Hi Guys! In this video, I compare two great Maton guitars. When I first got into Matons I wish someone had made more videos like this where I could compare different models. I hope this helps you hear the characteristics of each, and the different woods and tones you can get from guitars. Tommy’s I like best. How does the Michael Fix compare to it? Are those your own arrangements? I like your playing, you should quit your day job.

Loving Tommy as I do ensures I will eventually buy a Maton. I have a Martin and comprehend the joys of playing amazing instruments. The fact that I rarely if ever actually plug-in, kinda make buying a Maton unnecessary but I have to have one because of Tommy.

Artist sounds brighter, the TE sounds sweeter particularly on the strumming. Do you have a tutorial for the first blues piece you played?

They do sound very similar. I just slightly lean towards the artist because of the depth of the blackwood. But I'd take either one. Thanks for the review

Jon, I just started looking at getting a Maton, comparing specs and prices with my local dealer. I'm trading or selling a D-35 to do this because I've been impressed with the sound/tone of the EBG808. Thanks for your demo - I just found it today because I've been researching Matons. I sort of lean toward the TE Maple over the Blackwood, but I agree that they sound very similar.

given maton OM are life performance guitars, but for the the TE its even more evident. artist is sort of more mindrange and richer, while Te is dry and has perfect articulation, so i guess it will fit great into the mix.

Both beautiful sounding Matons. The Artist , to my ear anyway, sounds more earthy/woody, just beautiful. The TE sounds awesome as well, a little brighter or twangier (if that's a word), but I guess thats to be expected with the maple b&s. I would more than likely choose the Artist (should I be so lucky to have a choice btwn these two beauties) just for that lovely earthy, organic blackwood tone.

Thank you for this great test. I prefer the Maton EBG808 Artist blackwood with a little more bass. But the brighter TE is also very interesting. In fact, you have to have both !!!

They both sound great, the TE sounds a little warmer & richer. I've got a TE and it's beautiful, just wish I had longer skinnier fingers like you mate, cheers (from Australia).

To my ear the TE is brighter more mid treble in the spectrum and seems to project more forward tone. The Artist is articulate more mid range focused with better balance across the tone frequency spectrum. Both similar but slight nod to the Artist

cmc6 sounds amazing. those are £2000 mics, I appreciate people use good microphone to record a high end guitar.

I went hands on to both of these guitars, side-by-side. The action of the TE was much more to my liking. I can see the resistance in this man’s players on the TE. I prefer the stronger, pliable action to be like the TE.

I wonder what the Maton founder, the late Bill May, would have thought of these guitars? (MATON = MAY TONE) Elvis Presley played a Maton HG100 jumbo flattop in a scene in Jailhouse Rock (1957) so it would be interesting to hear a comparison between the older Matons with the newer models. I have a 1956 Maton HG100 (HG = Hillbilly Guitar) that Bill May himself restored for me in the 1960s. It has a different sound to my old Martins, but it still sounds & plays great after 63 years.

@@paulf2534 Bill May founded Maton 75 years ago in 1946. A few years ago, I was shown the first Maton guitar, Serial number 1, which is an F hole archtop which is/was in private hands. Maton borrowed it to take photos.

Maton makes a great guitar. They sound really similar plugged in. A lot of the plugged in sound comes from the pickup.

as you say,the two guitars sound very similar,..maybe the Artist has a "warmer" and louder sound ,but maybe I am wrong .can I ask you which one do you personally prefer?

The TE, a little more resonance in the higher register. For acoustic comparisons, should probably play Classical style (on left knee) so the back of the guitar is not touching your body.

That does not really work with this style of playing. Especially when you have to bring your thumb over which is basically in every fingerpicking tune.

Guitars are like good women. When you love the playability & sound, the size & shape doesn't matter . Personally I prefer the full rich tone of dreds & jumbos. Perhaps, for Jon MacLennan's next video, we can hear a comparison between a Maton Messiah (dred) and the 808s.

@john dolores Many say that the smaller guitars are better for fingerpicking but I question that. Try fingerpicking a Martin JC Buddy Guy (jumbo). If you can get over the turquoise polka dots on the fretboard, the playability & sound is fantastic.
