Thank you for our video! The use of technology really comes down to personal conviction, style, and experience. It can be both the Bible and technology. I see many well known preachers using printed and numbered pages that are the same size of the pages in their Bible. I would argue flipping through those pages during a sermon is no less distracting than scrolling through a PDF manuscript on an iPad. It is actually more distracting for me as I can't help but count many pages they have turned over wonder how many they have left! I would much rather know that someone is preaching from a well prepared manuscript than trying to pull together the fragmented pieces they can remember from their sermon and failing to adequately communicate the Word in the process as they awkwardly ad lib. Ultimately, each preacher should do what best enables him to faithfully preach the Word.

I get sick can my stomach when I see the church not using their Bible's not bringing their Bibles the Bible's is nowhere in play 😮😔 especially the preacher I strongly believe he of all should be leading us with the Bible in hand your church is the one I would go to seek out and love to be a part of. You are everything I want from a Man of God... never stop never change what you're doing it is extremely powerful. And I pray one day the Lord puts a guy like you in my path a church that I can become a part of too. 🙏

I’ve been asked to preach in Presbyterian churches . I always find the experience rewarding. I love the experience

If memory serves, John A. Broadus, a Southern Baptist professor from the 19th century, also told his students to write out a full manuscript and then leave it at home.

I never was a pastor but when I preached, I found expository preaching to be easier because one is not jumping around chasing scripture references. For a Bible doctrines or "Commonplaces" class, one may have to look up various scripture references. However, in the pulpit, I agree that expository preaching should be the usual method, while a topical study is best done only occasionally. I find you to be an excellent and edifying speaker, and learn a lot from your videos. Thanks!

Hi there pastor Matt, I've been really enjoying your channel here is Oz. I'm a young reformed Baptist. I serve in my church leading corporate worship and lay preaching. It really struck me your comments on stop trying to imitate others...when I've struggled in my preaching it has been when I've tried to be someone else instead of just being myself. The power is not in me, but in the word of God. I keep trying to remind myself again and again keep preaching Jesus, keep pointing people to him and the salvation that he alone brings, and depend on the Spirit of Truth to take the word and do a work in people. Also agree with the comments on PPT. I find it distracting and preachers fumble their way through slides instead of pointing me to the text. Grace and peace,

Thank you for this!!! I agree with all of this and have done most of it as long as I have preached. ( I was lucky enough to have a preacher teach me this as a young person) However its easy to get away from it, its nice to hear it again !!! Strengthening !!!

Great advice. About 20 years ago when visiting family in GA we went to church with my aunt, she went to Andy Stanley’s church. It was Veterans Day. Walking out of the church my niece who was only about 9 years old said, “nobody had a Bible, he didn’t mention Jesus.” Enough said.

Can you do a video on what what men wanting to be pastors can do when seminary is not an option?

I manuscript exclusively and preach that very manuscript, word for word, dynamically. God has gifted me with the ability to write well. I, personally, believe that the Spirit of God is as active, if not more so, with regards, especially, to the content, during the preparation of a sermon as He is in the delivery of it. At the end of the day, this is conviction that has been placed upon myself for myself. I know its not for everyone.

This video was extremely helpful. Any advice for common mistakes that newly minted preachers might make?

I know this is a few years post creation, but I wanted to make a few comments. 1) I agree with you about the technology!! I have been in services where technology was in every portion of the service, from pre-service prayer to song service to announcements and then the preaching. It was just too much. I can understand having the songs on a screen or wall during the singing, though I still prefer the hymnal/ songbook. However, most other applications are distractions and not complements to the sermon of lesson. This would not be an absolute rule for a Bible study service, such as generally occurs in the midweek. But video clips before or during are most often an atrocity and not particularly reverent. 2) I agree with an open physical Bible in the pulpit, but I will request your mercy if I do not carry my study Bible that I preach from back and forth across the platform in one hand while holding a microphone in the other. I would hope that you would agree that this is a recipe for disaster, particularly if the message notes are contained in the pages. 3) I think that your idea of writing the message out is intriguing. I am not a pastor, and my ability to preach in our small congregation is somewhat limited, but this does seem to be a useful idea, particularly if one is preparing a message for an indefinite occassion. As I am not generally informed until the day of, sometimes with only a couple of hours notice, implementing this might be more difficult. I generally preach my messages from a rough outline of Scriptural addresses that I intend to read, quote, or reference, which tends not to allow me to stray too far from the Scripture.

Great video. I disagree with the tech one. I think personally there is little difference between paper manuscript and a tablet. But that's just my opinion. Awesome video like normal just giving my opinion.

Excellent advice. Thanks for the video! I went through the same tech removal phase. I do still have slides of my text, verse by verse to assist the audience, but other than that it’s just me and my Bible. And I don’t use a podium or hid behind anything. I’m right in front of the congregation in the aisle with Bible in hand. Since making these moves my preaching has really improved and the congregation keeps voicing how much more personal and effective it is.

About 12-13 years ago. I read where Spurgeon made his students preach from a manuscript for five years. I did it for three and after that went to basically preparing a manuscript but preaching from an outline. I was amazed at how my memory was expanded to remember full sermons that I studied

Such a timely advise and great video. Agree to all except dropping the tech. Moses used stone tablets, Ezekiel was eating scrolls and the NT has been using scrolls as well. I think the church should use new tech but very carefully and thoughtfully. Just my opinion. Praise God!
