The book provides clear illustrations kzfaq.infoUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO diagrams that cover many of the essential topics. The projects at the end of the book are valuable for enhancing your skills and creating your own furniture. @@alejandrohuerta988 I'm referring to infill 2x lumber framing throughout the house. My point is that's it's not all engineered as stated. One would lose much of the benefit of engineered studs on partition walls if they're half engineered and half not, unless solid wood was heavily culled. But you knew that. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of straight framing, whether light gauge steel or engineered lumber, but from a cost standpoint it presents a tough sell to the average builder or client.

I’ve always looked at your builds and loved your mantra behind making things future proof. Unfortunately you missed this with your kitchen. Having grown up in a home that had custom cabinets for the microwave and refrigerator I would highly recommend against custom cabinets that are smaller than standard such as you indicated for your dishwasher. After our microwave died we were able to put a smaller microwave in the spot and only required completing the finish for the cabinet interior since it was not intended to be seen. As for the refrigerator we lived with and kept an inferior fridge alive probably 30 years past it’s prime since replacing it would require major remodeling to fit a modern fridge or using a upscale dorm fridge for the kitchen. I would highly recommend you reevaluate your decision to scale back the dishwasher cabinet and verify your fridge cabinet is compatible with more than one manufacturers product.

Your comments echo exactly what I was thinking while watching this video. Why you would do any openings for appliances where the opening is narrower than standard is beyond me. Talking kitchens and bathrooms really got my juices going! I have had the opportunity to "do" several nice kitchens and bathrooms. I'm a plumber, as you know, and don't have a license to design a kitchen- bathrooms the state is willing to give me my head. So, I have worked with some certified designers and seeing your mock up, island, wall cabinets and all, really gave me a smile- I don't care who designed a kitchen, Home Depot or a fancy architect/designer- do the mock up! Walk the mock up with your client or primary user. Do this as soon as the wall studs are up- changes are still RELATIVELY CHEAP. Once the cabinets are custom ordered and sized or your prebuilt ones loaded on the truck, the cost goes up big. Satisfaction with the finished product is what sells the next job was a motto I tried always to tend to. Your client today, showing off that new kitchen to friends can sell many jobs for you- I think you apply that to your entire build, Matt, but it is doubly true for kitchens and much the same for fancy bathrooms. That walk in shower that looked so good on paper may be a claustrophobic nightmare- mock it up, too! Loved this one specially, Matt. Thanks, FR

Even worse, there will NEVER be another 42" cooktop that will work in that space you've left for it. If that Miele dies and that particular model is no longer available, you're going to be replacing countertops and going down to a 36" cooktop. Probably going to lose that drawer beneath it as well.

I am in the custom cabinetry trade, on all our kitchens we do 42" spacing minimum on all our island spacing, 48" is the norm and up to 54" on bigger kitchens or kitchens with multiple islands. You can never have to much room if you have a kitchen you plan to entertain in. About the only time we do 36 as the standard is in smaller kitchens like in condos and smaller lake home cottages that just don't have the room. I couldn't agree with you more on a lot of the other topics you brought up, I wish more builders put more thought into a lot of these topics.

I love the lesson of this video. I have already realized that in computer application development, in contract and legislation drafting and in the construction of small things to help make life easier, people think they tell you what they want, but in fact, people don't know really what they want. HOWEVER, they can always tell you what is wrong with something they see or experience. Prototypes and mockups in most endeavors are worth the effort, or at least are worth thinking about to determine the cost (in time, usually) versus benefit of making the effort.

I don’t remember an actual need for people to work back-to-back, but it’d probably be too small for that. I wouldn’t want anything less than 48” myself. This Old House has some recommended dimensions for things, and they say 48”.

I just can't understand why double vanities are so popular in master baths. My wife and I are married over 40 years and still as close as when we were newlyweds. There has NEVER been a time in our marriage when either one of us would want to be in the bathroom with the other. It's just... weird. The second basin is just an unnecessary expense and extra cleaning. The only place I see it being an advantage is where you have 2 (or more) boys or girls sharing a bathroom. JMO

I agree with you completely rich. The only reason I see folks thinking they can’t do without double vanities in a master bath is because HGTV said that’s what all housewives needed15-20 years ago and it just stuck. I’d rather have the additional closet space or bigger shower etc.. I’m like you, there’s no value in an additional sink and we are still never in the bathroom together anyways even after 30 years

This bring up an interesting point I’ve been wondering about. I have a thing for all sorts of exotic vintage built in appliance type things. Those blender/mixer/food processors that are in the countertop, toasters that pop out of the backsplash, built in indoor grills. All this sort of thing, probably to some excess. My issue is that most of these will have to be purchased NOS or refurbished second hand, and until I have my hands on the thing I won’t be completely sure on the brand and model, let alone the dimensions. Based on this video, it looks like my plan needs to be to have the appliances (the vintage ones that I’m concerned about) purchased and on hand before cabinet layout phase?

I generally get horrified when people suggest custom sizes for anything. I want all my appliances to be easily replaceable; because that saves time and effort in the long run when I inevitably need to repair and/or replace/upgrade something. I also frown upon cabinets that have many moving parts; that's just asking for something to break. Sure it looks fancy, but I want low maintenance and practical. Then again, maybe I'm odd.

@Mopardude 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't see anything that wasn't standard size. If you are referring to the 42" cooktop and the 48" fridge. If your shopping low end appliances like at a box store you won't see these sizes. When you get up into the mid and higher grade appliances you get up to a 60" cooktop standard, I have seen a 72 but I think that was a custom built unit.

Finish sheen, whether floor, wall, cabinet, furniture or whatever, is actually expressed in percentage...not degrees. That percentage of light reflection is stated as a number between 1-100. There is a tool called a gloss meter (really!) that measures amount of reflected light from a known, usually included, source. The differential between the direct light and reflected light describes sheen. Practical range runs from around 15%, which is dull to around 80% ,which is gloss.

I would not base cabinet locations on non standard appliances. Appliances will all die by year 6 and you’re not going to want to get the same unreliable one to replace it. I would choose very standard size appliances whenever possible. Also I think child safety is a critical issue: to this end I highly recommend induction cooktop/range, microwave drawer, and full height refrigerator doors (no half doors to hit kids in the head), also plan a place for chemicals that is not under the sink! IKEA style trash pullout under the sink is the best though.

Why don't you settle in using the same size dimensions of the posts and beams as the studs spaced apart by 12 inches to 5 feet, and the joists using the same size dimensions of the beams in a crisscrossing pattern and use a double shell studs using the same size dimensions of the posts to which the joists using the same size dimensions of the beams in a crisscrossing pattern. The Miele gas cooktop cutout (KM 348) is 42 1/2" wide, how will that fit into a 41 3/4" base with drawers on either side? Hopefully I'm wrong and you're right. Btw, 12" overhang is enough for knee space on an island. Flush inset doors are the way to go for sure. Order white oak doors rift sawn, if possible, if you like that look. Be careful where you make up for the extra total countertop height (37 3/4"). You want the bottom of the dishwasher, or panel, to be at the same height as the bottom of the base cabinet face frames if possible. Hopefully that will all work out ok.

Matt, feel like tackling what may be the worst air envelope violator? The dried out p trap, either in a utility floor drain, a guest bath, etc. So...is there a good trap primer solution with access to the primer valve? Do you do it on all traps? Can a sprinkler timer (sprinklers going on and off) trigger the trap primers? Maybe floor drains have primers in the nearby wall with panel access, sinks all have tailpieces with drain connection connected to primer. With a minor positive pressure in the house, a simple oil filled differential manometer smile.amazon.com/dp/B009PAN3C8 between the inside and outside, maybe in front closet, should "see" an open drain, or prove air tightness continuously. The air exchanger seems like the candidate to keep a positive pressure house.

Gonna be a sick kitchen! Personally I'd stay away from all custom appliances. Especially the slightly smaller width dishwasher. Will be a major pain in 20 yrs if the company goes out of buisiness. Also I highly prefer stained and polyd cabinets. Painted cabinets just never hold up to life, kids, and dogs and wipe clean like a stained/polyd cabinet will. Then there's also all those people that refuse to use the handles and get that paint stained with hand oils and grime.

Synchronized video and audio can be done over shielded Cat 6, does not have the same length limits as HDMI and is a lot more flexible. There are even solutions for sending video over your switched IP network, if your gear is up to it. All of this though is costly. To anyone doing low voltage I would recommend two things: A. Get a rack instead of one of those in wall units. This will give you much more flexibility in terms of equipment. B. Run conduit throughout the house if possible. That way in 20 or 30 years when it becomes time to replace the cable it is not a big issue.

@@williamdavies1977 No argument there, not sure anyone would think that. They are very important for running prelays (electrical and plumbing) in slabs however and chasing walls when building with brick. Also costings when pricing builds as kitchens and bathrooms are normally the areas where a lot of money are spent. It makes the build faster and more efficient to have these things sorted before the build. Also there are Building codes regarding how close power points are to water fixtures, at least in Aus, and where gas ports are. What type of power the oven will require etc. I was a chippy before I moved into building homes, so i realise even the roof framing where the bulkhead is for the range hood is a pain in the arse for the chippy to come and move and costs more money. Just seems like the cons out way any possible pro's. You can do virtual walk throughs in the design stage to see where everything lines up if distance between island benches and wall cabinets are of concern. Anyway, just interesting to see how you yanks build. Cheers for the reply
