It really does get you into some amazing places without walking or riding a horse for days.

I too admire this type of flying and these wildlife - rich spots. Still hope someday soon! Dreams, Hopes can be a reality, if not actual, then in the mind!

There are lots of remote strips in Idaho not nearly as tight and technical as this that one can get the same quiet and relaxing experience. Fly fishing too!

Yeah two different missions. I think you are referring to Steve Henry. The STOL thing has grown from what I like to do into something more of a spectator event. This is not to take anything away from that but my airplane gets flown anywhere it goes. I think if you are going to compete there should be a rule it has to fly there.

It is a slow process but if you have the time and the resources to be able to practice probably a few years... I have been flying since 1994 and I started doing off airport around the year 2000. This video was around 8 or 9 years later, I think this was filmed around 2009 but I had been doing this hardcore stuff for around 5 years by then.

31" tires weigh around 31 pounds each and 35"s weigh now around 44 pounds each. But the 35" tire you also have to use a heavier wheel. So yes there is a real weight penalty but what they do for you as you can see is amazing.

@@mauleguy Absolutelty! The takeoff and landing distances are phenomenal. It’s easy to see how much cushion those tires and your tail wheel provide. That’s got to be a whole lot of fun. Quick short story: back in 1977 a friend and I drove to Alaska from NJ. Back then the AlCan Highway was a pretty rough ride. One rainy, foggy afternoon we were driving north through the Yukon when we happened upon a Super Cub parked on the side of the highway. This was a first, of course. The pilot said the mountains were socked in, preventing him from getting to his destination, so he landed on the highway, pushed it to the side, and set up a tent for an overnight stay. He gave us a note with his name, N number, and flight plan details. He asked if we could drop off the info in Whitehorse and have them inform the necessary parties of his whereabouts and to cancel his flight plan. The person in Whitehorse looked at the note, shook her head, and said “I hope he knows that he’s not going to be able to fly out of there when the weather clears. They’ll have to put his plane on a truck.” My first taste of aviation in the great northwest! I still have his note.

I was in your situation, until I bought my Mini-Max Eros last year for $3,500. It costs me $15 per hour to fly. Closed cockpit, and cabin heat to boot! It is an experimental, requiring that license, but not a medical. I added an EFIS, and an ADS-B transponder. Now, I can go anywhere that any other airplane can go. I added two belly tanks, giving it an endurance of 5 hours. I have flown it over the Cascade mountains, as well as down the Olympic Peninsula. It is not the fastest, but then, that was not the point. Flying affordably, was the goal.

Altralights no medical and a lot of fun and freedom or make friends at the local airports 👍

Great question. You have to have lots of experience to build on. Don't rush it... Learn by doing and building on each experience. Find bigger places with two way approaches where you can go around if you need to. Drag a place first and run your tires down it to check and see how long and how rough it is. Lots to know so start with the easy. After you land a spot get out and walk it and see how much area you used. See how long it takes to get airborne and clear obstacles.

Well you are correct, unless your running drugs or just don't want people to see you from the air it is probably not the best idea. Mine being the latter, It also makes the airplane easy to recognize which is not what I wanted. I was not running drugs, that was my attempt at being funny so before anyone notifies the DEA I want to be clear about that.

Actually not a whole lot in capabilities, 4 place cub is a great airplane. It was not really available when I built Bushwacker from Maule parts back in 2002. ( Kirk Elias had one back then) Now you can buy a fuselage for one and everything else is just bolt on Super Cub parts.

Not sure what you mean (in terms of what you would like to see)this footage came from a 2 hour long dvd and this is just one segment. I am not sure if these are typical, I think I tried to change it up for interesting shots.

We'll, unless you consider me the dumbass that did! Not my intention however! I guess it's probably a good Guage to indicate other channels I watch have a lower level of maturity than this channel. But truly, like he said taking off thru those trees if you lost your motor it would be very bad. Heck just the act of flying over that kind of country in a single engine if that motor goes, chances of surviving are very slim.

Empty weight of that airplane was 1325 gross weight 2500 so with me in the airplane and full fuel (42 gallons) I still could put a little over 750 lbs in the airplane... I am not sure how to calculate the balls of steel so I included them in my weight of 160lbs. :))

@@mauleguy it’s a cnc crank supposed to be good for 500 horse but there may be problems with it, maybe discontinued production.

I’m wondering about C32 caterpillar cylinders and stroke on a 4 cylinder opposed aircraft engine , bet it would be a workhorse 😎
