House & Garden

2 жыл бұрын

Cobblestones inspired by a London mews street, borders made from reclaimed railway sleepers found on eBay, hedging which gives the space the feel of a secret garden, and planting that looks verdant all year round without a blade of grass in sight. In the fourth episode of our renovation video series 'Evolution of a Home' Matilda Goad takes us through the sparkling, unusual design of her garden.
As a novice gardener Matilda's brief to the garden designer Butter Wakefield was that the space had to be low maintenance but with some hardy flowers for cutting and bringing indoors, plenty of space for long summer lunches with friends and, crucially, a dash of the same character and whimsy that Matilda has applied to the interiors of her home.
'The Evolution of a Home with Matilda Goad' is a brand new renovation video series from House & Garden packed with ideas to copy. In 2018 House & Garden began following the renovation of the British designer and creative consultant Matilda Goad's new home. Our aim was to create a series charting the journey of a house over a period of years, to reassure people decorating their own homes that it doesn’t happen overnight. That creating a layered, interesting interior is something that happens in stages, and that those stages aren't always linear or smooth.
Tune in on Friday November 26 for Episode 5: Matilda's Design Process and Sourcing. If you can't wait until then read our story on Matilda's home:

I think what I find so refreshing is the mentions of budget restriction and or usage of IKEA or otherwise. It's been so nice to have that realistic touch serve as ACUTAL inspiration for our own spaces.

I’m Canadian and British and this is what keeps me in the U.K. - I love the quirkiness of people’s homes and especially their gardens here. Gardening is a national pastime! I think with my family in the GTA part of the problem is that so much of the year it’s either too hot or too cold to spend too much time outside. Of course, we’re also blessed in the U.K. to have perfect conditions for gardening: summers with long daylight hours, mild winters, and lots and lots of rain so it’s not expensive at all to keep things watered.

My only question is: since I love butter so much, why didn't I name my daughter Butter? That was a brilliant move by Butter's mom. I've wondered about this too -- Matilda Goad seems like a big enough deal that surely they have money to not be so budget-conscious?? -- but have come to the conclusion that perhaps a big part of their budget was in all the structural changes of the house (to say nothing of buying the thing...), and the 'niceties' are where they have to get more creative. (Which sometimes means a better result!)

Mr David Nicholls, deputy editor of ‘House and Garden’ (UK), designed a pictograph of stick-figure corpses, arranged in a numbered grid of equal columns and rows, upon a piece of paper. He then, with a pencil, filled in the lines between the bodies so as to outline a Swastika, laughing: “This game is called - Connect the Jews!” Think this anecdote to be bullsh*t? It’s never a good idea to have the boundaries of your garden visible. Nothing makes it feel so small and restrictive and flat as that. Cover your fences, create little paths and borders, it gives the illusion of more space because there is more to EXPLORE.
