He always plays an asshole though, that’s what it seems like anyway. He was the bully in “My Bodyguard.” He was the rebel Dally in the Outsiders and he was a racist cop in Crash. Now I know he doesn’t play that role in every movie he’s in but in his more “famous” roles he always plays that type of character

His aesthetic lends to the tough guy even though he's successfully played comedic roles like in "There's Something about Mary". Then he goes back & plays a serial killer. He has tremendous skill & range.

I have only seen maybe a half dozen of his other movies but I'm just a few years younger than him so I've known who he is since I was 13 or whatever. But I look at him here and I don't even see him as Matt Dillon. That's gone. He's Jack.

He always plays a “bad character” though. Like you said he played the bully in My Bodyguard and he was the rebel Dally in the Outsiders and he played the racist cop in Crash. I know that he doesn’t play that type of character in his less famous roles like Wild Things, One Night at McCool’s, There’s Something About Mary etc. but those were his less famous parts

Drugstore Cowboy is quite an advertisement for opiates. It begins like it ends, but the celebration of scoring drugs seems like so much more of a focus than Bob/Matt's character's redemption which is short lived and his optimism at the end is knowing that he will have access to painkillers as a result of getting his ass kicked. It is a beautiful film visually, but as a statement on dope it is misguided. Never do you see a character in dope sickness/withdrawal. We get that in Basketball Diaries and Ed Wood but both fail to truly make the point. I love how Larry Clark's book Tulsa inspired the black and white feel of Drugstore Cowboy, and Matt would have experience with Tulsa and black and white when he shot Rumble Fish there. Alfonso Cuaron made a black and white film in color as well, that being Great Expectations, both GE and DC use a monochromatic green scale. I'd like to see that mash-up of editing.

He did a movie called Headfull of Honey with Nick Nolte. Nick plays his dad who has Alzheimer's. Great movie and Nick is so funny in it!

Absolutely love Over The Edge from 1979. I lived in Aurora, Colorado for a while as a kid, and realized I had ridden my bike passed many of the filming locations:) Good times:) it’s really really a built up Denver Suburb now, but back then it was all track housing and prairie:)
