"Because I love you you stupid kid. Somebody had to" This reminds me of when you simultaneously love and hate yourself at the same time. You're stuck with yourself, a deeply flawed person who you find weak and sometimes despise. But you also have to be there for yourself because you're all you got.

Yeah hulk hasn’t really had a “great” run except maybe Peter David’s run. Hulk has always been one of my favorite characters bc I felt bad for him as a kid. Immortal is up there w Jason Aaron’s Thor and fractions Hawkeye and hickmans FF as the best marvel books of the modern age

Of all the Superheroes I've encountered when I came back to Canada from Taiwan as a kid, the Hulk spoke to me on a subconscious level while I was still but a child. His emotional world is an allegory of mine when I did my own shadow works in my mid 30's, and it's there where I became aware of the roots of my raging outburst; my repressed sadness from my early childhood trauma of neglect by my ill mother. As an infant, my evolutionary survival mechanism took over and suppressed my emotional expression of sadness, by freezing my crying response altogether so that I won't be detected by others, since my initial encounter with my own mother is one of neglect and indifference. I felt all of that repressed feelings of my sadness all at once, as I genuinely cried for the very first time for myself. Now, almost a decade has passed, and my angry self sounds more like the immortal Devil Hulk, angry yet focused, and capable of explaining exactly what behavior patterns I've observed that I was angry about. The Immortal Hulk series is by far a superior writing when I seen such parallels.

Immortal Hulk is Marvel’s answer to Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing run. Having only read the first 25 issues of the run so far, I can definitely say this is one of Marvel’s best comics of recent years. It really focuses on the body horror and the main focus on the split personality of Bruce and the Hulk alter egos. It makes me sad that the MCU probably won’t explore Bruce Banner’s demons further since Ragnarok. But hey we get a great comic to make up for it. Another great video Matt.

It’s super interesting that this more-perfect system of alters has physically changed the way Joe Fixit represents-and thereby expresses-himself. He’s not the lecherous gangster grey monster he once was, now as the social circle face for how Bruce manages his relationships with those closest to him. Joe has notably taken the role exclusively for Bruce, the act of being human, as a shared task. Joe is now posed as a non-threat, just a chill fun guy who wears Hawaiian shirts. Banner’s more unified system is letting Bruce slowly side with his own negative qualities more while also subconsciously and sub-textually recognizing there needs to be someone likable to latch hold of those human relations. I find it fascinating that since being back at the start of Immortal Hulk, Banner is less and less his core self, putting up even more walls-now all framed as different utility-that hide his weakening connections with what it means to be a person. . Oh and talking directly to cosmic satan who wears eternal underworld storms that build its demon face might also play into things, I guess. 😅

Great analysis! Bruce is definitely receding while all the other personalities are growing stronger and more nuanced. I think what Bruce chooses to do in his core personality is going to affect whether he becomes the world breaker possessed by the One Below All in #25 or push him in a better direction.

Sara Cohle that’s what’s so great about this run. Al has been able to Mature Gray hulk and evolve his character without contradicting any of What Peter David did with him, while also not falling back on the tired enforcer in Las Vegas trope that every other writer uses with Joe. “Mr. Fixit” always felt like an act that Gray hulk was putting on, at least in my view( and his conversation with Samson in the “ incoming” one shot just strengthens that feeling) and it’s refreshing to see him move past it to something more genuine. As for Bruce, I agree with everything you said. It’s so telling that Devil Hulk and Joe are both able to be on good terms and connect with Betty, even in her harpy form, and yet, Bruce can’t talk to her at all or make any headway. He’s the one who doesn’t have social skills and is needy( which Joe points out to him). Not the hulks. And ironically, Bruce is the personality that loves Betty the most. Such good stuff. It’s interesting that all the way back at the end of the first issue, Bruce asked the hulk if he was a bad person. And seeing how things are right now, maybe Bruce IS a bad person. Not from a morality standpoint, but a social one. And I think that’s more harmful and destructive in Bruce’s case.

@@Dhampir101980 Al ewing address many aspects of Bruce's psyche and how his new D.I.D system reflects the changes in not only his alter personalities but the core that is bruce. He may not be a perfect but this series is actually making him evaluate in a sense. I mean Joe and D. Hulk are clear examples of alters that truly reflect aspect Bruce truly lacks in both a social and psychological standpoint. I believe there was a comic storyline about the hulk and banner separating that show what banner would be if he didn't have the hulks as an outlet to his issues, a heartless bastard the needed the hulk to be something while other like Betty, Ross, Rick and even Jen with or without a complete people but Bruce needs the hulk to gain a semblance of self. Ewings run will finally give us the answer of who Bruce is at the core his true self without his alters, is he a good man or a bad own only time will tell

Ricardo Ramos I think you’re referring to the “Hulk Asunder” storyline from Jason Aaron’s run. Overall, I thought it was a mess, just because it undid all of character development that Bruce and Hulk went through with each other during Greg Pak’s run. Although, I will admit that it does pave the way for the depiction of Bruce being even more dangerous without the hulk to vent his anger that Al hinted at during the issue were Bruce talks with Cho at the diner...

To me, this series is the natural continuation to Planet Hulk/ World War Hulk because there was so much speculation, especially in the latter, as to who was in charge during that run. Which personality. I remember the question of is Bruce Banner the Hulk or is the Hulk Bruce Banner. Baby Hulk has no real memories about that time. Vague at best, but Bruce remembers everything. People say that it was “gravage hulk”, to explain that it’s a Hulk of average intelligence, but in the run up to Planet Hulk, this Hulk was sent in to diffuse a bomb. This wasn’t merely a Hulk of average intelligence. This was either Bruce Banner at the helm or Professor Hulk or something else. Either way, I think those experiences forged a personality of its own that they now call Green Scar, which I would say was the “darkest” Hulk we had until now. So, when you look at the path of the personality as well as the powers(Hulk became able to expel gamma bursts first uncontrollably then at will), this really does seem like natural progression. He always had healing power. Now, he can control it. He had the power to expel gamma energy and he always had the ability to absorb gamma energy, but he had no control of the absorption. Now, he does. He’s not really showing a bunch of new and different powers so much as he’s showing maturity and evolution. He doesn’t just become physically stronger now. He becomes better. And it’s an explainable and gradual build up spanning almost 60 years as opposed to something happening overnight.

I always thought that neither had direct control. For the first time maybe ever there was no conflict between Bruce and hulk. They both felt exactly the same and neither were gonna let kicking him off earth and destroying Sakaar slide. If hulk is better suited to a task he did it, so hulk was definitely the main pilot but if something required brains Bruce took over. Hulk even receded to reveal Bruce to strange so he’d get close. Turns out it was 2 man operation and they dewdass tricked him in perfect sync. I could be wrong but that’s how I saw it reading the story for the first time

As far as Universe go, I prefer DC. But as far as stories about troubled and truly demented characters, I go Marvel. I feel that DC doesn't allow a character to have a mental disorder that is as front facing as someone like Moon Knight, Sentry, and Bruce Banner. Most of the characters in DC have these same disorder, but its more of a quirky personality trait rather than something they have to fight every single day. Like, yes, Batman is a broken man, but its rarely ever been something he's struggled with. While someone of equality, Iron Man, has to deal with how broken he is on a daily basis and struggles to keep any semblance of sanity.

In regards to the original comment, I believe this would be due to the natures of the characters and the universes they inhabit. DC has "godlike" characters and tends to do better with exploring large themes, like a god trying to live among men, and the power of courage and will. Marvel has "people" heroes, characters that are more grounded in reality and closer to you and me, and because of that they tend to do better when exploring smaller themes and "normal life" problems like struggling to pay the rent AND be a superhero. DC's characters are more like physical embodiments or manifestations of ideas. Like Batman, for example would be the physical manifestation of justice. Wonder Woman would be Truth. Superman would be hope. Marvel's characters are best when they're "normal people", not these large themes personified. Both companies do good with their respective themes and character explorations, they're just different. Which is good. I wouldn't want both companies trying to do the same thing. But, that's not to say that each company ONLY has characters like one or the other. Batman's descent into depression after having his back broken by Bane, often hallucinating his parents in near death experiences, and worrying about a Robin dying show us glimpses into this broken man who's struggling in his mission. But, they're usually briefer glimpses. I can't imagine DC trying to take one of their major "godlike" characters and trying to do "Demon In A Bottle". Could they? Sure, if it's written well, but it's not really suited to the nature of a DC character or the universe they inhabit. Can you do "Kingdom Come" with Marvel characters? No, '94's Marvels is NOT the same as Kingdom Come. They deal with different themes. But, could they tackle large themes like that? Sure, if it's written well. But, I find something more akin to Spider-Man PS4 to be better suited to Marvel characters (in general).

@@kevrulz06 First off. SHORTEN YOUR EXPLANATION TO 50 WORDS OR LESS!!!!! Second. I completely agree, but at times it's hard for me to identify with a struggle that Superman, Wonder Woman, or Batman might be going through in any given story; though there are some I absolutely enjoy of them. (Trying to get more into Wonder Woman right now.) I guess I just like seeing someone like the Sentry watching the Hulk on TV, as he rampages through New York; knowing he can stop him ALMOST without trouble, but his Agoraphobia (fear of panic and helplessness) keeps him confined to the house.

@@duncan2by4 George Perez's Wonder Woman is probably the best starting point to read WW. I got the first omni, and I'm so glad I did. All other origins for WW are just a poor man's George Perez WW. A good place to see personal struggle would be Mike Grell's Green Arrow. At least The Longbow Hunters miniseries. Oliver struggles with continuing superhero action despite being in his early 40s, wants kids even though Dinah doesn't. Percy's Rebirth Green Arrow tackles his feelings about trying to fight "the man" when he is "the man". Excellent analysis! The more I look into this comic the more I find. I never noticed that you can actually see the green flash that clues Banner into the location of Doctor Frye at the start - it's just disguised as the Hulk's eye in the shot.

@@ravindupadmanath2802 I see that alot too. Immortal Hulk #28 wasn't "woke". It injected current events into it but that doesn't mean it's woke. The whole lot of them are just bummed out pessimists. Heck, they're all fear mongering right now about DC shutting down because Dan Didio left. It's ridiculous. I don't necessarily agree with the side they're against, but I don't agree with them either. I like a good balanced middle ground. And you're right, their fans don't think for themselves. They just regurgitate what they say with little or no thought and attack you for criticising their viewpoints because it doesn't line up with their own(like the people they, themselves are against. Ironic). I feel so much better after unsubscribing from Zach and EVS.

I found that the immortal Hulk series by Al Ewing is astonishing. It feels like there was a lot of similarities between the Swamp Thing run by Alan Moore. Like Al Ewing did take a lesson from that run the kind of really establish a lot of certain key moments to really have such a unique experience while you're reading the immortal Hulk series and also diving in the history of the Hulk from other previous writers and really bringing back a certain elements but really evolving it and progressing it in ways that suits the needs of the story he's trying to tell with this particular version of The Hulk. This has to be one of the defining runs on the Hulk if not the quintessential run on the hulk. It's like you know certain runs just Define that character and it's really much a lot of writers from when this run is going to be completely finished they're going to be very inspired by what he does with the character and try to run for that try to do something of their own thing to try to capture This one is definitely a 10 out of 10 type of run it just really damn good

You really rise to the occasion! Such a rich narrative, of a mature exploration of the possibilities latent in the published history of the Hulk. You must have been deeply excited to make this one. I will watch it again to see if I have incisive replies! My wife will dig it- her replies will be intriguing. You notice how this coloring appears so much more naturally on a TV screen, than comics made for newsprint? I honestly like both- the old stuff could almost use toning down for the screen. We can't help appreciating the craft and its commentary on its times. Granted, this arc was written to have a literary cumulation, but you also make excellent use of the source material. I notice and appreciate your source footnoting in the description. Meticulous! There's two viewers: the adult, utilizing what we've learned to both explore our conceptual tool set and cope with our view of modern life. Then there's the child, filled with wonder, absorbed with the fantastic material and its spark to our imagination. Are we intellectuals? Are we kids? Or Are we both?
