I always appreciate your demeanor on these calls, Matt. It is clear that you, and your entire team, understand the state of mind the folks you are out helping. Most are not having their best day, and many are not in a familiar place, which doesn't normally bring out the best in folks. People will react, both consciously and unconsciously, to the way YOU handle the situation...and I don't ever recall seeing you appear uncertain of yourself or losing your cool. I spent a career dealing with folks not having good days, and I am impressed with your professionalism and "people skills". You put the people around you at ease, and that is a talent...and a gift. You've also managed to surround yourself with a staff that have the same skill set..which they have not doubt sharpened while working with you... Having a staff like that is a blessing indeed...bringing the whole package into a team like you have is rare...very rare.

Great work all. Matt: "I haven't heard dark as part of the weather report." Jaymie: "Maybe you should watch the road." Classic. I brought it up last year; don't ever reach into a steering wheel. Broken thumb and or wrist. I started driving in 1960. It was taught by most everyone, even though power steering was coming in.

When a buggy with hydraulic rear steer is built it needs to carry a couple of appropriately sized pieces of pipe (cut down the center) that can be laid over the cylinder rods to restrict their movement in emergencies.

@@breadlowry I suppose, as Matt was doing, you have to first dump the pressure so steering can be recentered. Maybe just put a bracket on the frame, both sides, to connect the inner end of tie rods too. Although, I have no idea how these tie-rods are constructed. If rod-end style, that would work. Make brackets so it tracks straight ahead when connected.

The event ramped up, big time, when Matt got in the "recovered vehicle"; there were tense looks on his face as the machine slowing climbed (as it was pulled via the winch). I congratulate all involved, great job. One word of caution; once that winch line draws tight, all on-lookers & others should exit the scene (safely away) , & camera crew the same. It's the safe thing to do & it doesn't matter how big the crowd, separate them safely from the "action" until that winch line "calms" and is pulled in & "a recovery vehicle" is stable. It was an interesting recovery.

Good job! The moral of the rock buggy story is, When a vehicle rolls over and you flip it back onto its wheels, you should use tools to turn the engine one full turn by hand, and if you can't you should pull all the sparkplugs because one sparkplug can look dry but that doesn't mean some of the others are not swimming in oil. lol. It only takes one cylinder to be full of oil to lock the engine. And trying to start it while it's hydro-locked can damage the engine. I hope his starter is all that got damaged, but it might not be damaged either, it might just be jammed in the flywheel and will come loose once they pull all the plugs. Heck, it might have come loose during that ride out of there.

Oh nice, the buggy has a rear winch tucked away under the tail too. That's a pretty decent little rig, kinda sucks that it barely has enough room to strap a cooler onto the fuel tank because I'd drive that thing nonstop.

Great rescues Matt and crew. That’s probably the biggest crowd I’d seen on that rescue! 🤙😎

Matt, you didn't know a recovery was a spectator sport? It looks like it all did go smoothly.

"Chicken wing it". - One can relate to that with painful memory of a necessary aquired skill taught by the doorlatch-channel of a 1968 Toyota FJ45. We used to call the condition "Toyota Elbow" and from then on drive with the outboard elbow held high over the window ledge with the glass wound down. The rough rivet-end of window winder handle attachment to its shaft used to take care of the bare knee in a sideways lurch or a succession of diagonal truck corrugations on bush roads.

I bet it is a bit nerve-racking driving those trails at night. Dropping into the top of an obstacle would feel like driving into the abyss because your headlights are pointing straight ahead, so it would be pitch black below you. I remember climbing in North Wales and coming down the Glyderau. The top of the range is a flat plateau and there was a perfect cloud inversion that day level with the top of the mountain. Our route was down a very narrow ridge, and it took me a few minutes to commit myself because it felt like stepping off a cliff. It would be way worse in a vehicle because you are set back from the front wheels, and have even more limited vision. So kudos to that lady. I be she'll never forget coming off that trail.

It’s always nice when you have a cheering section at the top of the hill, especially when everything goes smoothly. Then there’s the 5 miles back to the trailer. Another successful recovery.

That's why you don't ever put your hands in the steering wheel, you just keep your hands on the outside of it. that last snap at the end would have taken your wrist. Keep it up! Stay safe!

I learned to drive on a '38 Ford truck. No power steering. I learned quickly (after my Dad reminded me) to leave my thumb out of the steering wheel. I never called it a chicken grip/wing 10:16 so thanks for both the memories and a descriptive term for keeping my thumb out of the steering wheel. Later I owned a '77 Land Crusher and it too did not have power steering; even with thumbs out of the inside of the steering wheel it put my left elbow into the door and that left a big bruise. Chicken grips will prevent a broken thumb but one can still have an unwanted rock spinning the steering wheel. Even with power steering on all 3 of my 4x4s I still drive using chicken grips as all of them have manual transmissions and I have killed the engine in the rocks and fortunately the steering wheel did not spin from the rocks pushing the tires.
