Often, smaller items are looked over by new builders looking to make a name for themselves because they are looking for "that one build" that they can sell for a ton of money. They aren't considering the cost of the build and the time spent making it. Ultimately any business comes down to profit margins. I'll give you a few examples of how selling items that anyone can afford can generate crazy sales with minimal cost of goods sold!

I’ve made almost $500 on the planter boxes in just under a week. Just did it for fun to see if they would sell in my area and they semi took off. I have 6 more orders to build currently.

@@MatthewPeechWoodworking thanks. I’ve made probably $15,000 in a year on farmhouse style benches. I got to where I was building them from 2x4 to completed bench in 30 minutes. I just build as a hobby. Fun to build and see what I can make. I’m building a 1:12 scale house now.

I'm curious; what are you selling them for? I know my area will be different, I'm just looking to get a rough idea what others are selling the planters for.

@@shda5582 probably less than some. But I’ve always been one to be the one that’s just under others pricing. I sell them for $25 each with a cost of $6.50 in it. Almost 4 times the cost. I’m sure I could get more but they are quick, simple and I sell a decent amount of them. The higher the price the longer it sits. I currently have $250 worth of orders to build that I’ll probably have built today. Most of my customers when they see the 2 they ordered they order 2 more. One even ordered 4 more.

A friend and I built 10 sets of nesting planter boxes, 3 in each set (large, medium, small). Took them to the local, twice a year fair here in Japan, along with some wall art pieces, jewelry holders, and wall keychain holders. Only sold 2 of the $5 wall keychain holders the entire day. Spent a few hundred on the rental spot, as well as some materials and new tools, and only got back $5 each. Disappointing. I suppose the fair is just a place to sell cheap crap and food.

Happy to say that your videos have inspired me to make my wood working hobby into a full time career, always had trouble with keeping regular jobs, was diagnosed with ADHD/Anxiety disorder at 48 years old and needed to change things and watching your videos encouraged me to take what I love and make money doing it. Before I started my own business, I've only had one boss who understood what me having adhd meant (he has a kid with it) so he knew I'm probably gonna be late every day with a crazy out of this world excuse that basically boiled down to I got distracted on my way in, but the trade off to being late everyday was I aint leaving til I finished a project I started which lead to leaving later everyday, and it wasn't unusual for me to be working on multiple projects at once, I still stay in touch with him 15 yrs later, was one of the best most understanding bosses I've ever had

Re: Fear of Failure… if you’re anything like me, you find it really tough to take. But know that failure is necessary to some degree. It took me 4 tries to get a single desk that looked good. That’s 4 desk builds. 4. Whole. Desks. I didn’t give up. I learned from each build, and I was looking forward to number 5 when I stopped - mostly because I didn’t need another desk! 😂 Seriously, though, it’s the failures that push me forward, to learn, to be better, and to do better work. Don’t be afraid to fail, be afraid to quit because you did.

I've done the window frames before. However, I added a simple silhouette of either an animal or something like an evergreen tree, paint it black then added it to each frame. Made them both with & without silhouettes. The ones with silhouettes sell 25% better in my area.

I'm so glad I stumbled onto this. My 64 year old husband is currently building our 3 log cabins homestead from the wood on our property here in East Tn..The first one is just beautiful...I have to tell him about this. Don't think small projects like this have crossed his mind...but he would enjoy this..and it would keep me out of Hobby Lobby...a little..lolol

I made that long shelf from old pallets, the curved ends are already on the pallet boards, just cut the ends if the pallet board, sand enough so there are not splinters and the patina remains. Excellent wine bottle holder

Hobby Lobby shopper here! I actually have that last one hanging over my mantle. Thank you so much for making this video! it gave me a new prospective on those super cute things that I want but don't want to spend what they're asking. I'm going to give it a shot just making them for myself and possibly Christmas presents. Also, side note- Hobby Lobby always doubles the price that most people pay as they have rotating sales every month. So that last one was $75, but I paid $37.50 +tax. Still too much, but I definitely bought it!!

Yeah they do those sells to move the piece out for what they know it should probably cost. However this is also a lesson to buy from a craftsman rather than corporate chain stores. They pay pennies to get bucks. Making things your self also rewards you much more than anything. It just feels right.

I made something very similar to that long farm house box a few years ago out of one end of a pallet, I use it to put whiskey bottles in, just cut above the notch on the side rail and add a piece on the bottom so simple, it's already distressed, stain or I burnt mine, look cool and had a lot of compliments on it. Thanks for bringing all these ideas up!

So I'm a huge Diyer. I walk around with my daughters in the decor area and they oh and aww things they would want in their room or apartment. Then they look at me and I give them a nod yes, which doesn't mean I'm going to buy it but means I'm going to make it for them. Then I go home ponder it and make it for a fraction of the price and customize it for them so it's not just some mass produced item but a personalized one of a kind piece they can display in their home. One example is My youngest saw a set of mushroom drawings she liked for her kitchen they were in white frames which she was meh about. I went home drew up some similar style mushrooms but added some lesser known culinary mushrooms we grow. Then watercolored them and framed them in some made distressed gray scrap wood frames cut down the glass out of an old mass produced picture she had that she didn't want and she was in love. They wanted $50 for the set of 3. I didn't pay anything for them and had fun making them and hers are actually painted with with professional grade at supplies so it will last decades. Her in laws asked where she got them and she said with pride my mom made them. ❤❤❤

I’ve been making old and vintage windows out of fence pickets. I make them out of pine and cedar just in case people want them for their gardens. They are great!

I made the long farm house box accidentally years ago by cutting the end off an old pallet. It hangs in our bathroom. My wife has rags and towels in it. They are rolled up fancy and never used, of course. 😂

The hexagon shelf is amazing! There is one the same but metal in my local charity (thrift) shop for £15 painted gold. Its lovely but a high price for second hand and a bit beat up, so its been there for a couple months. I am a beekeeper and love making bee theme items to sell with my honey on my stall so I often woodburn bee theme sayings and drawings, but I may need to make some of these (maybe one for me) and use on the stall to display and then some to sell Thanks for sharing 🧡

Good Morning, Has anyone suggested selling the octagon as singles and let the customer decide how they want to lay them out? You could even predrill holes so they can attach them when they get them home.

I wish I could find pine non-pressure treated fence pickets here. Its either 3/4 inch pressure treated pickets or cedar pickets that are suppose to be 5/8 of a inch but a lot are undersized. But it is fun to watch your videos and make these items out of cedar. I don't like working with the pressure treated pickets myself.

With the window pain, the last piece, you could add mirrors and/or cork board for pictures, I actual made one with burlap and wire, with baby clothes pins, to hang all kinds of opjects. Great Video, my friend.

Good ideas. The mitered corners on the first frame are end grain and don't need anything more than PVA glue to be ultra-strong. If you are "in production", a few jigs and regular clamps would work fine. This would be a good example of when you can follow Titebond's own recommendations and take off the clamps if you need to at 20-30 mins.

Made the hexagon box's, only 3 because I messed up the first one. Took me around 2 hours but I don't have a shop setup yet so had to pull equipment out setup, rip cut, stained and assemble. Oh, and made a jig as well. Now let's see if we can get some orders coming in. Also,

I could even see a few different configurations of hexagons on display and also selling singles and offering to fasten together on the spot to a custom config. A few spots of CA glue and a spray of hardener on the matching board. Or maybe screws. Of course this means someone manning the till while someone else goes in the back to do the deed.

The long farm house basket could be made for free if done right just pick up some nice oak pallets that most factories give away cut the ends center of the fork hoops one pallet can make 4 of those if cut properly

window frame brought back a bad memory... back in the 90s bought from HL a pair of frame window mirrors...put them on a wall above our family room sofa... cleaning on saturdays kept find crumbs of wood on the top back of the sofa... eventually realized there were bug borer holes in the wood of the frames dropping down from the frames... yup... bug infested wood... took it back to HL and the ladies up front were panic/horrorified seeing the critters i pried out and dropped on the register counter top....

The scent of Hobby Lobby is mostly eucalyptus. When I was working at a vape shop, we got a cbd icy hot roll on thing to sample. I smelled it and was hit with vague nostalgia and realized it smelled exactly like Hobby Lobby. I told my co worker and it turns out she used to work there and was the person that would fill the scent sprayer things and told me the secret formula but all I remember was eucalyptus is the main ingredient lol

The window looking project I have been doing for a while except I put plastic sheets in the window pane spots along with some backers from picture frames and now instead of a boring window I have a picture frame. Down the center line I cut out some letters to spell out "family" or the family name if its a custom job. I've sold a few of each so far. My local furniture store does consignment sells and they go through a lot of stuff like that to the point they have asked me to keep them stocked with things and a lot of the ideas come from these videos.
