interesting. The chances are that with this approach, students will discover more and more beauty in more and more areas of maths. Gradually... if they are allowed to learn this way.

I found that there could complete the job in 1 day instead of 4 days of works for practically the same cost. that's the beauty of math. Math help soo much human, if they are open to use it. The reason why math is beautiful for me, is simply because truth is beautiful.

I also don't see any beauty in mathematics. I like it because of its usefulness 😂😂

I often hear "the proof that the square root of 2 is irrational is beautiful" -- I don't get it I understand the proof -- I just don't see what's beautiful about it

There are several different proofs of its irrationality, you may be looking at a relatively boring one. But yeah, the feeling of being able to state an absolute truth after a short series of logical steps is great and tidy. One can seldom do that in any other field.
