The whole idea (and production) of the "mola" system is from an Brazilian Engineer. I was able to see one presentation of the initial system at "Instituto de Engenharia" in Sao Paulo (6 years ago). I'm a structural engineer from Brazil and I live in CA since 2015. I spent most of my time in Irvine - Orange County. I tried many times to contact you (to make a networking), but no reply back... Now I'm in Davis, where I'm gonna start my graduate studies. I hope one day to meet you in person. My goal is to study seismic analysis, since we do not have it in Brazil. Nice work with the channel, congratulations. Ohh! by the way "mola" means spring in Portuguese.

Pre-ordered mine on July 26th, kit released on 31st of July and it arrived yesterday all the way from Brazil! (I’m in the UK). I’m amazed by it! The box is wayyy larger than it is on video and I can’t wait to create more structures with it.

Although I finally landed on the Chemical Engineering square I still recall building structures with the plastic Kenner Girder and Panel kits and spending a great deal of time torsioning, tensioning and compressing these small red plastic test structures and 'feeling' the reactions. What I would have given to have had any of these Mola kits. Thanks for the video.

I think for that slender column example, even with the rigid joints you put in, one direction is braced yes due to the adjacent braced bay, but the other direction it's acting as a sway frame so technically its unbraced
@MatPicardal
@MatPicardal 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. What's cool about the model is that even though it's technically unbraced, you can see/feel that putting a beam there definitely helps prevent column buckling. And in real life, we'd check that the stiffnesses of the columns were actually strong enough to be consider as braced.

I'm designing a 4'x5' CNC router table out of 8020 aluminum extrusions. It is overkill when I could have probably just built a wood frame. I am trying to figure out the most efficient way to build a strong frame that could support 200lbs. Since it is aluminum, it will have some flex and I don't want it to deform especially after I paid so much!

Hi Mat. I'll likely end up buying one of these for my office. Which one of the Mola Kits do you recommend? I might be leaning towards kit 2, as it seems to include a little of everything.
@MatPicardal
@MatPicardal 3 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on what you're into building. Mola 1 is the most basic, but it has longer span members and diaphragm/plates. Mola 2 has fancier moment/splice connections, but smaller span members and diaphragm/plates. Mola 3 is great if you're into bridges and tension members, but doesn't come with diaphragms. If you look at the manuals online, they go more in depth on the parts. I personally would've just gone with Mola 1 since it's the bread and butter and allows me to play with the seismic behavior of the diaphragms.

Yeah, they are kind of expensive for students and young professionals, but I think they were originally meant for educators/schools/large companies, but it's great knowing they are available to the public as well, but at a price.

I think that's just because he puts some lateral force on the joint rather than a pure axial load? He technically didn't say it wouldn't buckle under lateral loading (ie wind or seismic loading) so fair enough Mat :')

Is there a lot of demand in civil engineering? Is it worth studying civil engineering? I like the profession but I don't know if it has a great future.
@mrjukes9234
@mrjukes9234 3 жыл бұрын
There's demand for construction management imho. Working for a general contractor, you get to see the engineering in action if your in the field. There, you could witness the assembling steel structures (moment/bolted connections, steel shapes, etc.), placement of slabs/walls/rebar/anchor bolts, soil preperation, etc. You may be able to be involved with some layout/field measuring (ie. surveying). You may get to be involved with crane plans and heavy lifts. If your working with buildings, and depending on they company, you will likely have to work with non-civil stuff as well like carpet/paint/cabinets, mep, fire protection etc. All that to say you can work for a construction company rather than a design firm and maintain an appreciation for civil engineering even if you arent designing on paper per say.
