A trapezoid always has the bases parallel to each other. The example in this problem is a special trapezoid (isoscoles) where the angles that join to the bottom base are equal, therefore the 2 angles that join to the top base are equal and the 2 opposite side lengths are equal. Area of a trapezoid = 1/2(base1 + base2)*height. Area 1st example = 1/2(25+15)*5 = 100. A trapezoid is a 2-dimensional shape so it doesn't have volume, only area. Since a trapezoid has the 2 bases parallel to each other, it will only have one height. So your 2nd example will not result in a trapezoid.

You can use Heron's formula with triangle. Find semiperimeter = perimeter/2 s = (10 + 12 + 14)/2 = 36/2 = 18 Heron's formula = sqrt[s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)] = sqrt[18(18-10)(18-12)(18-14)] = Sqrt[18*8*6*4] = Sqrt(3456) = 24sqrt6 Multiply this number by 2 since there are 2 of these triangles in the parallelogram. At= 1/2 h (b1+b2) I know this was a very late reply but that was the formula of a trapezoid.
