5 days on a train across Russia to the coldest city on earth, Yakutsk, Yakutia (Sakha Republic). An experience we will never forget, for being both tough, interesting, beautiful & scary in equal measure. Join us as we travel on the trans-siberian railway, east, across Siberia towards the Russian Far East, passing through the cities of Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude and Chita, as well as the beautiful Lake Baikal. Then turn north, on the Yakutsk-Amur line, built on the permafrost, towards Yakutsk, the worlds coldest city, in January!
A long train journey in 3rd class is like watching a constant conveyor belt of people getting on and off, heading both home and to work in various parts of the country. In our opinion, traveling on trains like this is one of the best ways you can travel and although incredibly tough, the landscapes you get to see and the people you get to meet make for memories you will never forget.

There is no way on Earth I could do that. The train is bad enough, but the cold would destroy me. And I like the cold! But cold to me is 0C or maybe -5C. Also, odd question, what is it with Russian trains and drunk guys in the restaurant cars? Seen several vlogs now with the same situations.

being born and raised in rural Alaska in the 70s-80s, riding winter trains to remote places on several occasions, I can FEEL the cold!! LOL The snow squeaks make me a bit homesick, honestly.

@@szfehler All "thanks" to Stalin's concentration camps, where several million men died building roads to the harshest place on Earth 🙄 While in the process, a man would drop dead from cold every other meter and many more innocent ones would lose their limbs to frostbite... All for the sake of reaching the natural resources and diamonds. Now the Russian oligarchs own half of London, live like kings, while the commonfolk of Yakutia and the rest of Russia live like a third world country.

We did the Trans Siberian from Moscow to Beijing in the winter too it was stunning. But we went first class, and it was certainly worth it from what we saw of the carriages like yours, I would have gone crazy with all that noise. From what I remember first class wasn’t that expensive but we had been living in the UK. We then took the trains in China to Shanghai and then Hong Kong before flying home to New Zealand, one of my best travelling memories ever.

At 4:16 you had the honor to see a very rare VL85 electric locomotive on Russian railways, which is operated only on one East Siberian Railway. In jargon, it is called a "Curve Rectifier" because its wheel arrangement and power (until 2000 it was the most powerful serial electric locomotive in the world) greatly affects the railway track.

I am a Siberian myself and I have traveled a bit and lived in Europe, the UK, Canada and the US, but I cannot imagine taking such a trip through the coldest and unfamiliar spaces. What amazes me is that trains out there can run quite happily at those temperatures with Ice and snow, However, here in the U.K. we’re knackered up when there’s a few autumn leaves on the line, or a bit of bloody rain!

Grew up in Canada and winters in my hometown were just like this. Seeing you guys waddle around in your parkas and snow trousers, and hearing the snow crunching and squeaking under your boots brought back a lot of memories from childhood!

Hearing the crunch crunch crunch of the snow when you guys were on the platforms and at the end walking through the city brought back so many memories for me...I grew up in Novosibirsk and the winters there while not as harsh, were still Siberian winters haha. Didn't know how much I missed that sound! And whyyy did you guys not get a kupé on at least one of the train legs 😂 you would have gotten so much more sleep than in the platzcart!

I did this trip in January/February 1993 when I was a young traveller. My journey started in Singapore, through Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and China before travelling to Beijing from where I took a couple of local trains to Vladivostok where I picked up the Trans-Siberian to Moscow. I then took a train to Ostend, aferry to Ramsgate and a train up to London. Travelling in the winter wasn't too wise, particularly when changing trains as it was so cold hanging around on the platform or in unheated waiting rooms. The coldest temperature I experienced was -37c in Irkutsk. I had previously been naive enough to presume 'freezin' was about as low as it got. I was wrong.

I was spellbound watching this - the ice on Matt's eyelashes, the drive across the frozen river, what it was like to be on the train for 5 days. It constantly impresses me the extent of human ingenuity and truly, it is just a stroke of luck that everything worked and nothing broke down, it is the tightrope between comfort and literal survival! What I wonder is how could Yakutsk ever get built - the weather seems like it is never any less forbidding! I cannot thank you enough for taking us along. You are widening my world with each video and I appreciate you two so much!

20 years back, I took the train from Barnaul to Kazan with my Russian wife. We went "cabin class" and had a very comfortable sleeping cabin. My recollection of the toilet was less than pleasant - after a couple of hours it was awash!. I wanted to try travelling like a Russian kalhusnik and we took a small o/n trip, I think it was Izhevsk to Moscow and that was really different! Overall though, I enjoyed the experience and would do it all again.

I recognize the sound of the snow in this video! Vanderhoof, BC. December, 1971, walking home from a Christmas party at -52 farenheit. The snow made the exact same squeaking noise. So funny it made us laugh. Squeak. Squeak. Squeak. Squeak. Bad Idea to laugh, though. There's a huge danger of freezing your lungs if you pull air in too quickly at -52. Likely I can't get away with tellling the funniest part of the story, though. Stopping for a P in a snowbank. Instant, 2' long icicle! Driving off the next morning nearly shook our teeth out. The car's tires had frozen in an eliptical shape. NOT round any more, and every revolution of the wheels shook the car like a jackhammer.

Was in St Petersburg and Moscow January 2019 and loved every minute especially St. Petersburg…..went to Bettles in Alaska this January and the Temperature was -20…bloody cold. I would love to do the Trans Siberian train trip to Vladivostok….one day! So pleased I found this Julia and Matt. ❤️🇦🇺

As intense it was for you to experience this trip as intense it is to watch. Amazing insight and extreme conditions for you. I can literally hear how cold it is. Snow doesn't "crunch" under your feet unless the compression of of your weight doesn't melt it. It takes REAL cold to do that. Reminds me of growing up in Wisconsin in the USA. It gets cold there too.

The sound of the footsteps on crunching snow is wonderful. That sound and nose hairs sticking together is how you know it is really cold. Takes me back to my childhood in Michigan.

I agree completely! It would have been an adventure years ago, but now way too late to make this kind of a trip. But Siberia is one place I always dreamed of going to see for myself. I watched several videos on the winters in Yakutsk. Don't think I could handle it even for a 5 minute walk. You two really make interesting videos. As far as the train ride goes, I think using the toilet would be the most challenging part of the trip. I remember having to use public toilets in Japan and China. The worst was in Beijing in the late 90's. I literally had to pull my T-shirt over my nose to make it through the ordeal for a Number 1. Can't imagine if it had to be a Number 2. The smell was just like the elephant cage at the zoo, but only 10 times stronger.

@@phillipproussier3723 Molecular genetics and bioinformatics to be exact. I study the genes that are responsible for tissue formation from early organoids. Just see it this way; how is it possible that a single cell can turn into a full human (or animal) with complex tissues. What genes are turning on/off during development? By understanding these genes from a molecular level maybe one day we can generate full functional organs in-vitro and fundamentally understand the formation of organs from single cells. Interesting isn’t it? 🙂 (And don’t worry about vaccines, they do more good than harm. They can have side-effect depending on the medical condition of the patient, but the chances are very slim. After all, the point of a vaccine is to give the patient an inactivated virus that mimics the real one. But even the inactivated virus (particles) can sometimes heavily boost the immune system to point that the patient shows heavy reactions as if it received the real one (their body temperature increases due to their own hyperactive immune system). If the patient already has some medical conditions, their own hyperactive immunity can occasionally do them more harm than good. But in such case, the real virus will still do them more harm.

What a journey, I was spellbound! 🙄 Beautiful views from the train though, fascinating for me living in a warm country and never experience snowy landscapes. Your extended trek to visit the dining cart was hilarious! Your companions obviously had their own recipe to combat the boredom and cold; bunch of interesting characters indeed. That first glimpse of Yakutsk looked unreal; like a human colony on an alien ice planet... Scary to watch you drive in a bus across the river, makes my stomach turn! 😩 Looking forward to the Yakutsk videos, lots of love to both of you and keep warm! ❤️❤️

The snow crunch reminds me of a 3y assigmnent in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Imagine temperatures around -40 degree C in winter combined with one of the worst air polution from coal burning. But I loved Mongolia, a very unique country

I have only recently discovered your channel, but have been really enjoying watching your videos. Such a different way of life, I have never experienced anything below zero Celsius, having lived in Africa all my life! Amazing. It’s going to be a fairly hot 35 degrees today, where I live in South Africa and I cannot imagine how cold minus 35 is! Great videos, thanks.

In February, 1996, my wife and I saw we could get a cheap flight to San Francisco from Louisville. We took a shot at it and quickly learned why the flights were so cheap. We landed in Minnesota and the temp was 60 below zero. We had a 3 hour layover and took some time to exit through the doors just to see what it was like at that temp. All in all it was a great trip and my first visit to Point Reyes, CA. One of my favorite places. As to Yakutsk, It must be near the entrance to Beringia where humans first traveled as long as 30k years ago. Finally, crossing the land mass that existed at that time and entering North America some 16,500 years ago. So, when you think how difficult the circumstance were for Julia and Matt, just think about what life was like in those days. Hunter gatherers who had to sustain themselves every day or die. Another thing that struck me, the travelers who made the journey with Matt and Julia represented a melting pot of people. You could see on their faces, something different brought to the country from each. Very nice video. Thanks.

R O C R O C From Yakutsk to the Bering Strait is almost 3 thousand kilometers in a straight line ;-)) According to our Siberian ideas, this is, yes, almost close.

@@Siberian_Bear72 - That would be about 1,800 miles in 20,000 years time. I presume those were hunter gatherers who entered the area and were blocked by glaciation that filled what is now the Bering Sea and much of Siberia until a pathway finally cleared into N. America. Where I live in NE, Ohio, my property was covered by a mile high glacier beginning 23,000 years ago. By 8,500 years the glacier was gone and left in part what became the Cuyahoga Valley. It was through that valley some Indians traveled and began to populate what is now our Southern states. Forebears to those Indians probably came through Yakutsk. And some of those may have come from China. Others came down the Western coast and ended up in South America. It is a small world:-)

We had an amazing experience in this Trans Siberian train . We booked in the 2nd class individual cabins ..and had a nice homely atmosphere. As Indians, We love traveling by train !!!

This was a really outstanding video. I watched it twice, I enjoyed it so much. I will watch a third time, for sure. I have taken trains in Russia, both with my wife and TDY, but my last visit was long ago, in 2007. I was in Novasibirsk once for TDY. The temperature was -30. I visited Vector, in the science city. Another time I was in Tomsk. That was in the summer. The university that we were visiting gave me a T-shirt, which I still have.

Our winter weather is like Jamaica compared to Yakutsk. I don't know if you are insane or extremely adventurous! You would have to be a hearty soul the live there year-round but it was an experience to remember. Matt and Julia, all the best!
