The Island was once covered in lush forest. The trees were cut down to build the supporting structure for the city of Venice. Strong winds (bura) that are common in those parts blew away most of the soil that was protected by the forests. No soil, no regrowth :(. On the other hand, these conditions leave space only for the toughest grass and plants to grow. The sea salt carrying wind covers the grass. The sheep eat the grass. I have never tasted better lamb. Seasoned before slaughter. The cheese that comes from these sheep is also something no Croatian will miss out on buying when on the island.

Hi...Im from Croatia, its funny to me how strange for you are some things here. So the wild animals sign you saw on highway....its a sign for wild animals crossing. Because the road cut off their natural habitat, road builders made them crossing every few kilometars so that animals can go from one side of the road to other. For you its a small tunnel, for animals its a crossing. The tunnel you passed its called Sv. Rok (Saint Rok) and its the secind longest tunnel in croatia. Its goung under mountain Velebit, so you just drove from one side of Velebit to the other. And that mountain is border between continental part of Dalmatia and dalmatian coastside. Its a wild mountain, but also beautiful....and the weather on the two sides of mountain is very different. In winter when we go to Zagreb (capital city), its usualy sunny on this (dalmatian) side of Velebit. And then when we pass tunnel, its snowy and gloomy...for us - its nothing unordinary 😁 P.s. One half of Island of Pag by strong wind pressure washed with sea water. Other half of Island is nice and green and provides enough fruit and veggies for local population.

Those bears on the highway signs... well, those just say "wild animals crossing" and those stone bridges are indeed for wild animals to cross the highway safely ;) They're also referred to as "green bridges". Bear is there just for show, though, not so many bears roam the area nowadays :D

Before Croatia sold its soul and identity to EU, prices weren't very high. Now they are making it hard for many people to visit. I hope you had a chance to eat some "Paski sir". Cheese made on this island. It is extremely good tasting and very unique, as the milk they use in making it comes from free ranging sheep. Grasses and shrubbery they eat give milk/cheese a very distinct taste.
