Hey guys thanks a lot for the compliments! I wanted to clarify some things about this video, my English here is far from perfect so I wanted to correct myself in some parts. First of all at some point in the video I said that Gambale doesn't have the Rhythmic control while sweeping, of course that's not true, Gambale has a lot of rhythmic control and groove in his playing (he is one of my favorite players!) but my point is that rhythmic control is harder to achieve while sweeping with the pick because of the movement itself. If you perform an arpeggio with fingers you can basically decide every note order you want because the finger is already on the string, So with enough practice you are able to perform a lot of unusual string-skipping arpeggio ideas that can be more tricky with the pick, and also have more rhythmic control over the one note per string arpeggios because you don't have to "wait" for the pick to arrive on the string, the finger is already there! Of course there are also disadvantages about the fingerstyle technique, for example all the 3note per string patterns like the malmsteen- Paul Gilbert runs are easier with alternate picking rather than fingers, I had to work A LOT to achieve the hand synchronization for these kind of lines, so the main rule is that with fingers you have more possibilities with arpeggios, wide intervals ideas and basically everything that involves string skipping stuff, while the scales, chromatic runs, 3note per string ideas and basically all the lines where you have a lot of notes on the same string, are easier to play with the pick with alternate picking. You know, I m just an old amateur player but since I ve heard ur Chicken version, I knew that you were doing a kinda revolution in here, also with your 'fusionic' attitude. You are very very open minded and educated either, not only a great skill player. You influenced me to practice more without a pick. @Viral Virus I went to.listen to him as u suggested. The guy has perfect picking technique. But for me kinda that s all. Iistened him playing Giant steps by Coltrane. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apt5pJiVsJfHinU.html He is doing scales all the way up and down without any interesting melodical or rhythmical thought. Govan maybe 'slower' but his play is more intellectual and play/joyful. So he has nothing any jazzy in his soul. That would need a different base, different breathing that he seemingly lacks of

I'm an advanced player and I can't believe how good he is. I've never seen anybody have command of the fretboard like he has. There are so many different styles but overall he is just a prodigy. He's on the level as Liszt was on the piano and I'm serious about that statement - I stand by it!

To Matteo, something like "Eruption" is a given -- a basic building block. It is what, for example, the intro-lick to Johnny B. Goode would have have been to an earlier generation of players -- something that is taken for granted, and you build from there. What to us was a goal (like Eruption), is just a starting point for him. He is the absolute future of guitar -- bravo!!

This guy is going to set the bar to a level that has never been seen before.He is beyond anything that has EVER existed in regards to guitar playing.His knowledge of the fretboard and his applied theory is incredible.His right and left hand technique is that of an absolute prodigy.I have watched guitar players from the last fifty years and they can not be compared to this young man.

Matteo has simply demonstrated that when playing his guitar 🎸 that there are so many more levels that exist and are humanly possible... You see so many big names out there, so called "guitar gods" in the media... Then so take one listen to this kind soul Matteo, and realize that he IS an overwhelmingly incredible guitar player... Put it this way, the gods look up to him!!!!!! Simply fantabulous, and probably a "One and only" as we know it!!!!!!!! Matteo, my hat goes off to you my friend. A big hello from Spain 👍

@Viral Virus Those guys are great technical players, but this Italian kid is just a different type of beast. He's unbelievably musical and his timing is DEAD ON regardless of tempo. I've been listening to the greats for 45 years and Matteo's technique just seems unlimited right now. He might be a freak of Davinci proportions, we'll have to wait and see.

His ability to not only play technically difficult passages and music is just part of it. His absolute mastery of the entire spectrum of music styles is staggering! @Fred Virtuoso it is not about 'only' virtuosity. Su Meng does NOT improvise. Just checked out her. She is a classic performer, at first glance I cant see any revolutionary in her playing. Not only different (and kinda only one) genres but different approaches of Music. She is good but not much to do with Matteo.

@Fred Virtuoso I don't get ur points. 1. starting with an outsider/inproper argument which has nothing to do the basic conversation: "Asian girl" - yes she is? Are u searching for some PC talk? Ur addition "Italian boy" cant fit though: it should be "European guy" - but again, ur argument misleads. 2. If Matteo were US American he would be famous. Get it? That is why I like youtube so much because it helps us get to know many people (mostly) independently from the showbusiness makers and influencers. 3. I do not understand u r saying: "Matteo is a hack, studied other peoples music and sounds just like what he is in reality. Nothing original other than his fine technique which has limitations, although he seems to be so arrogant to think he's " Does Su Meng play her own invented music? Again a lame argument, sorry. From the other hand: I do not care. The question is: do u like what u hear or don't. I like to hear both but the rhythmical breath and the fusional notes I hear from Matteo is more entertaining for me (it's like Life, random, dynamic, unpredictable) than the academic classical stuff from Meng. 4. Matteo is not arrogant, you are biased. From the other hand he himself commented this video saying sorry he did not judge Gambale, he just stated why he chooses his finger style instead of sweep picking - and u know what? He is right , there s no bad in this, he just said a physical fact which the advantage is of finger over sweap and vica-versa.

@Fred Virtuoso I wrote some lines but disappeared, unfortunately. Briefly, I think you are biased, I feel you are insulted, sorry for that. I am half Asian too but it has nothing to do with Music. Seng plays and follows classical music, it is difficult for me to explore her originality but u may help me to see the nuances of why she is one of the best interpreters. Does she play contemporary pieces? Being an amateur I listen to Ravel, Debussy bc they are easy to digest for me and I like their revolution over Bach's hegemony. I also love Bartok but still listen to a Telemann or a Brahms , of course Beethoven etc too. I also love Metheny, Scoefield. They were the supported mainstream, but now we have internet and can see there were an Allan Holdsworth , a Shawn Lane etc out there who were extremely good too.

...e il problema dell'italia è che in radio NON si sentono questi fenomeni.....sentiamo solo immondizia confezionata da programmi di bassissimo livello (e non faccio nomi). In questo momento in italia regna la trap e le canzoncine demenziali, se accendi la radio, mediamente, ti viene da piangere.....è scandaloso. Grandissimo Matteo, sei un fenomeno.

Sono dei poveracci, questo ragazzo è uno di quei fuoriclasse che nascono ogni 30 anni, un messi della chitarra. L'inglese tutti lo possono imparare, anche in breve tempo, ma per padroneggiare la chitarra come fa Matteo non basta la pratica, serve un dono.

@@michaelciancetta6397 ......è una questione di cultura. Negli anni 70 in radio passavano quelli che hanno lasciato un'impronta nella storia della musica, come l'uomo sulla luna. Oggi accendiamo la radio (per dire) e chi sarebbe che lascerà un'impronta nella storia della musica?...chi ci fà venire la pelle d'oca?......quelli che stanno martellando il poppetto inglese pseudo rocchetto fighetto?....quelli che suonano e cantano tutti uguale?....quelli che scrivono testi che a leggerli casco dalla sedia?.......perchè questo c'è in onda. Comunque, si, può darsi che il ragazzo Matteo Mancuso non abbia un suo repertorio, può darsi che non abbia "il sound".....ma dubito che il suo scopo oggi sia la ricerca del sound. In sostanza, quello che intendo dire, secondo me, è che non c'è piu musica in radio. Solo business da canzonette e gruppetti bellissimimissimi. Comunque, prendendo spunto dal tuo commento (che per certi versi è anche giusto), dai: speriamo che anche Mancuso ci regali tanta musica scritta da lui, con un sound direttamente proporzionale alle sue capacità.

It's amazing until you need to play fast tremolo on a single string. Good luck with that. That's probably the hardest thing on finger style guitar.

@@ValerioBettini the surname is italian and so must be pronounced like Matteo have done. Frank pronounce that way because he adapted to the contest living in Australia and Usa. But it's like if your name is Smith and someone pronounce Smooth or even worse.

It is such delight for the eyes to see your right hand finger movements which are so fluid n easy effortless that leaves me in total awe. You, Wes Montgomery, Jeff Beck, Mark Knoffler have defined fingerstyle of playing in your own unique way. You are a true genius. Hatts off.

i just wish age doesnt bring his spectacular technique down, and hopefully his musicality progresses even more along with his already Godlike finesse and control. hes still particularly young, maybe 2-3 decades of active playing. Seeing this in context, if you think of the 19th century virtuosos we had Paganini (violin), Giuliani (guitar) and Liszt (Piano) who accentuated the importance of arpeggios, albeit as a dinner party method of titilation and getting concert engadgements. Piano composer's such as Rachmaninoff blew the whole enchilada open. Then in jazz, violinist Grappelli did that thing, followed by Coltrane. By that time we had guitarist Andres Segovia telling his students to play scales and arpeggios two hours per pay; and remember Villa-Lobos explored some very interesting arpeggio patterns in his Douze Etudes. The flamenco guys had always ripped it up, especially with the developments made by Paco De Lucia. We also had the ultra-sophisticated Allan Holdsworth followed by a rather crude but effective Malmsteen. The late 1980s spawned a host of metal sweepers. I notice that some of Mancuso's arpeggios employs consecutive fourths and fifths, which is very Chick Corea. The convenience is that the string tuning easily allows for such patterns; whilst for a very long time, arguments have raged as to if fingerpicking has often proven to be superiour to that of the plectrum. But the fact that both plectrum and fingers are different, it would be a boring world if we all played the same. Thanks for posting! Best regards, Dale Harris

a momentous Malmsteen actually. liszt had amazing arpeggios as well. im afraid very little is known among guitar players of the vast and superior work of the classical realm that exists still today.

Thing is, theres no need to actually think so futher and so out of the box when it comes to play guitar with a fairly stylish chops, just look at the sound and timbre, the attack and common main phrasing off other instruments, especially from different styles. My current goal is to do koto, bandoneon and lute inspired licks without tunning different or applying quirks on the guitar, the guitarist s hand skills arent done yet in my book. There s more to learn about how to squeeze sounds out off guitar with our hands, i think. Good thing Matteo s a preeminent example of all this eye opener fact by now.

I've been playing guitar over 50 yrs - acoustic & electric - all genres, & I know a lot about many many guitarist - from all genres - known & unknown, ( to musicians, & then the public at large ) . There exist , currently - on youtube , whether their own channel's, or they were, recorded on someone else's, channel & uploaded , - the most talented virtusio's, that I have ever heard & seen, But- this young man, Thus Far, is the best, in any & all styles) genres , that I have discovered/found.

This young man has the ability to change how everyone approaches the electric guitar. If he could just break out and become as famous as he deserves to be. He really is on a level with Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen and even Jimi Hendrix. He’s a virtuoso with a new way to approach the instrument that can influence millions of future players.

This is definitely insane, I've been playing guitar since the 60's, seen the best, i.e. Frank Gambale, George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Mateo Asato and so on, but this Matteo takes it up a number of notches, bar none, he could easily play with Chick Corea, would love to see that!

Chick's had some great guitar players [my fav. was Bill Connors]. I agree; I'd love to see this guy play with him. I'd actually watch him in any setting. I've never seen anyone better.

The sequenced arpeggio can be alternate picked by starting at the position matt is playing here but then shifting down to the string skipped shape starting on the 8th fret then sweeping back up again and sliding the pinky from the 8th to 12th fret to start over.

I would call it leading with the first finger versus leading with the tapping hand. I have been teaching this technique to students for 23 years. Learning to lead with all fingers makes you much more competent as a player than others.

When I was in my teens in the mid 1970s, you had all the fast Fusion players like John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola with their quick picking, and sure, I wanted to play fast like that too. But I absolutely sucked at picking. Then I heard Allan Holdsworth, who had a whole unique sound that was like nobody else. So I started doing more of a legato approach with the left hand with very little right hand picking. After a while I just stopped using picks entirely, and started using more of a hyper picking technique with my thumb and 3 fingers.

a bit of luck and bit of hard work, being born in the right family and having a dad who plays gipsy jazz helps a lot, but also starting to play at young age and being incline to learn fast is perhaps necessary as well

There's another young prodigy Andreas Varaday who's dad is a musician etc.. and the kid was nailing George Benson's stuff like it was nothing when he was 15 years old ! He's 23 now and phenomenal .. Thom Ibarro is another young guitarist that's off the scale.. The future of guitar playing is in great hands.. Matteo is playing Allan Holdsworth and Guthrie Govan stuff and he's just a puppy.. that's straight crazy !

The recipe for a MM is a long list of styles mixed together so many hours a day for so many years with such wonderful ingredients as Alan Holdsworth, Eric Johnson, Frank Gambale, Malmsteen, Vai, Van Halen, Stanley Jordan, etc, plus an endless list of you tubers, then the classical greats Segovia, incorporated with a youngan born to musicians. It's alive, special and growing in popularity. As most of us are, Yamaha is also proud and thankful for MM.

When I was a kid I played with a guy who was like that, I was 16 and he was 14 at the time. He could play like Blackmore, EVH or Satriani. This is not something about speed or practising, it was a pure born talent, like Matteo. And he understood music by instinct. Born virtuoso, very rare thing,.

Whoever is commenting about it not being "musical enough" and "just technical prowess" is completely missing the point of this video and this interview. I'm all about melody as well but it's not a freaking crime to talk technique and thank God we have such gifted players like Matteo. The fact that I maybe wouldn't listen to his album is a completely different matter and doesn't take anything away from his incredible preparation.

What's great about his sweep picking is his right hand is not sweeping down and up the strings like we do using a pick.

The new generation of guitarists, including Matteo Mancuso, have taken the instrument to an entirely new level. The "leap forward" in skill and style in recent years is unprecedented, dating back to when Eddie Van Halen arrived on the scene in 1978. The problem is that none of them have broken through on a mainstream level. That probably has more to do with what is considered popular music nowadays, and guitar's relatively small role in that world. It's too bad, but can the average person name a guitar player that's hit the scene in the last 20 years? Even John Mayer has been around longer than that. How many people know about the Polyphia guys? I know they've got a decent following, but have they even come close to cracking the mainstream? If you look at the evolution of the instrument in the last 75 years, it's still mainly three guys that stand out: Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix & Eddie Van Halen. It seems like the only way to bring attention back to the guitar and the amazing advancement modern players have made is for someone like Taylor Swift or Drake to feature one of these virtuosos prominently in their music.

You're correct , there has been nobody like Berry Hendrix and Van Halen . Those are the guys , well the two who get mentioned more than any other is Jimi and Eddie . While there have been plenty of super talented players to come along none are remotely close to those two .
