Germany's Matthias Steiner won Olympic weightlifting gold at the 2008 Beijing summer games, but just a year previously he almost quit the sport completely. The German had a very different reason to most athletes for the emotional outpour that Olympic victory sparks.

The story didn't end here. In 2009 Matthias had to skip the world championship as he had to undergo surgery and thus couldn't regain shape in time. The next year he became world champion. Steiner found a new love and married her in 2012. He's now a successful nutrition coach and speaker.

I met this guy in a supermarket in Leimen, Germany. I think no one realized it was him, looked like a normal big guy doing grocery shopping. The best part about him wasn't actually the competition but the interview he gave on german TV. It was one of the nicest guys ever interviewed in a sports interview, maybe that's why he has become kind of a TV star in Germany since.

Jason W His wife probably wasn't on his mind as he lifted the weight. His mind was probably on lifting the weight and maintaining his form. His wife could most definitely be the reason he showed up to compete that day, or the reason he trained hard to get where he was, but in that exact moment I would say most weightlifters would agree that she probably was not what was running through his mind at that moment

After he lifted his ultimate weight, he`s going down and his face seems to express all his torture and grief, his longing and humbleness in the second of his greatest success in life. He will be in my heart not because he was professional but because he was a human being torn by doubt.and faith, outgrowing himself in his most authentic second of his life. That`s what live is about, far away from consume, profession and security, there he is, the inner core we are searching for.

I think this is my favorite Olympics story of all time. I think about it a lot in my daily life. There are other athletes who have maybe overcome more adversity or come from less privileged backgrounds or stuff like that, and there's other athletes who were more dominant, maybe the GOATs of their sports like Bolt and Phelps, but this is the one that just keeps coming back to me. The story of losing his wife and then pushing through and winning, from behind, against the absolute BEST of the sport, in one last mammoth push that realistically he probably shouldn't have been able to do, but he did it, and he did it for her. It moves me more than any other sports moment ever has.

Germany is the Pioneer of the ‘State-Sponsored’ Doping Programmes, which injected banned substance steroids or PEDs to their a few thousand of Olympic athletes and national team Footballers.(both of East and West Germany did it) But most of People don’t know that And Mathhias Steiner didn’t compete major weightlifting competitions for 3 years (since 2005 until early of 2008), because of his naturalization problem. It would mean that he had absolutely used steroids during his break times, look at his body type today. *P.S) He competed at 105kg- division in 2004 Olympics with represent Austria. At that time, his body weight was “104.35”kg, but 4 years later his body weight largely increased to “145.93”kg.* As I said before, he ‘didn’t compete major Weightlifting competitions for 3 years (2005 ~ early 2008). I strongly guarantee that he had used steroids like East&West German Weightlifters during his break times 🇩🇪🇩🇪💉

@@hansdampf478 I hope you are still with us, buddy. I do not know your story - when you were born, where and under which circumstances and what your childhood might have been like and what your childhood trauma might have been. I hope you are alive and as well well as you might be possible. Everyone does not start this journey with the same cards. And I do not know why you think that you will never find a wife. Or a dream? I do not have a wife either and this does not keep me from living. Do you have parents or siblings - do you have friends - are there people you might be talking to when you choose to leave your appartement? I know it is not easy, but I think you might be able to shape your own positive future! All the best to you!
