Taking what could have been an hour long lecture and distilling it down to about 15 minutes or so kinda hurt. Yet, here we are with a, hopefully, easy to digest video going over the VERY BASIC outline of The Matins

Dude every video I see you are wearing a better band shirt Cathedral RULES. What is it with metal dudes eventually becoming Orthodox monks I believe that I will eventually spend some time in a monastic life as I have been to the HTM during my awakening. Glad to be insane. I do wish more would see the value (if not the necessity) of attending both vespers and matins - that fuller commemoration of the saints being a major benefit. Tempted to send you an Agalloch shirt but they were just a little pagan.

Are there any other parishes within reasonable driving distance that do? The Greek parish I go to doesn't do vespers, but they will have it on the calendar for the Antiochian, Russian, Serbian, OCA and a couple more. There a very few Orthodox parishes in my area but we manage to have one representative of each jurisdiction - or almost. I am not suggesting moving to a new different parish but it's worth the experience.

I like orthros service. After almost a year of coming to the orthodox church, I've finally figured out why our priest kept telling us not to cross ourselves during the 6 psalms. From what I've learned, the reading of the 6 psalms represents our(weekly?)judgment. I guess kinda like being in a court of law, standing before a judge waiting sentencing. The 6 psalms are fairly negative and even violent. So, my sponsor/godmother told me, don't make the sign of the cross, don't light a candle, don't venerate the icons, don't perform a metania, until the end of the readings. Stand still and be attentive. Interesting.

This also what I was told. It is also connected to the pious tradition that the Six Psalms should take 12minutes to read, and that this is the same amount of time that it will take for the Last Judgment (and the Six Psalms will be read during the Last Judgment. I wouldn’t put too much weight into this pious tradition of course. Some parishes rotate through doing 2 of the 6 psalms at vigils/matins, and there are some prayer rules where people do 1 of the 6 psalms each morning Monday-Saturday.
