I feel bad for Matt Hughes. I think a lot of the Personal stuff gets blown out of the Water past what it really was. It's never okay to lay hands on a Woman, but from what I understand that only occurred after the TBI and his fight career was over. When you start playing with TBI all kinds of things go sideways in your brain chemistry. The guy was a Legend, and a bunch of Modern Soy Boys on the Internet wanted to cast judgement on a personality they view as their arch nemesis because he was the kind of guy they could never be, a gritty fighter that would go down in History as one of the best.

@@rcmunro22. Did you not understand what his life was about. First off he utterly hated his identical twin brother. You have to be a real POS person to be that way. Secondly, it was well documented that he used to torture animals. True sociopathic tendencies. Thirdly, he used to go around his college town and bully and torture weaker people for a laugh. Only sociopath do that. Lastly he beat the shht out of his wife. And if you think that only happened post crash, you are insane. Yes Matt Hughes was dominant in the early stages of the UFC. But fact is Matt Hughes is/was and always will be a disgraceful and disgusting human being.

TBIs are very serious and require special accommodation for treatment, medications and long-term care. While there can be bouts of anger and violence, TBI patients are also victims of the resulting injuries. They don't want or choose to hurt their families and friends. My condolences and respect goes out to the Hughes family. Never stop being the best man that you can, Matt. Speedy recovery.

Matt is and always will be a hero of mine. Matt and Brock Lesnar inspired me to start wrestling as a 240lb 13-year-old 7th grader. By the start of 8th grade, I was 190lbs with abs and biceps veins. @Jay Pat that doesn’t make a lot of sense. Not saying you’re wrong or anything but it just doesn’t make sense in the aspect of boxing and cte brain injuries. These guys not only get punched in the head as boxers do, but they also get kicked in the head, dropped on their head, and slammed. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that mma fighters take more damage to their punkins than boxers. And to think mma is less dangerous than boxing is just ludicrous. No one needs to be put under a microscope to see that.

A "Traumatic Brain Injury" can change a person's behavior without they even be aware of. It's impredictable the way that a person can act after a TBI injury, it can disable a person permanently. The quality of life may improve somehow but the damage is done. It's highly probable that Mr. Hughes was never shown any violent sign inside his family circle untill after the accident. He was one hell of a good fighter in the UFC.

I deal w/ TBI from being blown up overseas. It changes you, and not always for the better. I had to walk away from martial arts after almost 30 years, which only added to the depression. Mood regulation, sleep issues, body changes due to messed up hormone levels, no short term memory… It’s no fun, and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. I can’t say I was always the biggest fan of Hughes, but I am absolutely rooting for him now. A country boy can survive.

Well executed biography about a complicated and polarizing figure. Thank you for (mostly) not glossing over the ugly parts but also not making it the main focus of your production. We are all human, and we've all committed unspeakable acts - at least by the time we're middle-aged. There is redemption, but not for everyone. Some of us get hit by trains and experience traumatic brain injuries - the after-effects can change us completely and scramble our realities, making redemption that much harder to find. God bless Matt Hughes and all of the broken birdies among us.

But I have to be completely honest it seems like he got abusive due to the wreck and the brain injury I have heard so many people get violent with family after brain injuries or brain tumors

The lower cerebellum controls anxiety, panic, feelings, your heart rate, and many other things. So, something like this done to his brain might have completely changed how his mind works. A lot of people have no clue what an injury to the brain can do. I have been flοxed, which causes injury to the lower brain. His injury is several times worse. I take several supplements to counteract what it caused. So I can't imagine what's going on in his head. Most people do not realize just how much your brain controls. They assume it only is for "thinking".

@@Godrules That is pretty wild man. I appreciate you commenting that because I have really bad PVC's and palpitations in my heart and the palpitations didn't start until I started getting the arryithmias in 2020. I wonder if my anxiety gives me the palpitations since all that shit is irrelevant in the same part of the brain. It even feels like subconsciously It happens. I had a year when i first got them i was terrified of dying and went through 3 Dr who I just felt like couldn't help me but this last one did and now I feel better but I still get the palps.

Exactly. I understand her leaving and taking the kids if there was a legitimate threat to their well being. You can't raise your kids around DV, not if you have any kind of love for them. If there wasn't a legit threat though, then his wife did him wrong because this is part of the "for better or worse...in sickness and in health" oath she took. No matter how humble and polite a person may be, TBI's can change any, or every, aspect of who you are as a person. The ability to handle stress and control anger/aggression is certainly one aspect that is most often negatively affected. We can only pray for them.

One of the classiest moments I have ever seen- across all sports, was when Matt Hughes clearly stated that GSP was just simply a better fighter than he was and that he couldn’t beat him. As happens so often with so many people in sports, they will come up with excuses for why the other person beat them. Matt Hughes refused to do this- said that he trained as hard as he could, was injury free, was fully prepared; it’s just that GSP was a better fighter. As far as I’m concerned, he was truly humbled and showed incredible strength of character in that moment. As for his personal life, I will leave that up to Matt Hughes and his family and friends to figure out. Regardless, I hope that whatever issues he and his family have can be worked through and that Matt and his family are able to live the best lives they can given the circumstances and are able to overcome whatever obstacles are in the way of that happening.

I never liked Matt Hughes, personality wise. He seemed arrogant, and took pleasure in bullying people, and this was by his own admission in his book. With that said, he is a legend of the sport, and nobody can take away his accomplishments. Given the accident he was in, it's hard to know whether or not the resulting TBI was a direct cause of his domestic battery issues after that. I'm not excusing that behavior, but there is no doubt that severe head trauma can dramatically alter a person's behavior, personality, and impulse control. I think this documentary does a good job of showing his successes without directly condemning his failures.
