A rundown of my bass pedalboard, and what each pedal does. If you're putting together a simple bass rig, this might give you some ideas what to consider.

Very nice setup! You have a lot of useful tones that don't mask the sound of your bass. So many players use effects (particularly OD/distortion) that overwhelm the sound of their bass, but your tones just add to it. Nice work!

+Lawrence Genereux Thanks! Yeah, I was choosy with the fuzz and the gain especially. I've run bass through guitar distortions before and you're right, it can just become a wall of clipping noise with no character at all.

Just wanted to stop by a year or so after first seeing this and say I hate/love you. Your recommendation of the Sansamp VT Bass DI has completely changed my tone for the better, after trying the normal sansamp and being unimpressed, THIS changed the game, and now I have a second one just in case the first craps out on me because it is ABSOLUTELY essential to my tone, damn you, and thank you very much.

Most bassists use the OC-2. The reasons why is that it's analog, which makes the octave down sound warm and pure, and that it tracks immediately, which is useful when doing a synth-esque line. The OC-3 is digital, and while it does a good emulation of the OC-2's sound its downfall (like most digital octaves) is that there is some latency between when you play the note and when it's done processing.
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio 8 жыл бұрын
Ah, that makes a lot of sense. I haven't had a problem with the tracking yet but for sure the resulting sound is anything but warm...

There is zero downtime or latency of any kind with the OC-3. The note is absolutely immediate and identical to the OC-2 in that regard. I've used the pedal regularly for years.

"I'm not a big fan of mids" That brief moment at the five minute mark with the mids up was the best tone in this entire video. Mids IS bass tone. Scooping mids is only for when you are slapping and popping the strings. For plucking and picking you want your mids up. Lemmy. Jack Bruce. Geezer Butler. Bassists who are known for a fat and warm tone all have boosted mids.
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio 5 жыл бұрын
All good points. It depends on your genre and style, and what tone you're trying to get. The Mid knob on the VT Bass DI is (I believe) tuned around 500 Hz, which is a frequency that metal and punk producers often cut in the studio, choosing to boost up near 1-2 kHz instead. That's more my genre background so that's the sound I'm going for - 'fat' and 'warm' aren't adjectives I really chase - but definitely good advice for anyone who does prize that warmer sound.
@pcp1976
@pcp1976 5 жыл бұрын
Low mids add punch, especially for finger style. Your playing came to life in that brief moment the mids were tweaked up, at least to my ear. Before that I'd thought to myself you really need a new set of strings.

@LeFeversAudio

I've mixed up my board since this video, but I basically always go Bass > into tuner > into a compressor > any effects I'm going to use > and finally the DI / preamp. Then I connect the DI straight into my interface. This VT Bass DI that I use has an XLR plug on it so I just run a mic cable from it, right into the audio interface. 👍

Budda Chakra: "This pedal provides a lot of value for the money. I get emails all the time asking for a suggestion of a pedal that is better quality than the cheapest choices, but not as expensive as the premium ones. The Chakra is one of the best answers to that question. It's also the main suggestion I'd make to anyone who has been looking for the BBE Opto Stomp that I used to recommend so much. It features not only the typical Comp and Level knobs, but also controls for input Gain and Attack time. The Gain knob is for matching the response of the comp up with the output levels of your instrument, and avoiding unwanted clipping. Comp controls the intensity of the compression, however it does this by increasing the gain into the opto stage, so really it is best to think of these two controls more "artistically" as just different ways of getting less or more compression. Comp has a stronger effect on the squishiness of the action. The Attack knob has a wide range of response, all the way from glacially slow to nearly instant. This control is also very interactive with the other settings, changing the action significantly as well as the way the comp reacts to different frequencies. The attack time is slowest at the minimum position of the knob, going faster as you turn it clockwise. Personally I think any setting below 12:00 is too slow to be useful. The compression action is a smooth optical squish, not extreme but having that classic long swell. It is capable of a wide range of response, from gentle smoothing to heavier squashing with very long sustain. Although it can compress strongly, it's not ideal as a peak limiter, so I wouldn't recommend it for someone just wanting to cleanly cap off peaks. The squashing becomes noticeable when you hit it hard. I'd recommend this pedal most to somebody who wants light smoothness and a bit more "pop" rather than a strong effect. The tone is very clean, and nearly transparent, with no loss of lows or highs. It is not as fattening as some other comps. The noise level is impressively low. The footswitch is "true bypass". The construction quality is decently good, and it runs on standard Boss-type 9V DC. The housing is the standard medium size of Barber or BBE. If you are on a budget, I recommend this pedal very highly! "www.ovnilab.com/reviews/chakra.shtml

What are you using for your actual board? Is that a DIY board or was that made by a company?? Love the layout and look of it!
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio 6 жыл бұрын
It is a DIY board, my dad made it. I believe it's a flat piece of wood, with sides added by nailing on square dowels, then painted black and covered with velcro. We bolted a power strip on to the top back in the day, when I didn't know about power supplies yet and was running each pedal off a separate wall wart. Nowadays I have a One Spot and don't really need all those plugs but it's still there.

I'm new to compression what exactly does a compressor do. Is it a must have for bass
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio 5 жыл бұрын
Definitely not a must-have, it just evens out the sound overall and keeps your volume more consistent. Compression is a little complicated but basically it's squashing down the loudest notes you play and then raising the volume overall - the end result is your loud notes are quieter and your soft notes are louder. That way all the notes you play can be heard in the mix, rather than some being too loud and some being too quiet. Most bass players I know don't use one live, but I like how it sounds, and bass tracks recorded in the studio are usually compressed.
@iremdez
@iremdez 6 жыл бұрын
hey man! i got a question about that chakra compression pedal... you're one of the only one I see using a chakra compressor for a bass... would you highly recommend it for another fellow bass play who plays progressive metal style? and also does that compression pedal sound great as well with other pedals turned on? say, delay, chorus etc?
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I leave it on all the time - I'm a big believer in compression for both guitar and bass. I'm no compressor expert, though, I just picked that one up because it was highly recommended by a guy online who studies these things, and then after reading that I saw one at my local shop for cheap. I would 100% recommend a bass compressor, regardless of which one - it really evens out the dynamics, especially if you play with your fingers.

It's actually homemade, my dad built it... If I'm remembering right it's a piece of wood with edges attached, then painted black and with a power strip bolted on. Then there's some little stuff you can do, like non-skid rubbery material on the bottom so it stays put and those little loops on the sides to lift it out of the road case. If you were to buy one like this I think it's most similar to some of the SKB boards but I can't say for sure.
