This is a free plug for you. I just purchased your air engine and original combo lock plans. The Sketchup drawings, support files, and information are really good and extensive. Even the website is well done. And I find the Sketchup files a good way to learn how to create drawings and lay things out. I really recommend people have a look. They are low cost and informative even if you never make the project. This will probably be the case for me.

You probably already know this, but If you have access to a a 3D CAD package instead of 2D vector drawing package, you can assemble the parts in 3D and check for interference to minimize these errors. Autodesk Fusion 360 is a nice example and is free for hobbyists/students :)

I genuinely think you should get a cnc machine or make one(CNC router preferably). I know you are a little icky about them but you are more than qualified to use them and what a brain like yours could do with them is unimaginable. Also having one could help you make some more content while you are healing, as most of the work is done by the CNC.

For all the math geeks out there, it would seem that we have been referring to these type of locks by the wrong name. According to my undergraduate math professor, we should be calling them "permutation locks," because there is an order that has to be followed for it to open, which is not the case with a 'combination.'" But calling them permutation locks would only lead to a lot of head scratching and misguided corrections.

The benefits of having your own CNC mill or laser cutter is obvious, you will find the design mistakes right after you cut your first prototype. Unlike the laser, the CNC mill does not burn the wood, however, you have a much larger curf to account for when producing the G-code.
