Aw, man, I was hoping to see you remove the harmonic balancer, so I could see what kind of puller, if any, you used. I have to go in there on mine and see why my oil pressure is dropping. I've eliminated almost everything except the oil pump. The rod bearings don't show much wear, so I assume the rest of the engine is probably okay. I repaired the oil pressure regulator already. It's spring had rubbed on the wall of the bore and was almost in two. Plus, the ball seat looked like it was chipped on the edge of the hole. A Dremel tool and a ball shaped rock fixed that right up. It just happened that I had bought a whole sheet of those rocks a few weeks ago for another project. 😂 I also had some similar springs in a pack of springs that I had bought from a building supply store decades ago. They were the same diameter and had the same number of turns of about the same thickness of wire. The only thing I had to do was to stretch one out and then stress relieve it to get it to proper length, being careful not to distort it, so it wouldn't rub on the bore wall like the last one. It gave me 48 PSI - just right! It has worked for a long time, but now the pressure is dropping as the temperature rises. Also, my gauge reading has been fluctuating rapidly in time with the engine firing, so I'm thinking maybe I have a damaged pump impeller lobe or something like that.

Got the head and pistons out of my 3 cyl yanmar. Gonna go back with 3 new pistons and cylinders. I saw that some say to use a cylinder hone on the new cylinders or do they come already honed? My pistons/rings weren't broken but the top of 1 looked like the crown was coming off as top ring groove was 2x wide. Ordering full rebuild kit soon. 2 cyl were pitted near bottom. Head cracked by 2 injectors so new head as well. Common issue on these I think.

@@Woodwardm88 That's exactly what I'm talking about. People said it needs 600-650 PSI to run right, but they are wrong. Testing the compression on these Yanmar diesel tractor engines after a rebuild is a waste of time. The compression is probably much higher after the rings seat. I never rechecked the compression after I broke it in.

would you say that was due to high hours or uncommon issue? cant remember if i asked about it before.

Pretty sure someone overheated it due to a radiator leak. It damaged the pistons. Then they probably tried to use starter fluid. It's common with these older tractors. They get ran HARD!

Did you rotate each piston ring about 90°? The openings should not overlap to each other.

@@MattsShop I have the same yanmar but with a three cylinder diesel engine. The coolant tank is also shot. I'll take a look at hoye parts. I replaced the clutch recently but other then that this thing runs like a champ. Nice video series 👍

@@sgtjan5241 Thanks man. You can get the coolant tank. You need to modify the coolant level wires that come out of the bottom of the old coolant tank.

One is battery fluid level (obsolete), overheat, coolant tank level, and oil pressure. Basically dummy lights. If one is on it means "check this".

Anyone know what would cause this to happen on a diesel engine? I rebuilt a Kubota engine last year and it had the same problem, except just one cylinder. My working theory is that it's related to poor air cleaner maintenance since I found the entire inside of the intake with dust in it (air cleaner looked to be original to the machine from 1986 and it was see-through). Rest of the engine was absolutely perfect except for corrosion on some of the bearing surfaces. I'm assuming that was from acidification of the oil from combustion byproducts inside the oil. They ran it a long time with the broken piston to the point that the chunks of aluminum were missing and the chunks of broken ring had tumbled around in the void enough that they were little egg-shaped beads. Having seen that carnage and all the wear to the valves/seats and the other two cylinders as well, I was blown away that the crank wasn't even out by a half a thousandth. It was absolutely perfect. Journals on the cam and the cam lobes measured exactly to factory spec too. Must have had less than 1000 hours on it.

I can't help but wonder if the broken pistons were caused by previous individuals use of ether starting fluid.
@randr10
@randr10 Жыл бұрын
Sorry, I skipped over some details. The overheating of the piston would be caused by the hot spotting of carbon in the combustion chamber. Essentially the carbon build-up gets red hot and ignites the fuel as soon as the injector goes off, which happens as the piston is coming up, so it's trying to compress the gasses as they're exploding, which creates extremely high cylinder pressures and temperatures. I think that may be the cause of my cracked piston. Weird how a simple air cleaner failure can lead to such a complex engine failure.
