I had the honor to play against him as a youth player. He played for Elinkwijk in that time together with Vanenburg. I had no doubt that once he would be world league and one of the best players of all time.

Right foot, Left foot, Headers, Speed, Skill, Short range, Long range, finesse, power, tap ins, bicycle kicks, dribbling, passing/assists...Could do it all. Sad to see his career cut short, Van Basten was kicked and fouled constantly in an era of football when players weren’t protected as they are now. Those of us who were lucky to see him play for AC Milan and earlier for Ajax will know. I wish the quality of the videos were better for everyone to see, but thank you for uploading this compilation. My favorite player of all time, Marco van Basten.

H.M. Murdock exactly right ! I wrote almost exactly the same words about him somewhere once, quite possibly the most complete footballer ever to play, he had it all and played an entire career like he did virtually injured. Behind Maradona in my opinion there is none better than Marco !

Power and grace. Fluid, elegant, tough and fast. What a player. The most beautiful movements and coordination I've ever seen on a field. In a AC Milan full of legends. Thinking of him in the same team with Baresi, Maldini, Gullit and Rjikard, gives me goosebump, it is unbelievable. Marco, thanks for existing.

He wasn't tough physically.. He was actually pretty fragile and got injured easily from the knocks he took. He scored beautiful goals though.

People from the Netherlands will probably remember that till the mid 80s we only had Dutch football on TV but when Gullit, Rijkaard and Van Basten played for AC Milan, we got an entire program dedicated to them and the Italian league. There was no internet so you didn't know anything until they showed the highlights and believe me, they hardly ever disappointed.

I was in Australia and we had Saturday morning week wrap of soccer. The only names I remembered were AC Milan: Gullit, Rijkaard and van Basten. You are absolutely right about the highlights reel. We had a good sense of when, at the end of the show, the highlights reel would be on and had alarms set.

R9 is good in dribling,skills,balance,control ball,sprint. But Van basten is more to Vollley,heading,shot power. for me both of them is great of course their gameplay is not the same because football is follow the manager tactician.

When I was a kid and used to play ball with my friends, I always wanted to be a striker inspired by two players. Marco Van Basten and Jürgen Klinsmann. Both made me see football as art and not a simply sport. No player today plays with such class! Good ol times.

Ive seen kanes rise from a shit youth striker to one of the most prolific strikers in the epl...u might think hes not as naturally talented as Van basten (which he aint) but the numbers dont lie.Its not like pop music where someone like Drake is shit but is number 1 because he's been chosen. Higuain scored 36 in Serie A one season, does that make him better than all previous Serie A strikers like Ronaldo, Van Basten, Batistuta, Del Piero, Shevchenko, etc...? Definitely not. Numbers don't lie but without context they mean little. More goals are scored today and more games are played in a season compared to then.

I will explain you fully of details. Messi it was an amazing player between 2008-12, before(2005-08) didn't exist and after that just he lives by the past glory that his team mates Xavi and iniesta achieved and he got the glory of them, since 2012 isn't anymore Messi, is better to be call him "Pessi". You talked about the 91 goals in 2012...and you forgot that he lost the League, he lost the UCL(he missed the final penalty that give his team the pass to the final) and he just won a "King Spanish cup". He scored a lot of goals...unnecessaries to teams like Eibar,Leganes or Las Palmas. Why he didn't deserve that Fifa Balon D'oro but CR7 must to win that year?? Simple, because CR7 in 2012 he won exactly the same as Messi in 2011 and FifaBalon d'oro denied him to gave to his protect child. Now lets travel back to 2015...The season 2014-15 with Luis Enrique as a coach didn't started as well as FCB didn't in the last 3 years of Messi dragging and vomiting on the pitch. The coach putted him as a 10 far away from the Forward position where he was played the last decade because he didn't have the speed and powerful starting as the beginning and with Neymar and Luis Suarez from Feb-May 2015 they won the treble, because of Real Madrid's fell and because and extraordinary Neymar and Suarez that won all the matches to reach the final, Messi was "missing" as usualy from the group to the final. he and ronaldo have terrible injuries both as youngs superstars, both won multiple ballon de oro before the injuries, not one of them get healthy to their prime 26-29 still they are at the top of strikers ever, and if healthy problably with a lot more of arguments to the GOAT in the world and in their country, pele in braz and cruyff in holanda for a lot of people in their country still is the top

The two things in which I believe Van Basten is better than R9: - His outrageous heading technique (Real Madrid goal anyone?) - The way in which he sets up the actions with his team mates Van Basten was incredibly complete, and he played with an unmatched elegance

@@Bill-Butcher Ronaldo had better vision, that's how you can be at right place at right time, his only problem was Ronaldo played very selfish games, he clearly had better passing and set peice ability than Marco. Even Marco, Rickard, and capello confirm Ronaldo is better, it's just that Ronaldo got injured earlier than Marco. I think we shouldn't compare as Marco played in his prime where as Ronaldo had to watch his teammates from screen at home or hospital

That goal @8:54 is an outrageous piece of skill. The way he volleyed the ball into the ground for it to bounce back up.. incredible. I tried so many times to do that and never even got close. 10 out of those 14 are dutch you mook.... Gullit was not a striker.... And there are severel strikers who never played in the dutch league: Shevchenko, Drogba, Eto'o, Batistuta, Crespo, Aguero, Raul, George Weah, Thierry Henry, Lewandowski, Salah.

Batigol and Scheva were amazing, but what about Gerd Muller, Ferenc Puskas, Thierry Henry (even tho I’d take Sheva over him any day), Hugo Sanchez, Eusebio etc? Oh and that Pele guy. I feel that there’s someone at Sheva/Bati’s level once every decade or so, but the others stand out more and are not so easily imitated?

How scary Holland would've been in the early 90's with bergkamp on 10 and a healthy van basten as the dream finisher. Gullit Rijkaard Koeman supplemented with the next ajex generation winning the CL in 1995, Van basten would've been 32 @ the euro cup '96. Could've possibly even played the worldcup 1998. What could have been :)

@Keagen Jones Dharmawan If I could (and I tried!), I'd give both a thumbs up and down. Marco was a sumptuous striker, no doubt. Euro 88 and many of his AC Milan exploits are magnificent. BUT, with due respect, R9...El Phenomenal, was dubbed that for a reason!! 28 to 34...hmm..there's no guarantee Marco would have won a World Cup, shone in a further two global plus Euro Comps. It's speculation. IMO, Van Basten was a better header of the ball than Ron...but for pace, power, skill, big game performances, edge o your seat thrills...fame breaking moments....!!! See World Cup '98 Brazil v Netherlands....what a game!! See Brazil v Turkey...twice, in Korea and Japan 2002!!! See Germany v Brazil 2002 World Cup Final!!!! His exploits for PSV then Barca were nothing short of stellar!!! That Marco can be discussed in the same breath/on the same page...THAT IS A MARK O RESPECT TO MARCO :))

In england I use to rush back after football on a Sunday my gran would have my dinner ready and my grandfather and me would watch football Italia sera a it would usely be a big game followed by highlights .for me as a English kid their was no better player on the planet. van basten ruud and frank and Maldini. I never hear any one really talk of the greatest left back in my history Maldini. Ruud was one of the greatest midfielders and rikard at back .those players at ac Milan then van basten up front .van basten had so much more to offer but injury at his peak .van basten no 1 for me .then the Zidane Ronaldo Ronaldinho Messi Roberto Baggio Batistuta Romario Brazilian Ronaldo getting a standing ovation at old Trafford in CL .van basten no1

His technique...is basically flawless. Left foot, right foot, beating players with simple moves, headers, speed, tap ins, chips. This is the complete striker. And imagine that during his prime, he was basically playing injured and retired at 28. Thats crazy.

I once saw a slowmotion closeup of van Basten dribbling past defenders in a small space. He's up there with R9. And back then, he WAS up there with R9. How football seems to have forgotten about him is a bit of a mystery to me.

Elegante, tecnicamente eccezionale, ambidestro, veloce ( per un'atleta così alto ) letale, decisivo nelle partite importanti, tatticamente perfetto, armonioso. È riuscito a fare dei gol semplicemente impensabili. Un diamante puro. Lo ammirava anche il grande Diego. He was more elegant with his play, intelligent also.. R9 was more aggressive, pacey, skilled.. R9 was feared.. Ronaldo of Brazil was something else with power, speed.. Maradona to messi.. Its the animal thing that makes Maradona get it done.. Confidence about his ability, same was Pele, Maradona, euberio, R9
