I like how Matthias often uses reclaimed wood and scrap materials. He also builds in layers, seems to start from a basic idea and expands the design as he goes along..

I started accounting for is after reading 'The Traditional Bowyer's Bibles' in the '90's and in the Gluing chapter they had a demonstration photo of a piece of timber that had been lying around the workshop. One half they scraped the surface, one half left alone, then a drop of water put on each half, and took the photo about 30sec- 1 min later; and the water was still beaded up on the left alone half! It made it's point :)

I enjoy learning from folks like you. Easy going. No manufactured dramatic tones (aka - "reality TV"). Just the joy of doing and the joy of sharing what you've learned. Appreciate it! Nearing retirement, and looking forward to developing some basic wood working skills. Thank you Sir!

What would be convenient is if there was a way to screw two pieces of wood together without first making a notch...I've got some scrap pieces of blue plastic leftover from a project with which i might try to make a jig.

Thanks for telling us how long it actually took. I think the time lapse style is the best way to show anything over about 5 to 10 minutes. Much better than showing every cut and screw drive in real time.

Made my first “pocket holes” yesterday. Using the reverse drilling method I learned from your previous video, thank you! I was surprised how well the countersinking bit followed from the Finish face side; worked out real well. That shop apron or maybe the few gray hair I'm seeing sure shows you're maturing well Matthias. Keep up the good work!!!

Love it! Just at the right time, was trying to think of the best way to do this using scrap under my bench, as usual you've already thought it all through for me.. Thanks Matthias! And I will be sanding that 'atmospheric surface grime' from now on! > (I actually used to do that, then got slack as I thought I could get away without it.)

It is a notch. Some might call it a diagonal cut to facilitate a screw but it is a notch.

Pre-drilling, the necessary action of woodwork. 2:15 I saw at the hardware store that they have tool, that clamps on, the "pocket hole jig", for drilling angled/notch holes which cuts a step out.

Really appreciate the actual time summary. That's about how long it probably would have taken me, but most creators would have said '1 hour' :) Either way, my wife would be asking me "what's taking so long" after 20 minutes.

Thanks for introducing 'the notch' - it would be interesting to test strengths against pocket holes. And it looks great, customising drawers to make them bespoke to your needs. There's always a hitch with ready built cabinets. Weak draw bottoms with far too narrow dado slots to support them [esp. in flat pack rubbish]. Access to the back of draws, or inversely the drawer comes straight out and crashes into your foot!. Good job - but what about access to your kitchen cupboards now you've stolen the trays?

The depth behind those drawers leaves plenty room for a secret drawer. For pocket hole paraphernalia for example.

ha ha ha. Except the bottom rails aren't long enough so things would fall off the back. Maybe if I put a trashbin back there, then the pocket hole paraphinalia drawer cann fall straight into the trash.
