Aside from the Tech Matt is just really good at telling stories and keeping the audience attention without blowing stuff up.

Where things get interesting is knowing how to draw a distinction between GAP khaki generic vs style. I’m oversimplifying, but I think it’s a distinction we want to be aware of. Speaking of contrast filters: I’ve been trying to wrap my head around all of them, and especially once we introduce the cinema contrast filters my head explodes.

Yeah, filters can be a lot. I generally don't use many, just some VND's and a few 1/8 and 1/4 mist for when I need them.

Luc, not that it matters, but out of curiosity, can you tell what camera he’s using these days? Looks like an a7s iii based on the markings on the exposure compensation dial.

I find him incredibly off-putting, overflowing with hipster pathos and inauthentic, but his filmmaking style on KZfaq is very good. Much to learn. His work on the second minimalism movie was a disappointment to me though. And if you watch a lot of his content, it actually becomes predictable fast, because he has not evolved that much in the last years... I still do think that he has his craft down to a tee, and very classically so. Used to watch quite a few of his takes for inspiration.

Great breakdown, Luc. Are you using the 1/8th Pro-Mist here? I'm also curious about your thoughts on supercardiods for indoor interviews. Some audiophiles claim shotgun mics can produce coloration in highly reflective spaces. Curious what your experience has been.

I am using a 1/8. Anything more looks weird to me. In terms of audio I’m not as knowledgeable about all the nitty gritty as I should be. I just get what other professionals seem to be using! Sorry!

Used to have trouble with my NTG3 shotgun mic for indoor recording. Reflections coming off the wall can lead to strange artefacts because of the way the interference tube of a shotgun mic works. Had better luck with a pencil condenser mic like the Oktava MK012 with a super-cardioid capsule. If you want to spend more then the Sennheiser MKH 8050 and its older brother MKH50 are great options. They are known to get much use for indoor recording in TV and film.
