Comparing DeBoer to Lanning...never had an unlimited bank account to buy players with but went 3-0 against Lanning. Went 2-0 against Sarkasisan. Went 2-0 against Riley. Look at his overall coaching record and what he did every place he coached. This is a great hire. Only question is can he recruit elite prosepects since he's won with what many considered average recruits by developing them. Other than that as far as coaching he's damn good at it...and think about this he had guts enoough to follow Saban ...many don't.

As long as he hires a good staff that can recruit well then the blue chipper players will come because they want to play for a proven winner and get developed for the league. He might not have the #1 or #2 class every year but as long as he constantly recruits in the Top 10 and continues using the portal well then he can develop them into a powerhouse SEC program. It's unrealistic to win a Natty ever other year for a 15 year period like Saban did.
@danz11826 ай бұрын
He's a great coach, but to be elite in the SEC you have to be a great recruiter too. Lanning is a great recruiter. DeBoer is not from the southeast and has not established a reputation as a great recruiter. No disrespect to @roris5882 here, but the head coach MUST be a great recruiter. Couple of quick notes on Kalen DeBoer... His RB coach Lee Marks... Was told earlier this week (before Saban retired) by a family member that the best presentation he's ever seen at an AFCA convention was done by Marks. And that's out of 100's of presentations including many by major HC's. He talked about how impressive he was and felt he was a future star as a head coach down the road. His WR coach JaMarcus Shephard... This guy was in the mix to be hired by Saban as the new WR coach to replace Wiggins. That alone should give you a good idea of his abilities. His OL coach Scott Huff... Another well respected coach. His guys won the Joe Moore Award this past season. Not sure he's better than Wolford, but you don't win that award (voted on by former OL players, not limp wristed journalists) without having a good grasp of what you're doing. His offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb... Again, Saban wanted him. Last year, Saban interviewed him but Bama ended up with Rees. Grubb has been at DeBoer's side since 2007. He's expected to stay there and follow DeBoar to Tuscaloosa. IMO, he will be a top 3 SEC OC. I want to wait and see what transpires with the defensive staff. I think we will see a mixture of the old staff and his guys. Maybe a guy like Joe Cox gets retained too. There will be decisions to make with support staff too, but I'm not concerned with those. On DeBoer... He's a game planner on the level of Sark, but unlike Sark, he's more genuine and has been a winner at every stop. He's an X's & O's schemer on the level of Kiffin, but unlike Kiffin, he's not a petulant child and he actually shows up and wins big games. He exploits and attacks weaknesses. He motivates. His players love him. The media will love him (in terms of access). I think the fans will love him (obviously winning is important). There's going to be a learning curve, but he's lucky to have a great support system around him to help with the adjustment to both Alabama and the SEC. And to be able to pick up the phone and bounce ideas or questions off Nick Saban? There's not a coach out there worth a damn who doesn't wish he had that direct line. Hell, Saban's old assisistas still call on him for advice and guidance, why would DeBoer? If it was me? He'd have open access to film review like Saban gave Mal Moore on Sunday mornings. He'd be a presence in on campus recruiting, in camps, etc. Saban isn't going to be around 24/7, but as long as he's willing to be around some, I'd use it to my advantage. But, DeBoer ultimately has to do what he feels comfortable with. And while none of the above guarantees success for him at Alabama, I think there's a few good data points in his favor... and there's reason to be really optimistic and happy with this hire.

As a recent Roll Tide supporter I always tell people at work underestimate Alabama and you'll pay. I could careless about their record. I can't believe this legacy will die. As a Husky fan and UW student, I am absolutely gutted by DeBoer leaving. Our program nearly collapsed after Petersen retired, and in only two seasons, DeBoer rebuilt Washington into a national championship contender and gave us the greatest season of UW football I can remember. It honestly felt like he built a winning foundation at Washington that could turn into a 10+ years of football success if he stayed with the team. Now all of that hope and optimism for Husky football is gone, topped off with the sting of losing in the National Championship Game just four days ago. While being able to understand why DeBoer would leave for one of (if not) the most attractive coaching jobs in college football, it's hard not to feel backstabbed by his decision. Especially after his comments last week about committing long term to Washington since his daughter committed to play software ball here, then pulling a 180 and leaving as soon as the Alabama job opened. We found a diamond in the rough with DeBoer, and he was poached by a bigger program, which was a repeat of when Sark left UW for USC in the 2000s. And what's preventing this happening to any other coach we hire? I hope Alabama fans really, and I mean really, appreciate this hire because DeBoer saved Washington football and with him leaving goes the optism for UW football of 40,000+ students and millions of Washingtonians. There's a good chance our football program is in the gutter for several years and probably won't be close to where we were this season for longer than that.

Kalen DeBoer has been a winner everywhere he’s been a head coach and I don’t see any reason why he can’t continue that with the resources available to him at Alabama. The DC hire will be important but the offense is in good hands with DeBoer and if Saban is still even somewhat involved I’m sure the defense will be good too.

Saben isn't going to be around after the transition.

As an LSU fan, you are probably one of the best on KZfaq regardless of the team you go for lol, I have all the respect for Alabama and nick saban, he put us on the map and then put us in misery for 15 years. Not sure about the new coach tho.

Growing up in Illinois two private schools Joliet Catholic, Mount Carmel in Chicago, than publics like Naperville-North, Wheaton-Warrenville and recently Cary-Grove were very good teams. But when i lived in the South they can't compare to the layers of talent down there. It's just facts. I was shocked at seeing dedicated athletes, strong as bulls too not in a Division 1 schools. I know Matt you are a great athlete for sure it's in the culture point blank.

Are you feeling bad because Saban is gone? That's fair. Does this hire feel like a downgrade compared to 🐐? Yes, comparing whole Saban's career to current DeBoer record has a huge gap. Is this man going to be failure/disappointment? No. The guy has done a lot through his career and one thing he excels is passing game which is a hire needed specially for Jalen Milroe because he can work with him and turn his raw talent into elite talent. Expect an explosive offense.
@seanslattery63666 ай бұрын
Milroe Will never be a great passer / reader of defense ? You dont think he had great coaching already ? If this coach Is any good the first thing he does Is get a qb that make quick decisions AND good throws even if not as fast running as milroe . Bama doimg milroe a diservice at qb as he Will never cut it in NFL . Better chance playing an Athletic position.
@absalonpedraza13396 ай бұрын
@@seanslattery6366 if you're saying Tommy Rees develop him into an elite QB then you're delusional. Compared to DeBoer, Rees had actually downgraded the Alabama's standard.
@DiamondPaintWithDiamondDave6 ай бұрын
@@seanslattery6366 If he keeps Milroe at starter this year, and brings his own assistants with him, by week 1 Milroe will look like a different QB. I envision Milroe as the Heisman favorite, and probably winner this year, and you'll be hearing a lot of comparisons to Lamar Jackson. Sounds like you and I have been viewing Milroe with different sets of lenses for sure,. He's shown flashes of greatness this past season. Times where he's shown what hes capable of, just not consistently. When Jackson came to the Ravens he was about the same as Milroe was this past season, and since then he's become quite a good pocket passer, and dangerous on the ground as well. Milroe is actually developing faster than Lamar. TBH, Milroe was also at a disadvantage most of this past season as well. Our O-line couldnt consistently hold long enough for him to really make a good read. The times they did hold, he made spectacular throws. With what appears to be a really good offensive coach coming in, Milroe is gonna shine!

Rush hire to try to right the ship. Tommy Rees as interim would have made more sense, IMO, especially considering Saban saying he was kinda still gonna be around.

Exactly, you’ve been having it eazy with Saban for so long now you’re going to have to work for your wins

Looks to be a good hire/solid. Saban staying on as a consultant I think there will be some of that coaching/game planning mentoring as well which may have been part of the agreement. I believe that Kalen Deboer would be open to a process like that. I am not stating that he won't be able to do his core approach but I think there is an agreement to incorporate some of the structure that is in Saban's approach. Of course this is speculation due to Saban keeping an office there and being a consultant. May very well be a super hire but only time will tell.

I have not seen a comment about what talent could follow Deboer to Alabama. I haven't seen anyone comment that he beat Texas with the talent he had. This team this past season was not the best, but they had grown the most under Nick Saban. I think that is why he was so proud of this group of guys. You know the transfer portal will open for Washington for 30 days, some will start the paperwork now like Bond. Bond could change his mind.
