A lot of times, they **are**, in a literal sense. Private collectors will keep prototypes, dev builds, etc to themselves to preserve their value when they eventually sell them. It’s scummy.

the only thing I could think of is maybe worries of legal trouble? this is an unreleased build, but its a stretch to think that whoever even owns the rights to this game anymore (if anyone) would care

i hate when people gatekeep lost media like this. same shit happened with the McDonald's DS game before Nick Robinson got his hands on it, kinda ruins the whole preservation effort and it's usually to profit off of it.

@@SomeGuilStuff sure, but the whole "cease and desist" concern would make more sense if it was a Nintendo franchise, and not a collab product. given that it's been abandonware and was lost media for over a decade, and i don't think either party gives a shit, there was no real reason to withhold the game

@iwavrQwpX4uB39nilBlQ Not just that, but the excuse is a cop out. They stupidly advertise they have it, then get contacted by a bunch of lawyers. It's like that guy who had the StarCraft Gold Source Code CDROM. He wanted a bunch of upvotes for a quick dopamine fix, and the community gets nothing. You literally just upload it to a file sharing site hrough a VPN then let other people share it for you.

@@Ringtail I'm not sure there was a bunch of early builds that released together a few years ago along with early concept art and concept art for the cancelled Phanta Sea sequel it wasn't till individual builds from this leak appeared on 4chan last year that people noticed

Seeing the typing-like movement hurt me, I was forced to use these a lot in my first year of my IT college course. They literally forced us to make a video game with those twice, the worst part was that the second time it was a game engine developed in house. that was seriously the best they could come up with when it comes to input handling for a video game. I had to implement a workaround twice.

I mad a Pong clone in windows forms and I do remember I had the same problem with the up and down arrows and that I was able to fix it very easily. I don’t exactly remember the code, but something like storing the current state of the up and down arrow keys in a variable on top of the game loop and using that variable for all input calls. This way the value cannot change in between if statements and somehow it also fixed the choppy movement. I might still have the code, will post if someone is interested (and if I do find it)

I remember watching the second part of your lego island decomp, saw footage from on eof the beta versions on your video, and tried to download it. The same person who made the prealpha video had also made another video, and it was a diffrent version and they actually provided a link. It sucks people keep lost media only to themselves, only leaving a couple of minutes of footage, or even just a few screenshots.

The “text like turning” feels like how it does with the “when (key) is pressed” block from scratch, so I can assume it’s an easy to create placeholder for a movement system

I have partial source code for Lego Island which was recovered from some drives from Data Design Interactive. I'd need permission to give it to you but would that help at all with your decompile? You might already have it though. The file is called "LEGO Island - Partial Source (June 1996).zip"

I don't think you need permission to give out this old stuff the people who have it don't own the material despite claiming they do, but if you're really concerned about that and it came from DDI's drives then I'll speak on behalf of the people with those and say it's fine. If it's the Omni demo then that's definitely already public

Yeah I like watching videos dissecting Lego Island, but LI is essentially a collection of mediocre minigames. It's neat to experience and memorable due to the overall atmosphere (music, graphics, dialogue, etc.), but even as a kid growing up in the late 90s it felt limited (at least for someone who had access to multiple games on the PC and consoles.)
