Moraiyo khichdi, also known as sama ke khichdi, is a delicious farali (fasting-friendly) dish made from barnyard millet. It’s commonly prepared during Hindu fasting days like Ekadashi, Navratri, and Shivratri. Here’s how you can make it:
Ingredients:
1 Butter Milk 250ml
1 cup moraiyo (sama or barnyard millet, approximately 200g)
1 medium Red chili Powder
2 tbsp oil
Sweet neem leaves (optional)
½ tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp salt (use sendha namak for fasting)
1 tbsp cumin coriander powder (dhana jeeru)
3 cups water
Instructions:
Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
Mix in curry leaves.
Add the moraiyo (sama).
Pour in water and add the spices (salt, cumin coriander powder, and red chili powder).
Cover and cook for 12-15 minutes until the potatoes are tender.
Adjust the consistency to your liking (if less watery, remove the lid and cook for a few more minutes).
