Grow your woodworking business with "smalls"! Ready for the latest trends!?!
Often, smaller items are looked over by new builders looking to make a name for themselves because they are looking for "that one build" that they can sell for a ton of money. They aren't considering the cost of the build and the time spent making it. Ultimately any business comes down to profit margins. I'll give you a few examples of how selling items that anyone can afford can generate crazy sales with very little cost of goods sold!
Sometimes we overthink things when the most profitable items we are looking past. Let's change that.

Got a tip. Dollar Tree has a lot of cheap laser cut Halloween decorations right now. I wanted to make a rustic pumpkin, but I can't free hand draw to save my life. I bought one of their pumpkins and am going to use it as the template to trace on my boards. They have plenty of others too. In fact they actually have a decent little wood craft section.

There's a fella in my area that hangs out all fall and winter at the (yes, "the") abandoned gas station, giving out free bundles of firewood. He sources the wood from suburbs being cleared for development, so all it costs him is gas money. Any donations, he forwards along to local churches so they can provide warm clothes to families in need. I've gotten some pretty awesome stumps from him in the past! Most recently, he brought me a 13' long pine branch with a lot of character, that I'll be cleaning up and turning into a huge feature light to hang from the ceiling in my living room. :D

Thanks for the comment. Well... your right. I don't. I am on here to teach... and that's what I'm going to do. There shouldn't be secrets when it comes to trades... we are all trying to learn and get by just the same so why hide anything. One of the reasons I started this channel was just that. Too many channels not teaching... just showing off. I wanted it to come across as if I'm teaching a buddy something that's in the shop with me. So I'm happy to hear I'm reaching some folks on that level. Thanks for your support!

Matt I have been turning out custom pieces for years, mainly for friends and family and their acquaintances, and as you have guessed next to no profit and sometimes at a loss especially where time and design is concerned….. So glad I happened across your videos, and I believe I’m going to start getting ready for the next season or holiday and start doing “ Small’s “ ! ! you are so right, I live in a small town where there are like 5-6 of these small craft shops and I am lucky enough to be in the centre of a couple to 3 hours away from large cities, Although Woodworking is not my source of income, I do find myself with 1-2 weeks off between turn arounds at my regular job, So I am going to see where this can take me. Thanks so much for the inspiration p, definitely will be subscribing and I’ll keep tabs and notes and perhaps give you an update in 6 months. Cheers Brother and keep up the Great work !

Mr Peech, you are a BAD MAN.....having me think I can make items from reclaimed wood and fence pickets and actually make money. Terrible./sarc The fall craft show was THIS weekend and I had nothing ready, but I am making my daughter some halloween decor items. My problem is full time job and other chores leave me little time for wood work. Tho I did make 2 planters, and will make 2 cedar planters for my mom for her new house. Next month I need to make a few Christmas items. I love how something as simple as a window type frame can sell....amazing.

Heck yea!!! Lol herringbone is a lil tedious but for larger pieces they are selling as art and getting paid for that pain. And the firewood! Yes! Even if its not a round theres alot you can do with some of the pre split stuff. Square it up and you have a nice chunk of wood.

Hey AT! You know... if you are making the same thing over and over and over then yes... You can get burnt out and it is a job. What I do to keep that from happening is to make so many of one item and then move on. I like doing my own builds how I want to make them and then sell them. I would make 5 tables... market them as limited release... and then start on the next project that I wanted to make and repeat. The smalls help to grow as a woodworker, learn, and to create income when the larger items aren't. Just depends on how you look at it and how well you grow your name. Thanks for the input!

Agree. Just recently I cranked out two jack’o lantern porch features (added some remote fairy lights inside). Added an interesting roof & branch for the stem. Also built a decorative holiday lantern - using old upright rails used in decking. Inside was filled with a decorative vase & more bright twinkling fairy lights. The fairy lights add a lot to these projects & are cheap as add ons. Ps - used a decorative wooden finial from old curtain rods as the lantern topper. Looked like it came from a high-end store.

I made the wood rounds for our wedding (cake stand, centerpiece, etc.) They looked amazing and were basically free because I got the wood from a friend's tree they had taken down. If I had bought the rounds the size I waned it would have been thousands in essentially chainsaw cut rounds. I couldn't believe how much people are willing to pay for basically rescued firewood.

Thanks for all the great ideas. My husband took the plunge last year and started his wood working business. We have so much scrap wood I feel the need to rescue but I'm so out of the loop on what's hot now. Ty!

It’s funny right? Woodworkers spend years perfecting their skills, practicing techniques, aiming for perfection… while what the commoners all want are just slabs glued together! Well, better for us I guess. Easy and fast to make. Thanks for the video!

Nice! I like the way you think! I used to buy the old wire limb ones from goodwill or wherever and make wreaths from the branches. Sold like crazy and could make any size.

My variation for the framed stars uses badly cupped pallet wood that I run through the planner but still leave rough in the center. It’s a cool look! I also make them in 3 sizes. People always buy 2 this way!! I change up the frame to a face nailed style that’s just a little smaller that the overall picture. Again just a little different flare that makes it mine. Also I brand all my builds with a little 1 inch brand I had a nice lady on Amazon help me design. It was $35 best $ I have spent in awhile.

I took some small triangles like the off cuts from your star frame, made them level on the "base", arranged them three at a time, painted them green, added some color dots, for a "mini" three holiday christmas tree shelf decoration.... Just sayin'!

Hi Matt, love your channel brother! I love the way you think and inspire us to "think outside the box" (even if you made the box 🙂) Anyway, as some else had said, the pumpkin stack dimensions just didn't sound right to me based on the look of it, so I went to Kirkland's site. Just to let the community know, the dimensions are 27.75" H x 15.25" W x 5" D. Looking at review pics it looks like 2-by material. The way Kirkland's wrote their dimensions (27.75"H x 5"W x 15.25L) threw me for a bit, but photos confirmed. Keep up the great work!!
