90% of people never regain consciousness after a diffuse axonal injury (DAI). Matt suffered a grade 3 DAI, which is the most severe form of this type of brain injury. The fact that he’s able to walk and talk shows how much willpower and heart this man has.

Yeah that last line hit me. I’m not gonna lie I’ve thought about it a lot when I was having to work and pay rent and be broke all the time. I thought it would never end. But the one thing that I feel why I never went through with it. Is because all of my siblings. I’m the oldest of 4 And I know if I killed myself. That would be the most selfish thing ever. Especially for someone who was practically paying for everything in the family

Also, if you're such an avid fan, starting your unnecessary argument with "39-4 or something" diminishes your status as a "true fan" of Matt Hughes. Dang that last bit hurt my soul when he said he thinks about suicide. He has came a long way and fought hard. It's amazing he is alive much less walking and talking. But I do understand the depression, after my surgeries I was paralyzed for almost 2 years and it's mentally draining to fight with the attitude of ill walk it off but then realize this is the new reality. Please keep fighting 🙏

This message is for you Matt. I never knew that happened to you. I remember watching you in the ring, and now, seeing you the way you are, There really no words. But I will say this. When I was younger, crap, I'm gonna be 49 in just a couple weeks. But anyway, I digress. When I was younger, I was pushed off of a 60' cliff out here in Pueblo. I broke my back, my neck..was pronounced clinically dead 3 times, all the real FUN stuff. Also, I was in a coma for quite a while, about a month. I still have issues today, just a little. But mainly my memory is kind of phucked. But dammit, and I will tell you this same thing because I have gone through what you are going through right now. I don't give a shit what anyone says, and neither should you. The absolute most important thing that YOU can do for YOU, is to never give up. I guarantee it is not going to be easy, but if anyone can be an advocate, a living positive light, it's you. I don't want this to be a super-long comment, and I truly hope this message gets to you. But now is the time when you need to look within yourself and you find that fire inside you. No matter what path you may find yourself on, no matter the direction YOU decide to go, the three most important words I want to leave you with, and while looking in the mirror, repeat these words aloud to yourself.. "NEVER give up!"

Matt Hughes has lost a lot of fights in his days in the octagon but this fight of a 19 day coma has made him a Champion by far that no other person could match. What a remarkable comeback from what the experts has told what the outcome was to be. I loved watching him fight and knowing when the fight got tuff he wouldn’t give up.

@@warrenmichael918 Your opinion is that he doesnt think he deserves to live? Wow that's pretty insulting to him. I disagree completely with your assessment. I'm responding to those saying he seems "normal" and "remarkably recovered". He's not recovered or normal in any way. He is clearly in a tremendous amount of both mental and psychological torment. Physical too. The suffering must be unimaginable. To understand the extent of your injuries but not be able to do anything about them? It's like Stephen Hawking but at least he was a genius. It's like Christopher Reeve but at least he could think clearly and his brain functioned normally. He wants to die because he is in a prison and the prison is his mind. Hughes is just aware enough to understand his limitations and it is driving him insane. Just horrible. Don't sugar coat it at his expense because the reality is too much for you to bear personally. One of the most emotional and powerful videos to come out of this ordeal he went through. His words hit deep. Damn I’m touched.

Never knew this happened to Matt. Man I'm so sorry. Was a big GSP fan and Matt was always a formidable opponent. Over anyone else in those days Matt was always the biggest threat to GSP. My heart goes out to you. I also had a huge brain injury when I was younger and by the grace of God made a full recovery. My doctor said I was one in 100 million to have recovered so well and has never really hit home until watching this. I wish you the best life can bring you Matt and may the good Lord pave your future. Much respect to a true warrior and fellow American.

I feel so broken after seeing this video, because I've never seen someone care so much about what others might do, because of his own actions. This man is truly a miracle.
