As a high school teacher, I see students whip themselves into a frenzy over new phones each year. They sometimes look horrified when they find out that I, their digital media teacher, only upgrade every 3 years or so (which seems to be a good timeframe).

Upgrading every year is just ridiculous. The longest I've ever kept a phone was 3 years and that was because I loved that phone 😁 (samsung note 3, skipped the note 4 and got the note 5) now I have the note 8. I'm with you on the 3 year thing!
@snufte
@snufte 5 жыл бұрын
The only reason I change phone every 3 years is because the phone I last had was being slowed down by the manufacturer(or that the apps I use requires more power) and not being able to use the phone for a full day even if I changed the battery. I had the note 2, then switched to note 4 when it was out for a year or so. It got slow and started dying last year, so I changed again (after 3 years). My job pay for my phones, and now I could only choose the Huawei p20. I am happy enough with it that I can have it for at least 3 years. And by being frugal, i dont want to spend 1000 dollars (?) on a new note 9 just because my job "only" pay for a p20.

I think 3 years is great these days . I started with the iPhone 3 , then 4 , then 5 but I was always one of the last people to get these models .. then I got the new 6plus new . Hated how big it was then after a year of dropping and repairing it , switched to the smaller 6 . Just before the new iPhones came out last year I got the X on a killer plan ! Retired the 6 and now I’ll be rocking this one for at least 3 years . It’s a great way of rotating , 3yeargate for the win !

I still have a flip phone. One time my phone rang in an elevator. I pulled it out, and all of the women in the elevator laughed and shrieked: "Oh, look! That's so cuuuuuuute!" As you get older, you learn the games that companies play to keep you buying, you understand the idiocy of mindless consumerism, and you're perfectly happy to not play the game. I actually have a game that I play with myself where I count how many AirPods I see in one school day and once it was like 8, and these kids don’t even pay for them themselves. Honestly I’m fine with kids buying tech as long as they paid for it with their own money that they worked to save up for and that they actually care about what they are buying. I'm still using my iphone 6s plus that I got in 2016 as well. It has no cracks even though I drop it occasionally without a screen protector, it still runs smoothly for me besides a few odd things once in a blue moon, and none of the more recent iphones have had upgrades that made feel the need to leave behind my perfectly good (and very much enjoyable) phone just yet. honestly the 6 is the best iphone I've ever had. I'm kinda conditioned to only use apple since they are the only phones I've had for nearly 10 years now, but I have no intention of getting rid of this phone until it becomes too frustrating for me to carry on. being an upgrade sheep must be exhausting. and very expensive.

@@fpl_bailey oh man I loved the LG V20 but I had enough restarts when using the stock camera app to finally get tired enough to upgrade to the V30. I miss the option to remove the battery but unlike the V10 before which I also had, I rarely if ever needed to swap out the battery. I had a 6,400mAh battery extender for a while so I would just use that on super long days and vacations when I knew I'd be using the camera alot but that's about it. One thing I absolutely miss though is the IR blaster. Other than that, the V30 has been a beast in ever way over the V20. Battery life is so sweet. The V40 was too large with a not so big battery and power hungry SD845 so I chose the V30 over that. The V20 is one of the last of the everything phones though.

A tip: Always buy last years' flagship. I think the same can be applied for laptops too. If its good enough for last year,it should be good enough this year
@tobiasjansen229

I know your comment is kinda old, but my opinion on this is: If your intention is to upgrade your device after a few years, buying an old device reduces the time you might use the device for by a significant amount. Given you want to upgrade your device once the used technology gets three years old, you would be using the last years' flagship for max. 2 years. So I personally prefer to buy latest technology which in this case could be used for 3 instead of 2 years. Which leads to less, but also more expensive upgrades. This is much better from an ecological standpoint - and you need to spend less time on buying, installing and getting used to new hardware. But this is a personal preference.

@@tobiasjansen229 while I slightly agree with you but in a practical sense there isn't much difference between a 2019 MacBook and a 2020 MacBook or 2021 MacBook. All three have similar levels of durability and they'll all get software updates from Apple. As long as the laptop (or phone) you buy has good specs you'll be fine
@tobiasjansen229
@tobiasjansen229 3 жыл бұрын
@@wilcoxtam810 Yes, you are right. This of course depends on the item you are buying. E.g. if you are buying a last gen TV, which has like a lifespan of maybe 7 years, this makes absolutely sense. Especially because last gen TVs usually are significantly cheaper than latest tech. But in case of MacBooks last gen devices are only slightly cheaper than latest devices. And especially right now we are seeing new devices with significant changes (M1), so buying a last gen MacBook right now wouldn't be the best option in my opinion. But yes, in general you are right: going for last gen makes totally sense in many cases. But it really depends on the specific devices you want to buy.

op is correct. Buy flagships from 1 or even 3 years ago. I have an S8 and if it breaks -- I'm buying another S8. The upgrades in future Galaxies are so MINIMAL (some cases even steps backwards) and you pay SO much more for having the newest. Supply and demand -- idiots always have to have the newest, so enjoy the HUGE savings on slightly less new things.

I feel bad for watching this on an upgraded phone now 😟 In all honesty, my old phone died an honourable death, after 7 years of service and 3 replacement batteries. I try to follow similar rules when it comes to buying things, especially clothing. "Function over form" has been my clothing rule for years, and it's saved me a lot of money. I see people spend hundreds, if not thousands, on a pair of limited edition trainers that they will probably never wear, and think to myself.. "you could've kept that for food shopping, or taking the family out for a long weekend away." Saving money from not upgrading your tech will give you the chance to spend money on a well deserved holiday, upgrading your levels of happiness and satisfaction.

Every 3 years is my rule unless there are serious issues with the current one. If you flat out purchase it you are paying ~$260 every year to own your phone. Which in the grand scheme of things, isn't that much considering how many hours you use it on a weekly basis (10-15)

Something that I've recently started to do is to not buy phones on plans: they get you stuck in a contract for two years and as soon as you're done, at least for me, there's the thought "oh, I'm done now! might as well get a new phone". Plus, it distances me a bit from the actual price of the phone as you're paying a good bulk of the cost over time vs. upfront. My next phone therefore is going to be unlocked, refurbished and at least one year or older. I'll save money on the phone, not get locked to a contract and will only pick the thing up if I can afford to buy the phone in its entirety.

This is exactly the mentality that most people need to have! I try to apply it to most of my purchases, my laptop and phone included. Something that has been a little harder is my gear because I get excited about upgrading it and wanting to make better content. But this idea can literally even be applied to groceries except not in an upgrade way. The store version of something is not going to be much different from the name brand and can sometimes be a good bit cheaper. So anytime I find something that meets this criterion, I try to "downgrade."

Just make sure that the actual quality of the food (and packaging!) is okay tho! I was sick a while ago and had to go purchase soups and yoghurts 'cus that's all i could eat. There was only this low-budget food store open so i had to buy it there. The products tasted okay (except there was literally no meat in my meat soup hahah), but i looked at the yoghurt box and it freaking contained aluminium. That would never happen in a "normal" budget store and with my countrys regulations. This yoghurt was from abroad. So be aware. If it's really cheap, it's probably too good to be true! (Just like wish products btw)

Yeah, but your car most likely costs more in taxes, maintenance and fuel than a more modern, cleaner and efficient car. Your phone probably lags depending on what applications you want to run, plus you've got a tiny screen that isn't as vibrant as a newer model. Your laptop is probably a little slow to load stuff, but assuming you are just using the internet and word then it's fine. If you were to play video games or do anything intense like video editing, cad and cam then your laptop is going to take donkeys years to process it.

lol, I'm 18 and I've never owned a smartphone in my life. Yes, I have a flip phone. People laugh and think I'm poor, but I still don't give a shit. I have more money than most of my peers because A- I earn it, and then I pay for my own stuff, (not my parents.) and B- I save money and value experiences with friends, rather than stuff. And I'm happy. I am not stressed out by social media addictions or constantly cleaning/organising my living space because of owning too much stuff. A simple laptop (that I don't need to upgrade constantly) will do just fine, thanks.

If you're a popular tech KZfaqr (say 50k+ subscribers) a lot of companies will send you product for free or to review. So that's probably the best route. But if that's your job you'll probably need to get a ton of devices to review them. The great thing about tech reviewers is that they buy the products so we don't have to. You could even do give-aways for the products if you don't want to hold onto 20 phones every year.

@Agast Dwipa It's doable, but I haven't had to do it for my iPhone yet. I have replaced the battery on my Macbook Pro, (while also upgrading to an SSD and more RAM). The quality of replacement batteries varies, mine held a good charge for about a year and a half, but now only lasts about 20mins. This is fine for me as I can leave it plugged in, but if you're in school this wouldn't work. Most devices really aren't friendly to battery replacement the way they should be.

i am 23 and using my 3rd phone since december 2016 XD but i am a student and i am not that tech savvy so it is ok for me. the battery lags a bit, like taking 4 hours to charge , but it is ok bc i charge it overnight when i dont use it. apart from that, it is working just fine.

It would be a bit strange if it was worse right?

That's because it is. Apple usually releases its phones in September but most other phones don't get their upgraded components until January, most commonly the snapdragon. So yes apple does have the fastest chips, it's only for a few months.

@@cardboardpackage not true. Other phones actually uses 3x more RAM that uses more battery with their inefficient chipsets than iPhone chipsets so iPhone really has the most powerful chip using only 4gb RAM.

My current phone works great even after two years of using. And I'm planning to upgrade because I got a bit jealous when my friend bought a new phone. Thanks man. You've saved me a thousand bucks.

That’s true. New phones should be produced every 2 years at least. A new phone every year... Think about it that’s ridiculous

That's actually misunderstanding the issue. You are not supposed to buy a new phone every year just because a new model is available but it's great that you can buy the most up to date technology if you're upgrading let's say a 3 year old phone. Many consumer items are refreshed and upgraded yearly - CPUs, TVs etc. , doesn't mean you have to keep up with that.
