Hey, everyone! Here's Jesse to run you through the differences between the Maton and the Collings "OM" body shape. Both guitars sport Indian Rosewood back and sides, while the Collings has a Sitka Spruce top, and the Maton has a European Spruce top. Similar, but different. We'll let Jesse get into the details. Enjoy!

"If there's wind whistling between your ears, that's not our problem." HAHA I love this guy. I seriously watch these videos randomly in the background with no regard for the guitar just because I want to hear the jokes. Please bring this guy back. Either that or he needs to just start his own youtube channel and do whatever he wants because he's hilarious.

I have both guitars, I love them and are very close run thing between them. But it is when you plug the Maton in it blows your mind, so for me the Maton is better everyday, I rarely use the Collings!

I'm a proud Australian and have owned many Maton's, on this occasion the Collings wins hands down, so much richer with way nicer bass response, the maton sounds thin and brittle in comparison

How about a comparison with the Maton Messiah 808? Same woods as the Collings, albeit slightly different shapes, but well within the comparison ballpark.

I have heard Andy has gone from Maton as he was very sick. A huge loss to Maton, and very sad. I'm an Australian guitarist that loves Gibson, Martin, and Maton. I have them all, and appreciate them all for what they are and how they play. The best the world has to offer. They all sound incredible

Nice review... I own a Maton Messiah (50th BD) and am extremely happy with it - more of a dreadnought shape though. The Collings OM2H is my next purchase (60th BD)! They are all lovely guitars - you can go on a tour of the Maton factory if you are ever in Melbourne.

Great comparison! Both wonderful guitars. I already knew that the Collings OM2H is an incredible guitar, i would probably want an Adi top for it. But the Maton CS played unplugged is a discovery for me and totally defies the „myth“ that Maton only sounds good plugged in. They are different yes, difficult decision to decide for one. Exactly boils down to personal preferences .... and even then not easy

I personally own the maton messiah, which is the highest production model, just under custom shop. The guitar has the AP5 pro so it's a beast live when amplified but acoustically I wish it had more to offer for sure. That said, I often read that maton custom shops add quite a bit more to the acoustic sounds
@ChristophHenrici
@ChristophHenrici 9 ай бұрын
@@vyvynylification Exactly today i would go clearly for the Collings, the Maton‘s are simply put electric guitars that sound more or less like a acoustic guitar for big stages …. and are acoustically completely disappointing. I bought myself one , but had to return it. Maton only exists because of TE, sorry. Collings sounds great both acoustically and plugged in.

Maton is obviously braced differently. Therefore it shimmers in a glorious Maton style. Their sound is pretty unique, which is further emphasised with rosewood. Collings guitar is equally fine, but with different bracing resulting in more subdued, "traditional" (or "predictable") tone.

The Collings has a richer, warmer sound in the non amplified realm, however I would buy the spruce/blackwood Maton Artist primarily for the AP5 and it would be a lesser hit to my funds.I do love me a Collings tho.

not many can stand up to a Collings ❕ try Collings vs scgc , Martin , Bourgeois. if the Maton is anywhere near a Larrivee , Taylor , Breedlove , Gibson then that's a great class of builder's to belong to , just a single rung below Collings , and I don't mean in tone or build , but in buyer appeal ❕😍 all these builders produce phenomenal guitars ❕❕🐸

Both guitars sound amazing but the Maton sounds brighter, probably due to strings. Maton use elixer strings from factory and that definitely changes things. As an Australian and Maton lover myself it hurts me to say that Matons are a little overbuilt, they are sturdy trusty workhorses, but for true acoustic bliss I would pick Martin, Larivee, Collings etc. Plug a Maton in though... That's a different story. Soooo good. Brilliant pick up systems.

I knew before the fade in it was the collings haha. Doesnt help that the matons have a big steel block under the bridge for the pickup also.
@ArtisanGuitars
@ArtisanGuitars 3 жыл бұрын
FYI, Maton has 6 individual pickups mounted inside the guitar, one for each string, recessed into the top beneath the bridge. They are conductive material, mounted on an "aluminum" rail - very light weight. All in all, very effective design that offers a natural sound of the acoustic guitar.
@clintwhite3021
@clintwhite3021 3 жыл бұрын
@@ArtisanGuitars Yea I actually pulled mine apart as it wasn't conducting so well. Each conductor was rough and not making contact well. Yep it's cast alloy and reasonably light but surely effects the dampening of the soundboard. Anyhow they are fantastic pickups when playing live I'd love to install one on my other guitars but you'd have to remove the bridge and drill a bunch of holes haha :)

I am sure Maton makes nice guitars, But the Collings is just on different level tone wise, it just fills the room, much more resonant deeper bass response. I think the Maton is much more geared to be play through and amp to hear it's best offerings.

@lachlanhiggs 4 жыл бұрын
There’s a big difference with the Maton’s chime. It’s more defined and seems to have better bass clarity. Not sure if it’s just the Elixr’s on the Maton helping that but the Collings sounds muddier and the notes die out more quickly.

You are comparing two completely different guitars. One is an Acoustic without a pick up/mic system and designed to be played unplugged. The CS Classic is an electric acoustic designed to be plugged in. I own the CS Classic it sings when you plug it in The AP5 pick up system is amazing. So I don't see how you can make a comparison.
@ArtisanGuitars
@ArtisanGuitars 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Comparing "two completely different guitars" was the point of the video. We appreciate your opinion and pointing out the stellar attributes of the proprietary Maton AP5-PRO electronics - nothing quite like them on the planet for live performance (and we have the professional "A" list players in Nashville to prove it). Though we also have had extensive experience with Andy Allen's Custom Shop builds, on many different levels. Our feeling is, the Maton Custom Shop models (vs. team built Maton models) come quite close to the tonal quality and responsiveness of many handcrafted guitars from U.S. builders. While voiced differently, this in no way suggests one is better than the other. We are simply allowing the viewer to decide. And, speaking to our challenge in electrifying acoustic guitars for professionals, we are confident our experience is the same as the majority of industry professionals around the country... Most after-market electronic kits do not adequately replicate the acoustic attributes of our handcrafted guitars for live performance. In this regard, Maton is committed to building the guitar around their electronics.
