But he didn’t say “buns with only cheese” he said “a cheeseburger with only cheese.” I can see that this isn’t true in France, but where I live it wouldn’t be a burger without the meat. So the inclusion of the patty goes without saying, it’s part of the definition of a cheeseburger

I know cause I had sum customers come up and say Only cheese, I would always ask... just to be clear u want no toppings?... they say yeah no toppings... I also would get guys from India who would ask for a veggie burger which we didn't have so I would say... u can remove any of meat from all burgers and sandwiches or we have Filet O Fish sandwhich... most went w the fish 😂😂😂

@@shadyseneca when you say “something in between it” can it be anything like lunch meat or would it only apply to a “meat patty”? Or is it anything that would go on a burger if the meat was there, but then it could also not be there? We don’t really call it a meat patty. Even if you ate the meat without a bun and put toppings on it (since keto has become popular) we call it a burger bowl. Like the main ingredient in making a burger anything is the meat. Like burger would be anything you put with the meat rather than anything you put with the bun because it’s only called a burger once you put all the ingredients together because the meat patty is what differentiates a burger from a sandwich.

Typically, in most English speaking countries, if someone says something like, "I'll have a double cheeseburger, just cheese", we take it to be short for "the only topping I want is cheese". Happened to me in a taco shop in France when I wanted cheddar cheese on my hachis parmentier tacos. I’m like you don’t even make the goddamn things right and you’re judging me? I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t think to put fries on our tacos earlier. A French taco is nothing like the ones you’d get in america or Mexico. Well no. He ordered "un cheeseburger avec seulement du fromage". So he needs to receive 1) le cheeseburger with 2) only cheese. A bun by itself is not a cheeseburger now is it? Yet he received a bun by itself, with some cheese in it. A burger is a meal, not a bun. If you are eating a bun by itself, are you eating a cheeseburger? No. You are eating a bun. If he wanted cheese in some bread, he could've asked for cheese in a bun (or du fromage dans un pain). But he didn't. He clearly asked for a cheeseburger.

Why? What does a burger consist of to you? Like, the minimum requirement for qualifying as a burger? As an extension, what's the minimum requirement to be called a cheeseburger? Can you remove anything from the burger requirements when making the cheeseburger? The civilized world defines a burger as a patty between two buns. A cheeseburger contains the same, plus cheese. A cheeseburger with just cheese means you want the bare minimum requirements to be a cheeseburger. No condiments, no lettuce, no tomato, no pickles or onions. If you only want cheese in a bun you don't order a burger, you specifically say cheese in a bun.

@@Arthemax 100% otherwise he would have ordered a cheese sandwich. Here's my argument for this if you care to read it... The people who took his order are the ones in error. It's not the way he ordered it. I do think there are some French people who would have made it correctly. A cheese sandwich isn't a "cheeseburger with just the cheese". The issue is that too many vegetarians are ordering their cheese sandwiches wrong, confusing the hell out of the service industry and making them think a burger is anything between two buns when that's probably only true in Japan. A hamburger is very specifically ground meat between two buns, usually beef. Any other meat becomes a sandwich (chicken sandwich, fish sandwich, cheese sandwich) with the exception of veggies burgers which are any vegetarian or vegan items made to either resemble or taste like ground beef. Even In and Out (a popular burger restaurant in CA) has a vegetarian sandwich that is made exactly like their cheeseburgers are, only with no meat. The correct way to place your order, and what it's called on the secret menu is a "cheese sandwich". This isn't an American vs European thing as much as people are trying to argue that it is. It's that their understanding of what a hamburger is is incorrect and it's not due to geographic location. Also, it's not that Americans think everything should be done our way because there are several articles out there explaining what hamburgers are in different parts of the world, and it's almost always ground meat between 2 buns, or something resembling it if they're a mostly vegetarian country. Point being, anybody who would serve this man a cheese sandwich after he ordered a cheeseburger with just the cheese (or only cheese, or any variation therein) would be objectively incorrect. It doesn't matter what country they're in, many people would make this error, but to be precise, it is their error.

The patty is still a core part of the cheeseburger. Pickles, tomato, lettuce, onions and condiments are extra. Unless you specifically ask to not get the patty (or the bun), 'only cheese' means no other extras should be added to the burger besides the cheese. Not that any of the core elements should be removed. If anything, the patty is more central to the burger than the bun, so if it's allowable to remove core parts of the burger without explicit instructions to do so, the bun should go before the patty. Any logic that allows "cheeseburger with only cheese" to be served without a patty would also necessitate that the buns are gone too, and so the order would just be for cheese. But then, why even talk about burgers in your order? Just order cheese. Tl;dr - the workers at that burger joint were mentally challenged.

Ngl, I accidentally did this to someone at my first job at subway. I was 16 and it was like my 3rd shift and this guy rushes into the store locks eyes with me and yells, "I need to use the bathroom! I want a 6inch meatball sub, JUST SAUCE AND CHEESE." And he repeats that he only wants sauce and cheese like 3 or 4 times. Needless to say I was thrown way off guard and in my head it feels wrong but im like he just wants sauce and cheese?!? So I make the sub, no meatballs, just sauce and cheese ring it up and he pays and leaves. It's like 30 mins later and he comes back and i was mortified. We remade him a new sandwich (no cost of course) and after he leaves my manager burst into laughter. I wanna crawl in a hole and die im so embarrassed, and I look at her and go "im so so sorry I thought that was all he wanted." After I explain to her what happened she laughs harder and looks at me and goes, "The funniest part to me is that he ate half his sandwich before realizing there were no meatballs, who does that???"

And at the same time, I never would've assumed he'd order a "MEATBALL" sub without meatballs lol. Literally never. Because if he didn't want the meatballs, ya know, the main part of the sandwich... the part it was named after... He'd say, "I want bread with just sauce and cheese" or "I want a meatball sub with no meatballs, just the sauce and cheese." It'd be a weird order but the communication would be clear. I'd take the chance of being wrong before I'd give that man just cheese and sauce on bread when he asked for a meatball sub with cheese and sauce only. That clearly means no extras beyond those two additional ingredients that AREN'T in the name of the damned sandwich lol. @@LiannaLovelle

As a french canadian, this is absolutely hilarious to me. That "i cant be the only person in paris who's ever wanted SEULEMENT DU FROMAGE" murdered me AHAHAHAHAH Also, it sound like you are saying "only 2 cheeses" because you pronounce "du" as "deux" (prononced a lil like "duh", (2))

@@LunarAngel Nahh he was fine, I can see "seulement deux fromages", but it was in line with his accent so I would have gotten "du fromage".. I think he was golden. You should learn French, it's cool. No it isn't, but it's.. maybe fancy? It's something whatever, learn languages, French is one of them, choose another if you don't like it, but don't go for Navajo if you think French is difficult.

In America a burger always means meat on buns. A lot of people would say “cheeseburger plain,” but “just cheese” also would be understood. I have ordered for children and had to say, “just meat, cheese, and bread” to prevent confusion. Because anything outside the normal order can be messed up. As McDonalds is also very infamous in America for getting orders wrong, many American comedians have routines about it.

See at the McDonald’s I work at, we’ve got an IT issue, where if a customer asks for no meat patty, it just shows to us in the kitchen as remove 1 meat. Even if it’s a double or a triple cheese burger, it’s just: Remove 1 meat. Whenever we get one of those orders we’re just asking each other what it means, whether they don’t want meat, to place meat on the burger then remove it, or just remove one. It becomes a Chinese Whispers chain game where we completely losing what was asked.

Yh. Here in the uk (where English is the MAIN language cuz Yk England) burger always means bread and burger but sometimes I have to specify “burger and bun” when I say plain. Like I get sometimes they’re not English servers but “plain” doesn’t mean burger, bun and pickles. 😬
