okay hear me out, ive been breaking this song down for days and heres my interpretation of it: the first verse is in the perspective of matt. he's saying that mr. rattlebone makes him feel better while also harming him physically. he brings him peace while also destroying him. the chorus is saying that mr. rattlebone(a personification of his addiction since being on drugs makes you emaciated) haunts him and has seen his darkest moments. the second verse is in the perspective of mr. rattlebone and is saying that hes now going to take over matts life and be a burden on him but at the same time put his pain at ease. the outro says "i am the driver" as in "i am in control." "i am the shadow" as in "i am the darkness that constantly follows you." "i am the hearse" as in "i control when/where/how you die." it can be argued that as the outro goes on it shifts from mr. rattlebone speaking to matt speaking, but thats fully debatable.

@@linalea04 only comment I have, apart from this being amazing, is that I do think the ending shifts from Mr. Rattlebones to Matt, as you can faintly hear it change from "I am the hearse" to "I'm in the hearse". Then the very last line is both Rattle and Matt, in my mind, singing together

I hate when I fall asleep to early and wake up in the middle of the night. I hate waking up in general if I don't have an immediate objective or something to distract me. I always can't help but think about everyone and everything I've lost throughout time and all the amazing memories I share with people I'll never see again. My heart hurts, I feel like I'm losing myself even though I never knew who that was to begin with. The only way to cope is blasting my playlist with a stiff drink and strong joint and even then it just hits harder once that runs out and I realize I'm still in the exact same spot.

I just had an awful day, a bunch of pent up feelings finally exploded out of me. Driving about to this at night, and shouting my heart out to the last minute of the song is a form of emotion and relief I can't even begin to describe. I felt like demonds inside of me were being exorcised with each shout. Thank you for making this song.

Welp. Been almost a year since I posted this. I hope u see this one day when u remember you singing this in the field after everything happened thank you for being my rock during that time. I still miss u every damn day. But I can live without you even tho it isn’t as fun, she liked you. And that’s something to be proud of. Wondering the hospital halls well this is was playing and sitting there holding her cold hands. Shaking in the parking lot crying is all attached to this song but I’m proud of me. Good job king.
