Been in commission only solar for the last 3 years! Currently transitioning to a xDR role. It’s a rough environment to succeed, but I think the experience will help me when transitioning to a tech sales role.

I did commission only d2d water softeners for 2.5 years. Then went into outside tech sales, then got laid off and went to solar. The tech sales seemed harder to me. But it was a meat grinder company. Trying to get back into tech since I don’t have insurance or base and I have a baby on the way with mortgage expenses etc

I think you were part of a network marketing firm/MLM - these firms usually suggest you to sell to your friends/family -- thats how they make their money - recruiting a bunch of sales people to sell their product to a few of their friends and family - thats how they catch the wide net of customers. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with financial advisors or sales people -- you really just need to think about what you are selling - if you believe it can help people and think of the structure of the company u r working for. AVOID MLMs at all costs - just not worth your time or money - its a cult for sure.

Yeah, I did have a similar experience this past year. I'm willing to bet on myself as any other sales rep. However, when i had to shell out my own money for software licenses/seats i knew it was time to leave. Fast forward to this year, i have the highest base salary I've ever made and a compensation package geared more towards producing top line revenue collectively as an organization which was more realistic. In a previous video you did mentioned a wide range in commission or total compensation package to be another red flag. I appreciate sharing this as success is not always a linear path. Thanks for your candor and keeping it real.

Great video Matt! I've had a somewhat similar experience with an ECommerce Network Marketing group. Funny thing is, I would go to their seminars every week to bring a new person into the group. Have meetings in hotels, have to use the products, had to tell the plan to family and friends, etc. I will say that I like their training but in terms of the overall company, I felt pretty used for my resources. That was 5 years ago. The company is still around, still have meetings in Philly and Bala Cynwyd and I run into some people that are or are former from there. I will say that I will NEVER do that again

I was in real estate for 9 years I’m 29 now and just quit my commission only job. Def not for everyone but I don’t think it’s worth it you’ll have more anxiety wanting to close a deal because of your expenses. So you made a right move before wasting a lot of time

I have an interesting success story. Been watching your sales videos for a while. I’ve also been watching these dating videos on approaching girls in public instead of using dating apps. So I saw this attractive girl at the mall today and felt nervous to approach. I couldn’t think of an opening line, then for some reason I recalled your sales videos and the “quick question” email subject like came to my mind (not sure if you discussed this particular subject line or if your channel reminded me of somewhere else I saw this.) Anyways I tried it out on the girl lol. I said “hey excuse me, can I ask you a quick question?” She says “yeah what’s up” I said “you’re gorgeous do you have a boyffiend” Very positive reaction, had a great chat and ended up exchanging numbers.

A shame really - every single one of those friends and family members you didn't want to call on actually do need to protect themselves and their family with a proper insurance and retirement plan. Now, they'll likely end up working with some commission-breath jackass that doesn't care about them.

@@MattMacnamara LOL. I don't think you've done a lot of research. Giving the aging population (aka baby boomers and Gen X), there is more wealth set to transfer generationally in the next 10-20 years than has ever been seen in the history of money. There is a MOUNTAIN of money to be made helping these folks. As long as there are taxes and investment options, people with that new money are going to need professional guidance on how to best manage those assets and reduce, where possible, their tax burden on an ongoing basis. What you're saying is akin to saying their won't be lawyers and accountants in 15 years - never gonna happen LOL. It's obvious you didn't believe in what you were doing - that's why you failed understandably. I launched a life insurance business just over a year ago and killed it my first year. Why? Because my wife has had 5 brain tumors and has been disabled for 8 years. We have seen the benefits of proper insurance planning - which forms my belief in what it is I am doing. It also means the friends and family I have are my most important prospective clients because I care about them.
