Great tut. I had no idea how to use Phase Plant before seeing your tutorials and subscribing. More please. In fact, I would happily buy a phase plant video course from you if you ever decide to make one. I do have one question: the pitch of the loop you are working on affects the speed. In Kontakt, I would deal with that using a mode like Time Machine. What can I do in phase plant to ensure that the speed of the loop does not alter as I play up and down the keyboard?

Cricri for keeping the length of the sample in a sampler while you play low / high pitches you need a time stretching algorithm. Currently the Phase Plant plugin does not feature time-stretching mode in the sampler. In this case the grain part (small loop section) plays faster and slower depending on key pressed. While the start offset (grain sweep) is controlled with an LFO which is set to a defined static oscillation rate. So it’s just the sample playback engine which needs to have a time stretch algorithm to listen for what key you press and apply proper stretch. I dunno what the road map is for Phase Plant, but maybe a time stretch algo is in the works. ;) cheers, Matt

@@MattiasHolmgren Got it. I did look for time stretching but did not see anything in Phase Plant. That explains it. I also had a look at your sound packs. They look really interesting, but I could not find any previews on your site. Are there sound previews?

Absolutely, it goes totally in line with the sleep modern interface and the modulation is so quick to work with and easy to just drop in / drop out, make small adjustment. Everything is easy to read and understand. It's a dream to work with Phase Plant. Highly recommended synth! Glad to hear you like the video too my friend!

Hi Daniel, thanks. It's been a requested topic and I really think it sounds as good as any other granular synthesiser. The good thing is that we can get granular sounds going very quickly with Phase Plant. Modulation works like a charm and everything is so easy to "read" in this synth. Hi Swank, great, yeah I love Phase Plant. You can just stack up as many oscs / samples as you need. Do super quick audio rate modulation and cool surgical EQ cuts with slice EQ. And The interface just rocks. Not many synths get all that many points right. Thanks!

Thank you so much for another little workshop of the granular synth, Mattias! These granular textures are really just oh so beautiful for me, can't help loving them again :) Indeed, they couple so nice with delay and reverb, very atmospheric sound. What I'd also add to this (probably out of the topic of the video, but in general) are some more noise shaped and octave or two lower bottom pad. I remember something like this in Tiesto's tracks back in the days (well, it was Geert Huinink mostly :)), like "Forever Today", I think, the windy pad is the central element of it! Have you happened to hear it, Mattias? One of the masterpieces in trance music, in my opinion. Thanks again for the video, hope you're really enjoying your vacation there! And nice weather, too :) Have a beautiful days off, my friend!

Excellent tutorial. Subscribed! One question... I also use a Wacom exclusively. Do you find that PP's controls jump about when trying to edit them? Wondering if it's the wacom or something else :)

Hi, thanks! Yeah, welcome to the Wacom editing team. I can’t recall I had any issues with Phase Plant and param movement with the Wacom. No weird jumps at my place as far as I recall. Though in some DAWs (FL Studio) there’s some weird inertia / slowness sometimes in some menus. In Bitwig / Logic / Studio One it’s totally fine. I need to revisit the plugin and see how the knob feels. Thanks for joining in and subscribing n0pez!

n0pez check which Wacom driver version u are using. There was one particular version that wacked out. Maybe its a problem that has ”arisen” again. Congrats on breaking things. Hehe it keeps the support occupied. *just kidding....as if they need more work...phew!* But check wacom driver version and file a report to the app (daw) devs.

Hi. Is it possible to play the sample without a speed difference? I mean if I play a high note on my midi keyboard the sample will play much faster than if I play a low note. Does anyone have an idea of how to play the sample at the same speed with pitch? :)

That is called time stretching. And a sampler need to have a time stretching algorithm for that to work. Try Kontakt sampler or UVI Falcon if you want more elaborate sampler functions. Phase Plant focus more on synthesis and modular synthesis functionality, which is its strength. PP can do audio rate modulation on many parameters very easy which is awesome. Thanks Marcus.

Yes, for most of my sound design I usually do it in a proper synth (like Phase Plant) which work cross platform. Which means I can load it up in Logic, Studio One, Ableton, FL, Bitwig or what ever. Phase Plant is a Quick plugin to work with. Grid is cool, but it can be very time consuming and I don't recommend it for all sounds. It doesn't make sense. You can use it for specific experiments, but for song writing it eats too much time to "drag cables" so to speak. But thats IMO. Thanks for asking Luzy.

Does phase plant has warp modes just like serum?

Phase Plant does not currently offer traditional warp modes (Serum) or osc effects (Zebra). But you can do audio rate modulation to several osc parameters like phase, shift etc. Warp mode is basically manipulating the wave phase in various ways, so it’s the same thing in Phase Plant, but you have to know what kind of modulation to feed the phase. I’m sure KiloHearts will implement some presets for osc-effects / warping soon, so it’s quicker to achieve certain things that you are used to in Serum / Zebra erc. Phase Plant is a quite new synth on the market so I bet we will see plenty goodies coming soon. Thanks!

Hey Hristo, might have been the good old Keystation Mini 32, small n cute indeed perfect for tight desktop setups when u also want a wacom for editing. Nowdays I replaced it with an Arturia Keystep 37. But for more elaborate pieces (outside camera and video work) I use larger keyboards / synths like the Komplete Kontrol S61 and Novation Summit! Hey WIlliam. Probably, but this was one of my first sessions with Phase Plant and I didn't setup any macro controls or midi learn prior to making the video. Though it's easy to do with Phase Plant. Out of habit I also usually fiddle the mouse when working with software plugins...except when I use the Komplete Kontrol S61 mk2 in combo with Komplete Kontrol software where stuff is premapped and easy to access quickly. 🌞

HAS NO MIDI LEARN FUNCTION!!! NOT FULLY AUTOMATABLE!! which is a big limitation that doesnt allow us access to ANY parameter!! just.. and after tweacking to a max of 8 Macros. 8 Macros by far not enough. We need access to ALL parameters for Midi Learn and for "Automate last tweaked parameter" Would be great!!!

…playing back small parts of audio (grains) in succession or from various positions of the wavefile is the foundation of granular synthesis. 😉 Then you can apply envelopes to each grain, filter, pitch-change etc to make it more interesting and smooth. Yes, Rapid has more tools to make the granular synthesis more interesting. But this is the core of granular synthesis playback. ☀️

Are very important factors to really get something interesting out of it. Now that we are talking, there something I can't find about Phase Plant that stopped me to buy it: which effects comes with the basic version. Do you have this information?

Sure, base model of Phase Plant includes 6 plugins as far as I recall: 3band EQ, chorus, delay, gain, limiter, stereo. ☀️☕️🍿
