With the right technique and practice, it's nowhere near as hard as you'd think. I know because I learnt the "super man" variant of sideflips (helps you to focus specifically on where you're going to land and height)

The point of failure isn't the quantity of layers. It's where the layers attach to the wheel. As little as 10 layers will support you if you manage to make the anchor point as strong.

I was waiting till someone said this. Yes, it's not the layers but the adhesive strength near the ring. He could have used far less tape if he just wound it around the ring's diameter

As others have pointed out, the main issue comes from the fact that stacked layers of tape are still relying on the same amount of adhesive to keep it on the frame. Which is why the tape itself isn't ripping, it's just sliding off of the frame.

This tape snapped easily 1 layer thick, the adhesive came loose much later. There are still bits of tape attached at both ends at 10 layers thick. Any wider than 5/6 and you would have to start weaving the tape together

If you notice the tape breaks near the steel frame. So theoritically you can use less layer in the midspan just by having more layer near the steel frame area.

If it only breaks off the frame but the tape itself doesn't snap, then the adhesive is the failure point. Layering tape doesn't improve that failure point, but putting more tape in contact with the bar does improve it. Only if the tape itself breaks does adding layers help.

Yeah, Women weigh less. I could probably land on 15 layers. As a female gymnast I have to say. Women do this all the time. Things just aren't as likely to break😂😂 I knew one female gymnast/acrobat who climbed down 6 stories using only the windowsills. Another girl jumped from a third story hotel room into the pool. We can be just as stupid, just a bit lighter.😂

It actually starts to work between 5 and 10 layers (or at 10 if they're doubling it every time). It goes from the tape failing (breaking) to the adhesive failing

I was thinking the same thing. At 10, it went from the tape breaking in half to it failing to remain secured. (I GUESS one could argue that IF it held, it would have broke. but even then it probably would have worked at 15.)
