I work in a camera store that devlops film, just go to your local film lab and ask if you can have a used disposable camera or two, we simply throw out away 100's of used ones a week. I wouldnt hesitate to give a used one away for free if someone asked!

I think this is my favorite of your videos you've ever made. It is really impressive what a couple of well-engineered plastic aspheres can do, especially near the diffraction-limited aperture. Trying the extension tubes was especially clever and an added facet to an already wonderful film. Thank you for making this! Photons don't care how much the optics cost, they only care where they are going next :).

I remember working in 1-Hour-Photo and popping these cameras open many times every day. We always would keep the AA batteries because Kodak & Fuji only liked to use fresh batteries when they would come collect/re-use the empty camera cases. Fun memories :)

After watching the smarter everyday tour of their film labs and production, I would imagine Kodak also spent a ton of time and effort to get that plastic lens just right: Cheap and fast/easy to produce, while having at least "not terrible" quality... But most importantly, THE SAME "not terrible" quality across millions of units sold for decades.

No need to send in the camera when the film has been exposed. These cameras have a regular 35mm film cartridge inside but the film transport works opposite compared to normal film cameras. When you buy one, all the unexposed film is prewound onto the second spool. When taking pictures you rewind the film back into the cartridge so when all film is exposed the film is wound safely into the cartridge and you can open the camera, take it out and have it developed like any other 35mm cartridge.

Be very careful when dismantling disposable cameras; the flash unit's capacitor holds a LOT of charge. I remember taking one apart when I was a child, touching the bare capacitor, and having my arm thrown back by the electric shock. I even got a little pinprick hole on my skin, and I don't know if it was a burn or if I poked myself on something when my arm was being thrown away.

1:16 be very careful. For the flash, there is a >300V capacitor in there that could killl you when touched. ONLY PROCEED WITH GOOD INSULATING GLOVES AND DO NOT TOUCH THE CIRCUITRY When the cam makes the whine noise while loading the flash, the 300V capacitor gets charged. It has enough capacity to dump enough energy into your heart to make it beat asynchronously. If you happen to touch it and get an electric shock, immediately seek a doctor

@@connoisseurdumbass1863 I am going to give it a go on my old 'beater' DSLR, (a Nikon D50). Provided that the lens/cap doesn't get in the way of the mirror, I cant see the harm in trying it. I suspect that it will be too far from the sensor to work as a "6ft-Infinity" lens per the video but, bearing in mind that it was quite spaced out with Macro tubes to get it to work as Macro, it could well work as a "0-3ft" macro lens. I'll let you know how I get on once the cheapo body cap is have ordered arrives. I got the lens for £3 donation to charity via our local film processor.

@@connoisseurdumbass1863 well, bodycaps arrived today. Quick mark up and drill with a step drill out to nearly 16mm: fitted the lens with the front bezel outside the cap and the rear part behind the cap. Looks good, and takes great macro photos at a distance of about 4 inches, with a depth of field of about 0.75"! Make for some interesting challenging shots. Useful? Not really, but cool for the £4 and 10mins it took to make.

I have a similar thing, it's made out of a 110 format broken film camera lens that I adapted to work with my pentax DSLR using a cracked double concave lens. I assembled the whole thing in m42 macro adapters as the body and it actually works. My wonky optics knowledge multiplied by the concave lens (out of a light condensor probably) that is dead by any photographer's standards give the picture something resembling quality in the middle while the edges get increasingly blurry. Also chromatic aberration. A lot of it. In other words, if you want digital lomography or "drunk/drugged vision lens" this kind of technique is the way to go

Honestly though; if you want a perfect film look; get some on a lovely slr, like a nikon f-series from the 80's, or an old fashioned praktica; as the m42 mount has so much beautiful glass❤️ and load in some lovely Lomography colour film, like the 400, which has this classic warm kodak film look from the 90's which is why I love it so much, (even though nikon glass is crazily expensive tho.. >.>)

You may only be able to focus up close. Basically a macro lens. I tried it with an EF Mount and you can only focus up close. Reasoning being the flange distance. All lenses are designed to be a certain distance from the focal plane in order to achieve “infinity focus”. Give it a shot though. Still fun to use.

I tried it with a Z6. Its fun and the lens is surprisingly good. But it would be nice to have some kind of mechanism to move the lens a few millimeter. I don't need it to go full macro. But for Portraits it's better move it a little away from the sensor to blur the background. For everything else I want everything sharp. Well, at least as sharp as this thing gets.

tested on Canon 6D. Works, but as macro. you need to close up with your subject to be in focus. it is a fun project, at least I learnt a new thing.

After seeing this video last week I had to give it ago, I bought a slightly cheaper Ilford xp2 disposable, I don't think it's any less sharp on my A7iii than this Kodak version. Just used bit of double sided 3M tape to help keep lens in place and pop some super glue on around the lens to help keep our dust from any gaps around the lens in the body cap. Good little hack.
